The Senate kicked off its potential marathon of amendment votes on the Democrats’ climate, tax and health package late Saturday, setting the stage for what is likely to be hours — or even days — of votes on predominantly Republican amendments.

The so-called vote-a-rama follows Senate adoption of a motion to proceed to the bill just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday, with Vice President Kamala Harris breaking the 50-50 tie. All 50 senators who caucus with the Democrats supported the motion to move forward on the $300 billion package.

Under the rules, senators had up to 20 hours to debate the bill, but used only four hours of that time. The limits to the vote-a-rama are primarily lawmakers’ stamina and their desire to head home for the August recess after a final vote on passage.

The Senate is set to consider scores of Republican amendments and several proposed by Vermont independent Bernie Sanders, who caucuses with Democrats. Eager to shorten the voting time, Democrats are offering few amendments other than Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer’s substitute amendment.......

Five years ago, white supremacists descended upon Charlottesville to oppose that city’s attempt to remove Confederate statues. But anyone who witnessed the torch-carrying marchers chanting “Jews will not replace us!” had to realize that the so-called Unite the Right march was about more than monuments.

Today, the political right is united in its extremism, barely distinguishable from hate groups. “The Great Replacement” — a conspiracy theory that nonwhite people are being brought to America to “replace” and disempower white people — has become the common fodder of Tucker Carlson, the most popular cable news show host in the nation.

Events in Charlottesville on Aug. 11-12, 2017 — culminating with a neo-Nazi plowing his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing Heather Heyer — should have been a “never again” moment.

But when then-President Donald Trump surveyed that wreckage and saw “very fine people, on both sides,” white supremacists in America knew they had a friend in the White House. Trump later sealed this deal with a shoutout to the Proud Boys — “stand back and stand by.” Following an attempted coup to keep Trump in office on Jan. 6, 2021, he described the insurrectionists as “great people.”.......

Dummies Covering CPAC

I don’t have the energy to do a full write up of the significance of Marcy Wheeler’s The Accidental Exposure of DOJ’s Misdemeanor Plea Deals, and I don’t feel as if it needs me anyway. It’s clearly written. There are some inside references that need annotation for people who haven’t been following along, but, generally, I think folks can click her links and get it.

BUT, I was going crazy Friday watching the CNN and MSNBC hosts scratch their chins or scalps over the “crying prisoner” at CPAC. Here is a representative story from Newsweek of a puzzled writer.

If you haven’t heard about the “disco booth,” it’s basically like this: conserva-bots paid to go to this exhibit. They put on big headphones and went to the “disco booth,” where they heard voices of people describing, with sound effects, the horror of their arrests for January 6th offenses.

Genuinely, being seized by the FBI is going to be horrifying. It’s NOT SUPPOSED TO BE AN INVITATION. So, with screaming wives (generally) and children, and protests (recreated/dubbed), it’s a Hell House presentation. Then they go to a man in an orange jump suit in a little fake prison cell who sits on the cot and cries.

The TV people identified him as
Brandon Straka and say that he was part of Walk Away. Otherwise, it’s ha-ha.

First, he was fund raising for his Walk Away group.

Second, he was trying to recover his far right credentials. That’s why Major Taylor-Greene was praying over him. Straka got a misdemeanor charge and no jail time because he cooperated with the FBI and gave a LOT of information. How much? He dropped the time on the founder of America’s Front Line Doctors. He identified another rioter.

How do we know this? Someone at Justice screwed up and, compelled to tell the press about one element of his cooperation deal,
sent the press the full FBI notes for every single session.

Oops.

Now, from Empty Wheel:

Straka, as I’ve covered in the past, was a key player in the Stop the Steal movement, most famously in his role riling up the crowd outside the Wayne County vote count in Michigan. He was a speaker at one the January 5 events, got stripped of his January 6 speaking spot as Katrina Pierson tried to cut out the crazies, and then watched Trump’s speech from his VIP seat right next to Mike Flynn. Straka stopped off at the Willard Hotel on his way to what he claims to have believed was another speaking slot on the East side of the Capitol, where he joined in the mob. He was originally charged with civil disorder for his role in encouraging others to steal a shield.

And no one on television knew the name! Some even said that it was “an actor” playing a January 6th defendant.

Furthermore
, Straka’s life has been threatened. . . a lot. . . for cooperating. Why was he crying? He was repenting of cooperating with the government and seeking forgiveness of the Trump-aligned mob. The “disco booth” was to convince them of how terrifying the Jackbooted Thugs are, how evil the Tyrant Biden is.

This is not funny. It’s not a joke.
It shows us that the element of political violence is still present at CPAC, out in the open, and still garnering propaganda.

Never stop watching, because these asses have never yet told a funny joke.

.......A recent study by the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights, a nonpartisan nonprofit, documents how deeply right-wing extremism has infiltrated U.S. statehouses. Of the 7,383 people who served in state legislatures in the 2021-22 session, eight hundred and seventy-five had joined far-right Facebook groups. (All but three were Republicans.) The study describes the fringe beliefs that many of these members shared, including “the idea that Christians constitute a core of the American citizenry and/or that government and public policies should be reshaped to reflect that.” A group promoting this view, the Ohio Christian Alliance, counts eleven Ohio state legislators among its Facebook members, including Gary Click. Last year, the organization helped block a bill, the Ohio Fairness Act, that would have barred housing and employment discrimination against the L.G.B.T.Q. community........

.....Director-General Rafael Grossi’s comments on August 6 came as Kyiv and Moscow traded blame for the shelling of the Zaporizhzhya site, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.

"I'm extremely concerned by the shelling yesterday at Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which underlines the very real risk of a nuclear disaster that could threaten public health and the environment in Ukraine and beyond," Grossi said in a statement......

Ukraine accused Russian forces on Sunday of firing rockets that landed on the grounds of a nuclear power plant that Russia has seized in the south of the country, further raising the risk of an accident at a complex where the United Nations’ nuclear agency has said that the principles of nuclear safety have been violated. A pro-Russian regional official blamed Ukrainian forces for the attack.

The rockets fired Saturday evening landed near a dry spent fuel storage facility, where 174 casks are stored, each containing 24 assemblies of spent nuclear fuel, according to Enerhoatom, Ukraine’s nuclear energy company. One person was wounded by shrapnel and many windows were damaged......
