3.14.15 9:26:53 has passed for some. For others, it is yet to come.

In reality it's nothing, but I can't avoid being a little psyched.

It wasn't proved until 1761, by Lambert, that pi is irrational (i.e., not a fraction).

More importantly, it was proved in 1882 by Lindemann that pi is transcendental, which means that you can't construct pi with a ruler and compass. In comparison, the square root of 2 is irrational but still algebraic (not transcendental); you can construct the square root of 2 by constructing a right triangle with sides of length 1; the hypotenuse will have length the square root of 2. You can't do something like this with pi.

It's also Albert Einstein's birthday. Pi Day is a really big deal in

Princeton, NJ. My daughter went into her favorite coffee shop in Princeton today and they sold her a Brainiac Brew for $3.14.

I'm psyched too and thanks for the history. Also, I love pizza and there

are plenty of great pizza pi(e) specials today. A great day!

Why aren't pies square? Or rectangle? Are they cutting corners to make them smaller and round?

a Brainiac Brew for $3.14
... then add $15.92 for Pizza and Berry Pi?
