New James Bond - the 007th Bond

Tom Hardy, per reports, not official

As much as I love Tom Hardy, and I think he'll be a fine Bond (if this ends up being true), it's a fairly expected and safe choice. He's certainly at his best when he doesn't rely on being a pretty boy (Bronson, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and I think with the right material he will kill this (think Eames in 'Inception'). But, I was really hoping for someone less predictable - mostly Idris Elba. The other contenders were too 'weak' IMO (Tom Hiddleston, Richard Madden, Robert Pattinson) or too unknown (Aiden Turner, Jack Lowden, Sam Heughan) or just too....really off brand (Riz Ahmed, Michael B. Jordan, John Boyega, Harry Styles, Henry Cavill...). I thought Craig was a really great, non-traditional James Bond and he'll be tough to follow. Maybe someone like Michael Fassbender would have been cool too. Still, really interested to see Hardy as Bond.

I caught Casino Royale again this weekend. In my mind, this is the best 007 movie.

Eva Green, stunning.

Nooooooooo!!!!!! He has to finish season 2 and 3 of Taboo before he even considers a new role. Taboo is the making of a masterpiece and must have a conclusion. Ughhhhhh.

(He will make an awesome 007 though) great actor and would love to see a sequel to Fury Road as well. I dig that he is really selective in his work at the moment.

It is probably Craig’s best, I think all of his were good I know 2 didn’t get great reviews. It is up there with the best all time.

I trust you didn’t see the flop/disaster that was Capone...not his fault but still; almost unwatchable.

Tom Hardy will be the shortest Bond at 5’9. Next shortest is Daniel Craig at 5’10. (Just some interesting trivia I haven’t seen anyone mention.)

They should have gone with The Rock.

The problem with Bond is that they just introduced Christoph Waltz, an outstanding villian. I am skeptical Hardy presents the right presence opposite someone like that.

Love the choice of Hardy. Think he's a great actor with a ton of versatility to what roles he can pull off. In my mind I am trying to imagine him portraying Bond. Being a great actor, I'm sure he'll succeed. I just think his own personal style, his physical make-up and just his overall persona, he will be a more "brutish" Bond than others. Craig brought a level of athleticism to Bond that was sorely lacking after Dalton & Brosnan. Dalton made Bond a pu$$y, and Brosnan was more of the sophisticated elite Bond along the lines of Roger Moore. After Dalton & Brosnan, it was great to have Bond become more athletic, fit, and tough with Craig. I think Hardy will be able to keep the level of athlete in the role and maybe even make Bond more of a brute.

My favorite Bond trivia is that Pierce Brosnan was the heaviest and the lightest James Bond.

The movies in general got better with Craig. Much more real, and violent, as opposed to goofy. Hardy will fit the new style.

I agree, the Dalton couple of Bond movies were just not that good. Brosnan was OK but I thought the Craig Bond movies all were really good movies and Craig played the part excellent.

Hardy is a good actor, no doubt about that. Wonder how much British accent he will put into the role as he can go all out accent to the point it is difficult to understand as an American in a few roles I have seen him in.

The Craig Bond films took 007 into a new realm of more edgy, dark, they really rebooted the franchise somewhat. I think that is what made the movies so good. They need to figure out a new story arc for Hardy and Bond in that same fashion to keep it fresh. Wouldn't even mind seeing them somehow have a story arc that goes over maybe 3 films long as a way to add something new as until now, pretty much each film was it's own movie with very little linked to other films. The way Hardy has played the bad guy in a few films, maybe Bond ends up going over to the 'dark side' for a film and then redeems himself in film 3.

Really looking forward to No Time To Die! My wife bought me a Sea Master (unfortunately, not the 007 version) for my birthday, and hoping after seeing NTTD she'll spring for an Aston Martin and forego the Corvette for my 50th... lmao

2 thoughts to piggy-back off you Cletus:

1. Although I liked Craig's version of Bond overall, at times his self-loathing, self-inflection, almost self-pitying got a bit much. Like you said, Craig brought a "dark" side of Bond that really was not done before. It was almost like he did not like himself. It will be interesting to see the Bond character arc as it transitions from Craig to Hardy. From Dalton & Brosnan, Craig changed the character almost a complete 180. Personally, I'd like to see Hardy keep the edginess, toughness, and physical-ness that Craig brought to the role. But do away with the self-loathing dark side. Have more "fun" with the character ala Sean Connery. For his day (1960's), Connery brought a level of physicality and toughness to the Bond character. But he also had "fun" being 007. He loved the womanizing, the drinking, the traveling ... and he never felt guilty or remorseful about killing a villain.

