This is a really good reform. As Franklin has said, it lets PSU give the true freshmen a taste of real football action (presumably early season games). The coaches find out who is ready to play, and even for those who aren't ready, there's nothing like some game action to help the practices and training make sense.

The other thing I like about it is, if there's a rash of injuries at a position, freshmen can take some reps so there's less need to play a player who is banged up.

This was discussed in another thread and I do agree with your last part but coaches are going to be very strategic about this and I think a lot of people thrilled right now are going to be pissed at coaches like Saban and Meyer sooner than later

Seems like a better idea would be to insert a freshman later in the season after they have had some time to grow. They might be better prepared by then and fill in for injured players.

The article acted like there is no longer an NCAA requirement to sit out a year. Did I understand that correctly? If that's true kids could be jumping around all over the place.

Nope, NCAA hasn't changed the rule regarding sitting out a year, but they are keeping The MIchigan Exception.
