Never in the history of analysis of Penn State has someone nailed it like Matt does here. Go to the 25:30 mark of the clip below.

What is the best Big Ten contender to make the CFP?

"I'm all in on Penn State, man. All in. And it's not just that they have the two best players in the Big Ten. It's so much more than that. I think the receivers are terrific. Their offensive line is terrific. I think they're way better on defense than people thought they would be. And to me, they've got that chip [on their shoulder] now. And it's not just for being ignored for last year's college football playoffs. It's so much more than that.

I was at Big Ten media days. And Penn State was literally like a second class citizen. When James Franklin came in for his break out interview, it was like behind the Big Ten set. And the Big Ten crew was so loud, it was hard to hear James. At one point James look up and was like "Really? Really?? And then he said to himself, "Just focus on the task, focus on the task". And I really think, I really think, that idea that "It's just Penn State, it was a fluke"....they're playing off of that. And they're a very good team. And to me, that's a team that's going to use that chip the entire season and they're going to play really well. And I wouldn't be shocked to see them in the college football playoffs."

So, with Penn State, do you think their program is going to be on a level with Ohio State and Michigan? They've had this year now, can Franklin keep it rolling? Not just be a fluke, even beyond this year, can he keep the recruiting going, are they going to be a powerhouse just like Ohio State and Michigan look to be for years to come now?

"You know what Alex, that question right there is what fuels Penn State. That fuels James Franklin and Penn State. The question do you think they could be on the same level. THEY ARE ON THE SAME LEVEL. And they know they're on the same level. The big advance for them right now is guys like us who say "When can they get to that level", because that just motivates them. And that keeps them on the "Akron, Akron, Akron, Akron" ideal. It keeps them right where James wants them. James is a terrific recruiter. James is as good of a recruiter as you're going to get in college football. So he's going to get dudes there. They'll have players. The idea then becomes, when you have the players, can you develop them and can you keep them focused week after week after week, because that's the deal when you've got 18, 19,20 year old kids. But to me, that question that you asked and us talking about it, that's exactly what they want. Where you say, "They're not there with Ohio State and Michigan."

Best thing I have read in awhile. Totally calls out the bull sh*t treatment by the Big Ten and media folks. Freely admits that this conference is tilted towards the big 2. Agrees with us that Penn State shouldn't take a back seat to anyone and he knows that is what James is telling them. Brillant.

Seriously, why is Michigan part of this conversation? What has Michigan accomplished that puts them on the same level as OSU, Penn State, and even Wisconsin? That is what rankles me most about BIG provincialism.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I just don't get the fascination with them, or their 3rd place finishing coach.

Yep. We've won 3 B1G titles since their last one, 2 with a coach that everyone says was way too old to do anything and one last year coming out of some of the worst sanctions in NCAA history. Yeah, we really need to work hard to get to Michigan's level. What a joke.

And Judge, please allow me to say this...apparently you have quit your job and neglected your family for the past year to be able to constantly scour the web and find tons of great PSU info so that schmucks like me don't have to go searching and can find it easily in one place. To that, I say thank you!

This is sooooooo true and exactly what I was thinking when I read the story. scum has accomplished nothing and hasn't won the BIG in soooooooo many years I've lost count.

This week is going to be a good litmus test for the team and what we can expect the rest of the season.

I can't wait to see how 2017 plays out. For the first time in my adult life I feel like we have a legitimate shot to man up against anyone we play.

You are too young to be an Oracle. We have minimum age restrictions.

I've learned from the best. Yourself, Kasandro, and even the likes of BODE.

I'm younger than 40 and 1994 wasn't in my adult life. So yes, this is the first time in my adult life that I feel a Penn State team can stand with anyone they play.

Wow, you've got us all fooled with your "damning with faint praise" of PSU clown-boy. I especially love your BS about being "younger than 40" wasn't in your "adult life"....blah, blah, blah. Wow, it's so normal to run around parsing your life at the age of 18 for the purpose of rating how good a football team was "during your adult life" whatever the F that means, because any twit like PennsyOrafice that comes on the McAndrew Board posing as a PSU fan to spew his bull$hit clearly isn't much of an "adult" regardless of his age. Over the 22 year span that PennsyOrafice references, PSU finished in the Top 10 6 times, was the highest ranked team in the B1G 3 times, but they weren't one of the best teams in the country according to Mr. self-proclaimed huge PSU fan, that never has anything good or positive to say about PSU??? BTW, according to this POS troll, winning football games equates to being a "man" with his bull$hit about PSU "manning up", which he then subsequently erased.....go figure. What a sad little tool, but we already knew that long before his latest stupid post, didn't we?

This guy is DEAD ON RIGHT!!!! I've never ever ever ever felt that Penn State takes a backseat to OSU or Mich. Never! Not even in the down years or the sanction years.

You guys want to really know why PSU bounced back so quickly from sanctions outrageously designed to destroy the program? I'll tell you. BECAUSE WE WERE NEVER BENEATH OSU OR MICH. IN TERMS OF THE PROGRAMS BONA FIDES!! NEVER!!

I've fought here for years saying that and often was met with derision by some of the more myopic Den denizens. But what Matt Hayes says is the truth and it will continue to be the truth. And even if we lose a few, it will still be the truth.

Oh, it is. I was trying to be clever. I'm sorry if I missed. I greatly appreciate your efforts to link so much PSU football information in this one site. I'd miss 90% of the stuff you link if I had to go find it myself.

Head to Head record is the only thing that matters against OSU and Michigan.

That was hilarious when Michigan was actually part of the conversation to make the final 4 last year. It's like Notre Dame. If they have 2 loses, just automatically in consideration for the final 4.

Okay, cut the bullsh*t and tell us how you really feel. ;)

Michigan is 1-11 against Ohio State over the last 12 years, so how is there an Ohio State and Michigan level. We were 4-8 over the same time period which includes the sanction years. We are 4-6 against Michigan over the same time which also included two Mich victories during our sanction years.

@PennsylvaniaPride would obviously trade our Big Ten Championship last season for a win over Michigan. I mean, really?

The guy sees clearly the objective parts of the equation, and senses perfectly the more nuanced /subjective areas that have permeated this team for the last several years. He sees through, and shatters the the mainstream/ fake news narrative . Very good interview

Absolutely. I think everyone would. That's why you see so many "We beat Ohio State 2016" t-shirts around, and so few "BIG Championship 2016" t-shirts. Head to head games are all that matter.
