today's discussion on MBB show was around the impact of cost of attendance on ncaa MBB. the theory being pitched is that the Big Five schools with their COA, is going to drive more guys from the smaller schools to these larger programs - even if they are not that good. so that would mean a PSU would start to have a recruiting advantage over Nova, Temple, Georgetown, etc. If Nova's top two recruits suddenly were at PSU it would be interesting. the Big 5 conferences would start to dominate recruiting over the little guys.

this also suggests that the ncaa tournament would become more of a joke with all these small program teams.

if this were to happen, PSU could become legit in MBB, as we are in a great BB region.

The Big East teams will pay the COA, it's not much money for bball with only 13 scholarships. BC COA is just an additional $1,200 and Auburn is $4,800. The NCAA does not and has not informed the schools how to implement COA. Cost differences have to be evened out first. For example Alabama is not going to let Auburn pay more for players. Women will have to be paid as well. At most schools programs will be cut. Football scholarships could also be cut back especially with women being paid. 10 less football scholarships equals 10 less women to pay.

Don't think they can just pay BB, have to pay all sports, which can get....

quite costly for a small school

And wouldn't the Coast of Attendance be comparatively high for private schools, which would have higher tuition? And urban schools like those in the Big East would probably have higher costs for rooms than cheaper cost of living college towns.

The whole "cost of attendance" thing is a joke. These students were already getting full tuition, room and board, books and fees ... everything else is beer, car payment and travel money. So unless you're pricing the costs of beer, eating out at restaurants, car payments on cars college kids like, and differences in airport ticket costs, none of the costs you mention (tuition, rooms??? are you serious?) have anything to do with it.

When I was a college student, I didn't have a car, I rarely traveled unless I could bum a ride, and beer was a regular hunt for the best/cheapest happy hour deals.

These student athletes don't need more money, and if they think they do, they need a swift kick in the rear out the door.

It floors me that people discuss this like it's some rational thing, COA is a joke.

No - room, board, books, and tuition are already covered

in the scholarship. Thus they have no impact on the cost of attendance stipend.

Exactly. Lets not forget that athletes have meals paid for too. Are we seriously going to now discuss the COA due to difference in travel costs from State College compared to Columbus, Austin, or Los Angeles? Since when is a university financially responsible for making sure students can get home several times a year?

i cant see how anyone other than the big 5 power conferences can afford this - and many of them cant afford it. it also goes over all the sports. someone like Nova is going to be paying a fortune in terms of their athletics. Nova fields most of the teams. got to believe they would not pay, and stay out of this.

what would it mean if we took say the top MBB recruits from Nova, Temple, Georgetown and St Johns? this will eventually be the end of these little teams in the NCAA MBB tournaments, unless someone wants to keep them in for first round chuckles. If money doesnt mater, then the little guys are safe.

You make a very good point about what we consider as the "little guys" in the NCAA. While everyone is debating how much PSU will give compared with Ohio State or how much is Auburn is going to give compared to Alabama, people are not paying as much attention to the Villanova, Georgetown, St. John's type schools. This could really devastate them, (in all their programs- not just bball), which obviously would ripple throughout the ncaa. There are very few D1 athletic departments who are financially in the black to begin with. Smaller schools that don't get the football money are going to be really hit hard by this.

Big East will just cover the cost of the mens and womens bball teams. They do not have to pay all of their sport teams. The Big 5 will be picking and choosing which teams will get the extra COA. Football and bball are certain plus an even number for the women, after that no guarantees.

PSU has about as many sponsored sports as anyone.

I think OSU may have the most, a couple more than PSU (IIRC)

Even at that, PSU can - at MAX - offer about 350 scholarships (based on NCAA limits in each sport)
X $4,000 (or whatever that number ends up being) = $1,400,000
Which equals..........about 1% of the athletics budget........or about 75% of what they pay the ADs........or about 1/2 of what they are spending to "spruce up" the football press box.......or about 1/2 of the annual interest on the loan that Intercollegiate Athletics had to take out to cover the costs of the Corman VIctory.....sorry, had to do it ;-)

Put it this way.....the funds going to the student athletes (even though PSU has about as many of them as anyone) ain't coming close to breaking the bank.

A place like Villanova or Georgetown - with fewer sports and without a D1 football team....total costs probably well under $1 million. Any school with a big time Basketball program brings in plenty of revenue to handle that nut.
