New 2013 arrest has surfaced for Zach Smith

Sources on various Ohio State sites are saying that AD Gene Smith is actually on administrative leave, not vacation. Teddy Greenstein reported yesterday in an article that Smith would be canned.

Is Smith a scapegoat?

most likely it wont be Urbs, lets face it , the AD is on the wrong side of the balance sheet.
If Smith is gone and Meyer is retained, it is the most clear and unequivocal statement that Ohio St could make that football is more important than all else, more important than abuse, than student athlete well being and safety, than really anything.

Meyer had considerable baggage (personally disrespecting his own wife and daughters with affairs with coeds, rampant legal issues and lack of discipline of his players, etc), rehired baggage (Zach Smith was already known to Meyer to have spouse abuse issues, but was rehired, promoted, and retained after significant issues in 2015 between the DUI and multiple police reports from stalking among his other spouse issues), and created new baggage (lying publically about what and when he knew, what he would have done if he knew, non-apologizing when facts disproved his lies, etc).

But football right?

Although looking at the big picture, Meyer is already such damaged goods that retaining him makes little sense beyond this season's results. Public perception is that he is a liar and an abuse enabler. Since Kevin Wilson (OC) and Greg Schiano (DC) both have too much baggage with scandals and abuse of players between them, adding a permanently damaged and untrustworthy Meyer is just the kiss of death. Who would want to play for that abusive, scandal-ridden, lying trifecta? All 3 of them have burned people time and time again and turned a blind eye to abuse. Only the most uninformed would even consider them at this point.

I think you're in for a rude awakening if you believe this to be true. Urban can get kids to the next level--that's the top priority for many (arguably most) top recruits

How could they trust anything he tells them? They've watched him lie through his teeth repeatedly.

They see he's covered for a wife abuser for a decade at multiple institutions. They see he rehired the wife abuser, promoted him, and covered for him for several years since the 2015 incidents that Ohio St fired him for in 2018.

They see he's hired a DC that Tennessee very publically rejected for his tainted past.

They see he's hired an OC who was fired by Indiana for abusing his own players including making them play through significant injuries that could jeopardize their careers.

They see that Meyer lied to and cheated on his own wife with girls the same ages as his daughters.

They see Meyer lost all control eventually at Florida, had a mental breakdown, and that it is starting to happen all over again at Ohio St.

They see Ohio St was good with allowing their student athletes to be sexually molested by a team doctor that they protected for decades with over 100 former athletes claiming to have been abused.

They see Ohio St trying to get out of any responsibility for a coach sexually assaulting diving team members.

At what point do people look at Ohio St's 3 concurrent assault scandals in 3 different sports and then look at Meyer's record as a horrible, untrustworthy, human being and his two abuse scandal ridden coordinators and say this is not one or two data points? This is how they do business. They don't give a @#$^ about their own student athletes. They are fine with putting men in positions of power that abuse their own student athletes.

Why would any sane and informed recruit place draft pick history over having no trust in their coaches or their school to do the right thing by them or even to tell them the simple truth?

I agree with everything you said. But all these kids see is UM getting them to the next level. And of course nothing bad will ever happen them because their bulletproof and immortal.

Per the report, Zach Smith's license was also suspended for 180 days.

That would --- seemingly --- make it tough for Zach Smith to roll up to the car rental desk at DFW and get a car.

That would also --- seemingly --- make it tough for Urban to play the "plausible deniability card" here.

If Urban didn't know about the DUI, Urban would theoretically still be sending Zach Smith out on a recruiting trips by himself. But if Zach Smith was being sent to DFW (Texas was his "recruiting area"), Zach would have a hard time renting a car. He'd basically have to tell Urban about his suspended license. One would think, right?
maybe he had recruits blow into his breathalyzer installed in his car?
