If you were influential within PSU's Admin, how much would you increase Franklin's pay to keep him?

This link will help you gauge the salaries of other coaches, but you'll need to sort by "Scheduled School Pay".

1. Swinney $9.5 MM
2. Saban $9.5
3. Shaw $8.9
4. Orgeron $8.7
5. Riley $7.9
6. Mullen $7.6
7. Fisher $7.5
8. Smart $7.0
9. Franklin $7.0
10. Day $6.8
11. Patterson $6.1
12. Fitzgerald $5.8

So he’s basically getting paid exactly what he deserves. Smart and Day are underpaid.

IMO:

- $8m per year

- Commitments to rebuild/blow up/etc. Holuba and Nittany Apartments

- Very low buyout in the event PSU wants to "make a change in leadership for the football program"

- Buyout for Franklin to another school starts at $8m and decreases $500k annually

This would allow PSU to both address a couple of shortcomings while maintaining flexibility when/if Franklin isn't competing for B1G titles. If he doesn't take the above deal, let him walk.

Can't believe that Orgeron is making $8.7 million. LSU is definitely getting took to the cleaners. Wonder what his buyout is ?

And throw in something about putting other offers to bed quickly and not using them to up the ante.

The issue is not with Franklin's pay. The issue is with everything else around the program/department financially. See below for what I mean (2020 means the 2019-2020 academic year so Covid doesn't really affect these numbers):

1. Swinney $9.5 MM Worth it, earned it.
2. Saban $9.5 See above and then some.
3. Shaw $8.9 Overpaid.
4. Orgeron $8.7 See Shaw, but man is he entertaining.
5. Riley $7.9 Free pass of the B12 will cut him down in a few years.
6. Mullen $7.6 Still feeling his way out at UF...no instant returns.
7. Fisher $7.5 has the history of winning, could be a good fit. Seems fair.
8. Smart $7.0 He'll move up the list after this year.
9. Franklin $7.0 1 BT title in 8 years, 1-7 vs. tOSU, never commits to the school, holds them hostage
10. Day $6.8 OSU is stealing him right now, but he'll get his bump too in time.

To be honest Mullen and Franklin are the ones not really earning their money this far, but Franklin is hiring a new agent and still playing chicken with the school every year while getting his buyout lowered. This I'm holding the school hostage for their own good is fine when you are going to NYD bowls, but you were 4-5 last year and are on your way to a 3rd straight loss this weekend. You will have to fight to get to 7 wins, still no fix to a broken running game, but want that money truck backing up every year. It's a hard sell to me now, but if you are doing it you have to go with what @ThePennsyOracle has above.

I'm sure there were fans who wanted him fired after losing to Sooie Pig and Miss State.
There have been Bama fans that wanted Saban fired after losses…unfortunately having a functional brain is not a requirement for being a fan.

Zero with huge bonuses added for Big 10 and nat'l championships

Pay for performance
I like this idea for all coaches. Prorated salaries tied to their records might light a little fire under some classic under-performers. Imagine how much money Franklin would have left on the table in such a format. Maybe he would’ve considered giving QB2 a few more legit reps? And figured out how to score more than 10 points on a shitty Illinois team in regulation?

Negative $1m.

Is that a potential answer?

Probably not too many since 2007, his first year in Tuscaloosa.

aTm still has Auburn and Ole Miss. Lose one or both of those games and the glory from the Bama win will fade real fast.

I’d make it 100% performance based.

He gets $1,000,000 per win. If he goes 15-0, he’s the highest paid coach in the country by far. If he goes 4-5, guess he’s gotta tighten the belt that year.

You could do that and you'd be looking for a new coach. Not likely you could find one who would agree to those terms, at least not one you'd care to hire.

Sure....there is no right/wrong answer. That could be interpreted as a cut to his guaranteed pay, which you would probably agree to potentially offset with significantly higher performance based incentive pay.

If we are being honest all of these coaches are getting paid way too much to coach college football. Imagine making that kind of cheese to coach football. On top of that they have huge support staffs and assistant coaches who do a lot of the work.

This is very interesting to see. Why do PSU fans think the football team should be on the level of OSU when the program pulls in ~70% the revenue?

It's actually disgusting to see these small coaching staffs getting a total of 3-4x the amount that is being distributed to all the players

Wait - you are actually serious? I guess other professions do the same outside of incentive based sales?

What can you add to this?

$100K for each 5 star player
$75K for each 4 star player
$50K for each 3 star player
$25K for each 2 star player
1 star and 0 stars - coach pays the school back.

Attendance at 95% of capacity - coach gets 2% of gross gate receipts
Attendance at 90% of capacity - coach gets 1.5% of gross gate receipts
Attendance at 85% of capacity - coach gets 1% of gross gate receipts
Less than 85% capacity - coach makes up the difference between actual gate and 90% at 1.5 % of lost gate receipts.

The possibilities are endless.

So why does OSU pull in 70% more? Can't be because of stadium capacity.

He wants to win a national championship. His problem with Penn State is that they have the resources but he doesn’t feel that they are committed to doing so.
