Know Your Penn State Wrestlers (KYPSW) 2017-18

One correction from the Ohio State dual, where the scoring was right, but my comments were not. In addition to psuflyfisher and SnydleyWhiplash, a THIRD player chose Cassar over Moore, and difft from the 247 board absolutely deserves special mention for that, even if it doesn't move his score closer to his son's.

On to Iowa...unlike a couple of Ohio State guys recently, funkisfun continues to handle the pressure of being number one, once again leading the way for Ohio State, along with RoarLions1. Both of them come out on top of this dual with 24.

One dishonorable mention this week goes to jimbokropf, who was the lone guy to pick against Joseph. Tsk, tsk, tsk. :)

There was at least one guy who must have thought he was down by 4 with 20 seconds left, and thought he just had to go for the big throw. Unfortunately for him, it was more like Snyder trying to throw Nevills, and got pancaked.

I'll do the last season-to-date update tonight. With only one dual left, which is unbelievable to me, two things are about to happen. We're about to crown the dual season champion, and we're about to enter the post-season, where the points are significant and the ranks will change.

looks like my iowa picks were missed (post 529). they weren't good, but it was something.

Sorry about that. Yours were above the notes, where I didn't even look.

So, you get 19 for the dual, which gives you 317 for the season, tied with a few others in 10th place. Your totals will be reflected after the upcoming dual.

thanks for updating! you do a great job with this.

I hadn’t looked until today... but I’m not seeing my results for Iowa (Post 537). Sorry I didn’t check earlier.
Gray, I have you at 19 for Iowa. Is that what you're getting?

Also, the reason I didn't see your scores is because you didn't put IOWA at the top of your post. Therefore, when I do a "Find in page" for "Iowa," nothing is highlighted in your post, and it's easy for me to overlook. Please keep that in mind if you play next season.

Okay, so I guess I've made one guy wait long enough. Time to post yesterday's and the final dual meet KYPSW results.

Yesterday sucked, plain and simple. Buffalo threw out a forfeit, plus some guys that we had no idea about, which resulted in 12 automatic points at 125, 141, 174 and 285. Bad, I tell ya. And, that's not even counting the wrinkle that throws me when scoring.

Anyway, for the Buffalo dual, two guys were within sniffing distance of perfection. Interestingly, each of them missed different match results. Jimbokropf got the MD for Joseph, but missed the Pipher fall (both very common misses yesterday), and ZepGraffiti hit the Pipher fall, but missed the Joseph MD. I believe Jimbo was the only guy to get the Joseph MD and Zep was one of two to get the Pipher fall.

After those two guys were a plethora of 28s, a gaggle of 27s, a handful of 26s, a few 25s and one other guy after that.

The podium results for the dual meet portion will be out in a little while.

Drum roll, please! Here are your 2017 KYPSW Dual Meet Season results.

It was a grueling, hard-fought season, and while everyone put up a valiant effort, this is no place for participation trophies. Only eight participants can claim to be KYPSW All-Americans in the dual meet portion of the contest.

In 8th, the devious, conniving Snydelywhiplash.
In 7th, Scout/247 board participant, Lazlo.
In a tie for 5th, Acacia71 and Roarlions. I know the final tiebreaker is supposed to be board posts. However, I don't know if Acacia posts as someone else on BWI, so I'm just leaving the tie in place. It can be settled in a pre-match, parking lot dual, or duel, whichever those guys choose. I'm not involved, the survivor can just let me know the outcome, so I can amend the record..
In 4th place, Lionmd, whose username I still haven't figured out whether he's a lion doctor, a fan in Maryland or a lion living in Maryland. That would be important to know, if I ever meet him.
In 3rd place, HockeyGod11, who, yesterday at the match tried to bribe me. Well, bribe isn't the right term. He didn't actually offer me anything in return, he just asked me for a few extra points. That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works. And, to be clear, he really was just joking.
In 2nd place, PSUflyfisher.
And, in 1st place, holding onto that spot for quite some time this season, funkisfun12!!! <crowd roars> Congratulations, funk, you are the KYPSW dual season champion!

Next up is the B1G, which is both a standalone competition and part of the overall season championship. I'll offer a word about what to expect in another message.

The official rules for KYPSW B1G won't come out until the allocations are announced. However, I thought I'd give a quick idea of how it goes, so you can be thinking about it.

For all ten PSU wrestlers, you will pick their place and their total bonus points. You will consider "DNP" as one place out of the number of auto-qualifiers.

Here's how the points work:
Placement Points
30 points for predicting a wrestler's place finish exactly (includes the “DNP” category)
25 points for a prediction being off by 1 place
20 points for a prediction being off by 2 places
15 points for a prediction being off by 3 places
10 points for a prediction being off by 4 places
0 points for a prediction being off by 5 or more places
Note: A "DNP" finish is considered 1 place away from 8th at all weights but those where there are 9 AQ’s, and one place away from 10th at 133 and 174.

Bonus Points
4 points awarded for predicting a wrestler's bonus point total exactly (to the nearest half-point)
3 points awarded for a prediction that is off by 0.5 points
2 points awarded for a prediction that is off by 1.0 points
1 points awarded for a prediction that is off by 1.5 points
0 points awarded for a prediction that is off by 2.0 or more points
Note: Major Decision = 1.0 bonus points; Tech Fall = 1.5 bonus points; Fall, Medical Forfeit, Injury Default, and Disqualification = 2.0 bonus points.