2. I thought I heard a while back that the Bond Franchise was going to try and loosely remake some of the old films/story-lines but with the new characters. I'd love to see this done. For example, a villain trying to steal the Gold from Fort Knox (Goldfinger redo). Or a villain who hi-jacks a space satellite that can cause devastation around the globe (Moonraker).

3. I'd also like to see the franchise resurrect a repeating henchman along the line of "Jaws". That was just a fun character line. Dave Bautista (famous for his role as Drax The Destroyer in the Guardians movies) played a henchman in one of the recent Bond films. Maybe give his character a name and a repeating appearance ??

Have you seen Hardy in 'Locke'? It's essentially a one man movie; Hardy plays a Welsh construction foreman who spends the entire movie in a car, on the phone, talking to a) his family wondering where he is, b) a young colleague who is concerned over having to supervise the following day's concrete pour, and c) the woman giving birth to his child in the hospital (whom he is driving to see). It's fascinating; the accent is pretty nutty but it's really all about Hardy having the charisma and gravitas to hold a movie like that together. Bond as a 'loose cannon' would be Hardy's wheelhouse; playing him straight wouldn't work as well I think. But, Hardy has the chops I to give Bond a
depth I don't think has been present before. Will be interesting to see how much room the filmmakers give him. I was also going to mention Hardy being relatively short for Bond, but I was thinking Craig was much taller than 5'10" - certainly played Bond much bigger than that.

I was with you until point #2. Please for the love of God no more remakes, reboots or re-imagining.

Interesting. Like Midnighter, I was kind of hoping for Elba, but I love Hardy as well. I could watch an entire spinoff of him playing Alfie from Peaky Blinders.

I like Idris Elba a lot and think he's an excellent actor but after the fiasco with The Dark Tower he probably wanted nothing to do with the Bond role. ;) Which, BTW, none of the problems with The Dark Tower were because of Elba. I liked him as Roland.

Hardy is a good pick but I really wish they would finish up Taboo. I liked it.
I also think Hiddleston would have been a good choice as well, I really didn't like the other candidates.

I think there are plans to finish Taboo - supposed to be a three season effort. I suspect once filming gets back to pre-covid timelines Hardy will make it a priority - especially since his Dad is part creator.

I didn’t catch Dark Tower after seeing reviews. And I think I only ever made it through 3-4 of the books in the series, and that was 15 years ago. It just struck as me as a bit too much of King trying to make something lengthy for the sake of length rather than the story requiring it.

I liked the series but wasn't crazy about the ending or the final book.
I thought the first 4 books were excellent with Wizards and Glass being my favorite of the set.

I'm not a huge Bond fan by any stretch (I thought Skyfall was boring and contrived AF), but I love Casino Royale - I think it's the 'low stakes' element of the plot (essentially a card game) that allows the characters to breathe a bit. And Vesper is maybe the ultimate femme fatale (French, voluptuous, double agent). I never saw Spectre but will give it a look before the new one hits.

Personally, I thought Jeremy Renner would have been a good choice, but definitely too safe and sort of a poor-man's Daniel Craig.

Hope all you guys are well. I haven't been here in a while and thought I'd see what's up with Micah now that we'll have a season. Then I read some of the posts and .... ugh. Luckily, this thread gave me a chance to say hey.

The Ignore feature got a workout recently and it’s much better for me. It’s not perfect but better than nothing. Hope you are well too!

Way to one-up me. Brilliant.

I loved Craig in the role, and liked the scripts, but did not like how the action scenes were filmed.

Like so many action movies these days, producers try to simulate action by rapid fire switching of very short clips. I think it is an awful technique, but I guess most people like it or they would not do it.

If your partner has any cleavage at all, and you have occasions where she will wear an outfit displaying that cleavage, I highly recommend gifting her a necklace similar to the one in this picture.
You will thank me later!

Taboo screamed to me of a story line that they would not know how to wrap up and thus would have a crappy ending. IE - Game Of Thrones, LOST .... They are fun shows to watch. But many story lines. Many different story lines. And then it comes time to put a nice neat wrapping on the package and they do not know how to wrap it up. So the ending is usually pretty lame. In the end, as a viewer you say to yourself "I wasted X years of my life on that ending".
