Is women’s wrestling coming to Happy Valley?

Be angry at my comment if you like Rhino but there are some sports that should go away at Penn State IMO. Eliminate both tennis and swimming & diving. Both of those programs (men’s and women’s) need new facilities and the money should not be spent. Saves tens of millions of dollars. Do that and add women’s wrestling if you like. No need for new facility.

Just glad RGWhirly is not the AD! Sandy seems like one of the few ADs accross trhe country that gets it. You dont create parity or proportionality by having less opportunities for men…you do it by adding more for woman!!

Lol 😂 Yes, spend more coming out of Covid. Heck, why stop at one women’s team Add so many sports (men’s and women’s) that we overtake Stanford for most varsity athletic teams. Let’s do it, just because. 🙄

Idgaf about the other stuff, PA is the Mecca for wrestling, PSU needs to lead from the front on womens wrestling!!! Im sure we can raise the money to make it happen at no additional cost, see Hockey!!!

Pegula's check did not cover the cost of Women's Hockey or the carrying cost of the facilities. There is no such thing as a free building.

lubrano was in on the hockey creation? Did not know that.

As for womens wrestling.....If cael wants it, hell get it. If he doesnt, it wont happen.

Would need a staff for womens team I would think. I guess facilities are in place, guys and gals certainly can locker together in the woke-era. Once the casino is open, every 10th bag can go to W-wrestling.

Sorry, I meant Pegula. My point was that Hockey did indeed come with a cost to the University. I guess we shall see just how deep the slush is.

Why do you think that?

Why do you think that?
I will give it a shot:

-- She has been a great ambassador for the sport and being USA's first Olympic women's wrestling gold medalist (and now two-time Olympic medalist) and one of the faces of US women's wrestling would probably help her immensely in recruiting.

-- She has been in the sport for decades and is as technically proficient as they come.

-- She seems to be an all-around great person and I imagine many would want to wrestle for her.

-- Her having to deal with adversity in the sport (her health issues with concussions and her mental health struggles associated with that) I believe give her perspective and wisdom that I think will be very valuable as a coach.

-- She has been there from the start of American women's wrestling and has much credibility and respect in the wrestling community, especially women's wrestling.

-- She has sat under great coaching throughout her career and I believe she has the personality, intellect and communication skills to pass that knowledge along to her wrestlers.

-- I believe all the above-referenced points would help her greatly in fund raising and booster recruitment and engagement.

Those are some of her qualities that jump out to me initially.

And by far the most expensive of the 4 possible sports that were considered, Rugby, Rowing, Hockey and Synchronized Skating

OK, I took the bait. Sent Sandy and email.

Chances are a decision has already been made otherwise the leak would not have occurred and from SB of all people. Women’s Wrestling is the only logical choice.... what else could it be, rugby?

Move over Cash for Clunkers, now it's Crypto for Cauliflower ear.
I already had some ADA but bought more when @smalls103 started talking it up. Figure it will rise to a buddy heavy level six pack with his pushing by Thanksgiving...

But honestly take a look at Solana. Stake it, walk away and in 5 years you'll thank me with wrestling tix at the new wrestling only facility.

The ’logical choice’ will depend on what the desired end result is. If it’s about increasing participation numbers, wrestling is not the logical choice.

Well, as you say, just because someone has been a great wrestler doesn't mean they will also become a great coach. That seems pretty obvious, but not three exclamation points obvious . If I were an Athletic Director adding a women's wrestling program I would look strongly at Helen or someone with similar qualities. This is just my opinion on Helen. In this case I share the same opinion as Rhino80. I bet those who knew Cael well before he entered coaching felt he would do very well as a coach, but it was still just their opinion. Whether it be coaching or some other endeavor in life, I wish Helen nothing but the best.

AD says considering adding a womens sport

Sandy says PSU is open to adding a women’s sport. With State College now the Mecca of wrestling and with some women training at NLWC...how would this fan base embrace women’s wrestling? Could we sellout Rec Hall? I for one hope to see
In general, Dear Sandy and the PSU leaders are living in a virtual universe. If you read a book like Grasp (2020) by Sanjay Sarma of MIT you will come to the conclusion that universities are already riding a seismic shift to on-line interactive education. By the time dear Sandy retires, finding funds for all the smaller sports will be a luke warm memory. 10 years from now, if a person wants the on campus “live” experience, ... they’ll need to be rich and go to an elite institution. Football and Basketball are being professionalized. Olympic sports will probably all migrate to regional centers and become disassociated from individual colleges. Yeah - I’d love to see women’s wrestling, but, in my opinion it will simply be another sport that needs to cut post 2025 or so.