So, there are 340 points available for B1Gs, which means there can be huge changes in the standings. Once we know the AQ allocations, I'll post the complete set of rules.

Now that allocations are out, the following has been updated for the current year. Good luck.

Description

The B1G Championships functions as a qualifier tournament for Nationals. The B1G will automatically qualify a certain number of wrestlers per weight class, based on their placing at the B1G Championships. The auto-qualifiers (AQs) will number as follows: 10 @ 125 and 165, 9 @ 149, 8 @ 141, 157 and 184, 7 @ 133, 174 and 285 and 6@ 197. In addition, there is a need to determine an extra place finish beyond the AQ at each weight to identify the wrestler that falls one place short of being an AQ, per one of the criteria needed to attain “Bronze Standard” for eligibility to obtain an “at-large” berth to Nationals. Long-story-short, all weight classes but the five 9 AQ weights will have traditional placements out to eighth place. Those five weights will have placement all the way out to 10th.

What You Need To Do
For each of the 10 PSU wrestlers competing at the B1G Championships, predict his:
(1) Place Finish, per the placing categories listed below for each weight class; and
(2) Total Number of Bonus Points (to the nearest half-point) scored during the tournament EXCLUDING matches wrestled to determine 9th place through 14th place.

All predictions must be posted in this thread by 11:00 AM Eastern on Saturday, March 3rd.

Placing Categories, By Weight Class

125: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, or “DNP”

133: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, or “DNP”

141: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, or “DNP”

149: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, or “DNP”

157: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, or “DNP”

165: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, or “DNP”

174: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th or “DNP”

184: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, or “DNP”

197: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, or “DNP”

285: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, or “DNP”

Scoring

For each PSU wrestler, you will be awarded “Placement Points” based on your prediction for where the wrestler places in the tournament. You will also be awarded “Bonus Points” based on your predicted number of bonus points scored by the wrestler (excluding extra matches wrestled for 9th-14th place). The scoring structure for Placement Points and Bonus Points are listed below.

The maximum attainable score under this system is 340 points. Tiebreaker criteria are (1) most placement points, (2) most “30-point” placement predictions, (3) most “25-point” placement predictions, (4) most “20-point” placement predictions, (5) most “15-point” placement predictions, (6) most “10 point” placement predictions, and (7) most FOS posts.

Example Predictions/Outcomes/Scoring

Example 1. I predict Keener to finish 5th and score 1.5 bonus points. Keener actually places 1st and scores 2.0 bonus points. I receive 10 Placement Points (1st – 5th = -4 = 10 pts) and 3 Bonus Points (2.0 – 1.5 = 0.5 = 3 pts) for a total of 13 points for my 133-lb weight class prediction.

Example 2. I predict Kuhn to finish 9th and score 2.0 bonus points. Kuhn actually places 4th and scores 4.0 bonus points. I receive 0 Placement Points (4th – 9th = -5 = 0 pts) and 0 Bonus Points (4.0 – 2.0 = 2.0 = 0 pts) for a total of 0 points for my 133-lb weight class prediction.

Example 3. I predict Joseph to finish “DNP” and score 0.0 bonus points. Joseph actually finishes 10th and scores 1.0 bonus points. I receive 20 Placement Points (10th – DNP = 2 = 20 pts) and 2 Bonus Points (1.0 – 0.0 = 1.0 = 2 pts) for a total of 22 points for my 165-lb weight class prediction.

Example 4. I predict Nickal to place 1st and score 4 bonus points. Nickal actually wins, and scores 4 bonus points. I receive 30 Placement Points (1st -1 = 0 = 30 pts) and 2 Bonus Point (4.0-4.0 = 0 = 4 pt) for a total of 34 points for my 184-lb weight class prediction.

I will post a link to B1G pre-seeds when they are announced and actual seeds and brackets when they become available.

Again, all predictions must be posted in this thread by 11:00 AM Eastern on Saturday, March 3th.

Although these scores will be compiled with the Dual Season and Nationals scores to crown an overall season champion, all are welcome to join this particular event to be crowned B1G champion. Good luck!

How about a hundred-yard dash? Still pretty quick at my age, and BOTH of us can survive :).

Quick question....How many matches will someone who took 1st wrestle. How about a 3rd place winner

4 to win the championship and either 5 or 6 for 3rd or 4th. Only way you wrestle 6 is if you lose your pigtail, and wrestle all the way back. Or, if you wrestle in the mini-tournament for one of the AQ spots after 8th. However, per the rules, those matches won't count for bonus points.

I'll add this information;

At Big Ten's, a champ wrestles either 3 or 4 bouts, depending on whether they have a 1st Round bye. There are no pigtails, as it's considered a 16-man bracket.

A 3rd Place finisher could wrestle as few as 4 bouts (of which one will be a loss), if he has a 1st Round bye, and follows the typical path of losing in semi's before dropping down. Most likely is 5 bouts, of which one is a loss, and less typical is the guy that runs the table, all in wrestle-backs -- he gets 6, of which one is a loss.
