Amazing read for Athletic subscribers.

BTW, For all the hate Dave Joyner got on here, he really hit this hire out of the park.
Yea but didn't he (Joyner) also come perilously close to hiring Al Golden before Franklin?

One of the most interesting parts of the article is that Franklin admitted he became so frustrated with how long the whole process was taking, he almost walked away from it. Forgot how hot those Franklin to Texas rumors were when he was at Vandy too.

Yup, Fester couldn't execute the closing before Golden caved in to the pressure at Miami. He also almost hired Chuckie before getting O'Brien.

No he didn't LOL

And every job has story lines, the bottom line is who is the current coach at PSU? Who hired him?

Can't read it since I'm not a subscriber. I'll give Joyner credit for 2 good hires. I also still despise him.
Think of it this way: Adolf Hitler was the genesis for the Federal Highway System and the running of the Olympic Torch to the host city to start the Olympics.

So even evil people can sometimes do something positive.

Chuckie would have been our friend till the end.

Good point psuro. Although, unlike the olympic torch having good intentions, the highway was necessary to fuel the war machine……literally.

Yeah, it's kind of like hiring a weeatherman whose forecasting track record is wrong 70% of the time.

Franklin was an extremely obvious choice. One would have to be a moron to screw that up. PSU needed a massive shot in the arm on the recruiting trail when BOB left, and Franklin was the best proven head coach on the market with serious recruiting chops and a desire to come to PSU.

Now he is our version of Mark Richt. Perennially good to very good and does everything well, but just can’t get over the hump.

Don't forget that he actually raised the graduation rate, which is why he is welcome as long as he wants so long as his whining about facilities and staff pay don't get too over the top.
