Regardless, Franklin, as he did on Saturday and on Monday, made clear Tuesday that the blame rests with him.

"What I am proud of is, we've created an environment here, a culture here, where players want to take responsibility, assistant coaches want to take responsibility, and I think there's a lot of value in that," Franklin said.
"Ultimately, I'm the head coach, and I'm responsible."

The fifth-year head coach was speaking on the weekly Big Ten head coaches call. He and his team are idle this week, which means the coaching staff will balance recruiting obligations with team responsibilities as the program looks to recharge before a visit from Michigan State on Oct. 13 at 3:30 p.m.

"What I'm always looking at is, have we improved every single week, and I can't imagine there is anyone out there who doesn't feel like we have improved every single week," Franklin said.We didn't do enough to win [the Ohio State game], and we're going to go back and do our self-scouting, and then get a head start on Michigan State and balance that with recruiting as well.

"This is painful ... but when viewed the right way, it can help us take the next step."

Franklin also addressed the struggles of the defense late in the game after the Buckeyes racked up more yards and points in the fourth quarter than they had in any of the three that came before it to complete a comeback effort.

"I think number one, we played our first-teamers at a much higher rep count than we have in the previous games, and that put us in the position we were in, but I also think we ran out of gas a little bit in the fourth quarter," Franklin said. "They got great players and great depth, and have had that for a number of years, and I do think come the fourth quarter, we've had guys play a lot more reps than they've ever played, and we started to wear down, and that showed.

"We held one of the most explosive offenses in the country way under their points total. We're always going to be improving to get better on our fundamentals and techniques. Obviously, based on how the game went for three quarters, I think our plan was pretty good."

Saw Givens and Windsor jog off the field during an OSU drive in the middle of the 4th and they were so exhausted they could barely make it. Shelton getting tossed, Jordan apparently injured, DT depth was hurting for that game.

Look, the Ohio State loss sucks big time, but there is still a LOT to be accomplished this year....in order of my "wants" this year:

1. Make the playoffs
2. Trace wins Heisman
3. Win BIG Ten
4. We beat the living Hell out of PITT
4. Payback for Michigan State big time
6. Get Jim Hairbrain fired by embarrassing UM on their field.
7. Embarrass Iowa at Home, again
8. Send Wisconsin back to cheese land with at least a 2 TD loss.
9. Beat an SEC team in a NY's 6 bowl

Still a lot left to be accomplished.

#6. We are better off with Harbs at the Michigan helm.

Thanks Judge for posting the thread early and not waiting for next week. Time to move forward to the next game! All this rehash, woulda, shoulda, coulda bull shizz isn't very productive. I'm looking forward to the next two weeks worth of all the fair weather fans' posts of how the Coaches suck, the Defense sucks, Mich St will run all over us Blah, Blah, Blah...:cool::mad:

I am able to confirm this. Judge, you must sit near section EF, where I was. I saw Windsor come to the sideline doubled over, just gasping for air as if he had completed a 100 yard all out sprint.

I saw #69, Thorpe, in at DT when $osu scored from the 5ish yard line in the 4th quarter. I believe he stunted outside the right DE, but was stuffed. The DL was exhausted and we were using OGs that just started playing DT in the last few weeks on critical drives. Building more 4-5* depth will be a huge help and is needed

It didn't help that Shelton, who definitely would have seen more time, was no longer available.

When you play such a soft OOC schedule, weaknesses aren't exposed. We are entering B1G play and we'll see how much better we're getting each week.

EAST LANSING - Michigan State entered its nonconference finale banged up at wide receiver and its health at the position got worse due to a significant injury.

Sophomore receiver Cody White suffered a broken hand in Saturday's 31-20 win against Central Michigan, coach Mark Dantonio announced after the game.

White was injured attempting to make a catch in the end zone late in the second quarter. He was helped off the field by trainers, went to the locker room and never returned.

"He has a broken hand," Dantonio said, so he'll be out for a little bit."

White had two catches for 40 yards on Saturday and, for the season, leads the team in all receiving categories with 20 receptions for 300 yards and two touchdowns.

"It's a tough break, no pun intended," Dantonio said. "He was playing very well and had some big plays in the game for us and has all season. But, he'll be back this season as well, so things could be worse, always can be."

White's injury came after the No. 21 Spartans (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) entered the game without a trio of receivers in starter Darrell Stewart Jr., along with Cam Chambers and true freshman Jalen Nailor.

