How loud was the Penn State student section at the Whiteout? Check out the decibel meter
Regardless, Franklin, as he did on Saturday and on Monday, made clear Tuesday that the blame rests with him.
"What I am proud of is, we've created an environment here, a culture here, where players want to take responsibility, assistant coaches want to take responsibility, and I think there's a lot of value in that," Franklin said.
"Ultimately, I'm the head coach, and I'm responsible."
The fifth-year head coach was speaking on the weekly Big Ten head coaches call. He and his team are idle this week, which means the coaching staff will balance recruiting obligations with team responsibilities as the program looks to recharge before a visit from Michigan State on Oct. 13 at 3:30 p.m.
"What I'm always looking at is, have we improved every single week, and I can't imagine there is anyone out there who doesn't feel like we have improved every single week," Franklin said.We didn't do enough to win [the Ohio State game], and we're going to go back and do our self-scouting, and then get a head start on Michigan State and balance that with recruiting as well.
"This is painful ... but when viewed the right way, it can help us take the next step."
Franklin also addressed the struggles of the defense late in the game after the Buckeyes racked up more yards and points in the fourth quarter than they had in any of the three that came before it to complete a comeback effort.
"I think number one, we played our first-teamers at a much higher rep count than we have in the previous games, and that put us in the position we were in, but I also think we ran out of gas a little bit in the fourth quarter," Franklin said. "They got great players and great depth, and have had that for a number of years, and I do think come the fourth quarter, we've had guys play a lot more reps than they've ever played, and we started to wear down, and that showed.
"We held one of the most explosive offenses in the country way under their points total. We're always going to be improving to get better on our fundamentals and techniques. Obviously, based on how the game went for three quarters, I think our plan was pretty good."
