Keith Olbermann returning to SportsCenter?

It's just my opinion, but I don't believe her use of ape was coincidental.
I guess I'm at a loss as to how someone - Roseanne, Felli, anyone - is an automatic RACIST for comparing someone's looks to an ape. Greg Schiano? George W Bush? Patrick Ewing? If someone thinks someone else looks like an ape or a monkey, I don't get the built-in, assumed racist thing. Aren't we all descendants of apes in the eyes of non-creationists anyway? I'm all for calling them stupid and uncouth. All day long. Racist? You've all made it so no one even understands the meaning of the word anymore.

I said AUTOMATIC. In bold print. Of course racists have made those comparisons over the years. Others have as well that are not racists (whatever your definition of the word is today).

What makes it automatic is that EVERYONE understands the connotations associated with saying a black person looks like an ape. Given that everyone knows that and all the history that goes along with it, only a racist would possibly use it.

Everyone EXCEPT Mt. Nittany.

I guess this starts and stops with how you define a racist, and what the penalties should be. Archie Bunker and George Jefferson did a better job of that than the media is doing right now.

Cant give the perfect, fits all definition, but comparing people of color to apes is well over the line. Ancient, Klan-level racism.

Pretty shameful thing to say, but it is different in that they were of somewhat the same race. Still shameful, but in a different way.

What Ali did to frazier was a disgrace. Not only called him gorilla but an Uncle Tom. When in fact it was Frazier who grew up the poor son of a share cropper in South Carolina, while Ali had basically a middle class upbringing. All this after Frazier campaigned for him to get his boxing license reinstated and gave him cash when he couldn’t fight.

Ali did try to apologize after one of their fights (through Marvis) but joe wouldn’t accept

Roseanne got what she deserved

But i have to disagree with those who say that sexism and bigotry are vastly different from racism.

And calling someone a nazi is, IMO equally as terrible as making racist comments. To equate someone to the most evil group of people in modern civilization is abhorrent to me.

Personally I couldn’t care less if someone where to call me a dago guinea wop greaseball goomba.... but I’d be insulted if you called me a Nazi.

One is uncontrollable thru birth. The other is a choice, and to make that unjustified claim is awful

It's not comparable. Racism has caused immeasurable historic suffering. Calling someone a nazi has not, to my knowledge, done anything similar.

Was Don Rickles a racist?

Let me be clear here that I am not really taking a side. I find this all really interesting. I am just interested in how people classify things.

If you need any more proof of just how deep and irreconcilable the differences in this country are, just follow any of these situations where somebody on one side has done or said something truly vile. Instead of condemning the indefensible, partisans look for somebody on the other side to single out as being "just as bad", while defending or minimizing the actions of "their people".

If the behavior is indefensible, it's indefensible-and everyone should be able to see that. We can't even agree on facts anymore, so rational debate is impossible.

Maybe it's time to shut it down and give ourselves back to England- if they'll have us.

For me, Don Rickles is the guy from Casino. I know he was huge, but I don't know enough about him to say anything worthwhile.

I am not sure your point. You are saying racism caused immeasurable harm but not nazism? so, somehow, it is better to call someone a nazi than an ape?

I condemn the indefensible, but don't defend or minimize the actions of "my people." If I say it's BS that Roseanne is fired but KO is not, it's not because I think they're similar, or to defend Roseanne in any way, it's to say that both are indefensible and should be held accountable.

The reason you see conservatives angered by these things isn't because they want to defend Roseanne, its because they get sick of it only being "their people" that are held accountable, even if they agree with how "their people" were held accountable.

No, I'm saying racism has caused harm, but CALLING someone a nazi has not.
not picking on you...but calling someone a nazi is ok but calling someone an ape has caused harm?

to me, you have cause and affect backward. Olbermann called Bush and Trump Nazis because he wanted to cause harm. Joy Reid called gay people names because she wanted to cause harm. Sam Bee called Iranka Trump a c-nt because she wanted to cause harm. Kramer called black hecklers the n word because he wanted to cause harm. Roseanne said she looked like an ape because she wanted to cause harm.

The name calling is the symptom of hate....against Jews, Blacks, Women........I simply don't see why one hate is accepted, laughed at even, while the other causes someone to be fired.

Seriously? You’ve missed out. Hilarious comedian, mostly based on insulting based on look/religion/race.

No, I'm saying racism has caused harm, but CALLING someone a nazi has not.

Calling someone an ape is racism. Calling someone a nazi is not nazism.

Calling someone a racist name doesn’t physically hurt the victim. Just like calling someone a nazi doesn’t physically hurt the victim.

But both have the same intentions

Actions by racists hurt. Actions by Nazi’s hurt. No difference

I'm deeply offended by you picking on me!

I agree all of the instances you reference are made with the intention of causing harm. But one has caused people to be enslaved, to be segregated, to be lynched, to be denied opportunities, to be afforded less opportunities, to be beaten, to be harassed, and on and on. The others have not. There's a big difference when the histories of those attempts to harm are so disparate.

Ok, but calling someone a nazi doesnt make them a nazi. Calling someone an ape does make that person a racist. People harboring and expressing racist thoughts has caused historical harm. People purporting to expose others as nazis has not.

Ok. But the victim of the racist verbiage often becomes a sympathetic figure (rightfully so)

The victim of the nazi verbiage often becomes a pariah (not rightfully so)

Fair enough...I appreciate the measured tone. to me, intent is more important than outcome. I don't understand why attempted murder is a lesser offense than murder (same thing, at least give the murderer credit for being successful-hat tip Seinfeld). I do agree that racial undertones are more egregious than "nazi". But I do not agree that calling someone a c-nt is less worse...women, after all, have been enslaved, beaten, stoned, hung and worse to this day in different parts of the world.

One note, slavery is not a USA thing. In fact, slavery exists in many areas of Africa today. And, racism is on ongoing problem in Europe.

Bottom line to my rant...hate speech is hate speech. Excusing one while not the other simply fuels the flames. Fighting racism with hate won't solve anything.

On a side note, the kind ladies of "the view" hammered the NY Post for their words about Kim Kardashian today (see below).

So it will be interesting to see their treatment of Sam Bee's 'c-nt' description of Ivanka.

That is - amazing on so many levels! LOL. ‘The other big ass summit’. Holy crap that’s good.
yeah...surprised the View made a big deal out of it. But, if they had Kim K's back over this, anything short of nuclear regarding Ivanka will be a complete double standard.