"I think we'll get the other guys all back," Dantonio said. "We'll see when they get back and that kind of thing - they should be back relatively quickly, I believe, but we'll see."

  • Well Dantonio has also won several road games against ranked teams and Franklin I think is 0-12 all-time? Give me MD any day over this choke artist who talks a lot

  • They should probably find an elite coach first

  • Agreed. He’s such a fraud. Also, he used this as deflecting. He’s a shit coach and lost them the game. So instead of admitting that he said he’ll work to make them elite.
When we beat that loser again this year he’ll be 1-4 against Dantonio

  • I still don't understand the PSU perspective of being disrespected by Jack Allen scoring a touchdown. They couldn't stop an o-lineman lined up in the backfield from running the ball 9 yards into the endzone - it's not like we were giving the ball to LJ Scott while up by 40+ points. Yet having McSorely throw 50-yards bombs downfield while up 30-40 points in the fourth quarter was an appropriate response. Franklin is a thin-skinned, angry man.

Penn State's thrilling matchup with Ohio State last weekend is the most watched game of the 2018 college football season, ABC/ESPN announced on Tuesday.

The game, which saw Urban Meyer's Buckeyes rally for a 27-26 victory in front of a stunned Beaver Stadium crowd and television watchers all over the country, averaged a total live audience of 9,279,000 viewers and peaked at 12,537,000 viewers, which tops all games across all networks through five weeks of play this season. It was also "the network's highest regular season audience since its 2017 Kickoff Weekend record-breaking audience for Florida State vs. Alabama (56 games) and ranks in the top five most-watched September games on ABC in the last decade," an ESPN/ABC release said.

Further, the game tops the list of all college football games televised this fall by about two million viewers, as it easily surpassed the 7.24 million viewers who tuned in to see the Buckeyes beat TCU three weeks ago.

Some interesting Big Ten stats. Michigan State REALLY struggles running the ball. Get them in long yardage situations then release the wild dogs. They also have a porous pass defense. One of the big factors in the game Saturday night was how excellent Ohio State's punter was. Booming, high kicks forcing fair catches that made you hold your breath. Really turned around field position for OSU when their offense was struggling (related....Gilliken, besides downing the punt inside the 5, really struggled). MSU's punter stinks. Would be nice if that gave Thompkins some room to operate.

We can agree to disagree, but If he doesn't start beating OSU hasta la vista baby.

I believe it will take a lot more than losing to Tosu for Sandy to FIRE. FRANKLIN. . We do it every missed scoring opportunity, but I think a lot of things would have to go wrong for Sandy to take action.

Franklin is winning a whole lot more than he is losing, he is recruiting lights-out, and he is doing things the right way (clean program, high graduation rates). He’s safe at Penn State.

Franklin is still at the start of a long road of Success With Honor in Happy Valley. Enjoy the ride.

(And FIRE. FRANKLIN. at every opportunity. )

I'll stick this here. Brian at MGoBlog, pivoting neatly from his preseason predictions of doom for the Penn State offense sans Moorhead, Barkley, Gesicki. It's NEXT year that you're REALLY going to see us drop off a cliff. At least one Michigan fan gets it.

Brian
FFS, James Franklin. Next year is going to be real interesting for PSU. McSorley is the thing propping them up right now in their Moorhead Wile E Coyote year. Could be very different next year. PSU fans can console themselves on 24/7; Franklin is recruiting his ass off. Which he'd better since he's the gameday equal of Brady Hoke.

McSorley has gone from arm-punt specialist who would be exposed once Godwin, Barkley, Hamilton, Moorhead, etc left to now propping up the entire team? How is Moorhead doing at Mississippi State?

Watch these guys cry after they lose by 10+ if not more. Their mad their coach looks like a corpse and has the personality of one.

I have Penn State winning by 17+ against Michigan State for these reasons:
1. Coming off a bye week, 2 weeks to prepare
2. Coming off a loss and pissed off
3. Lost to Michigan State last year and ready for some pay back like 2 years ago
4. Homecoming, big crowd
5. Michigan State has not lived up to the projected hype so far this season

Pretty sure our lack of depth at D tackle was exposed during the first four games. That's why a converted guard was playing.

Yes,our Punter got injured in the loss to Arizona State. Backups punters are struggling. We’ve also struggled with giveaways and penalties. I’d sum up our performance thus far as underwhelming.
The one area we’ve been superb in is rush defense, but I noticed you didn’t give that stat.
