I have done this before but with the conclusion of another season I decided to take another crack at putting together a list of the greatest wrestlers in Penn State history. This is just one man's opionion and I look forward to the opinions of others.

1. David Taylor- I know he has one less championship than Ed Ruth, but Ruth did not have a Kyle Dake to deal with. Taylor was the most dominant wrestler in Penn State history and our only 4x finalist. 2x Hodge winner.

2. Ed Ruth- If somebody wants to put Ed number one it is hard to argue. He is our only 3x champ. He has 136 wins which is two more than Taylor. I just give the slight nod to Magic Man.

3. Zain Retherford- If Zain wins a 3rd natty he moves to number one in my book. I also believe that had he redshirted his Freshman year he would already have 3.

4. Kerry McCoy- I basically ignore his Freshman year when he had to cut so much weight. He was 131-1 as a heavyweight, and he dealt with some other very good heavyweights.

5. Quentin Wright- Q was so much fun to watch. 4x AA, 3x finalist, and 2x champ.

6. Andy Matter- I don't remember him. Was too young when he won in 71&72, but it is hard to ignore his 58-2 record. Would love feedback from those who saw him.

7. Jim Martin- Just one championship but won 155 matches against only nine losses. Ricky Bonomo owned him. He beat Martin 4 times and none of the matches were particularly close, but Martin was 2-0-1 against Tom Brands. 4x AA who never finished lower than 4th.

8. Sanshiro Abe- Another 4x AA who only won one championship. Career record of 125-15

I strongly considered including Cary Kolat. He finished 2nd and 3rd in his two years with Penn State. He won two National Championships with Lock Haven. If they had been at Penn State he would be no worse than 3rd on my list. Jason Nolf and Bo Nickal are both two time finalists who you could argue have done enough to be included but I am going to wait one more year.

Good list. I was too young to have really watched Abe wrestle, but looking at his records/tournament placements, he probably gets the slight nod over Nico for that 126 and under spot (Abe 2 time Big 10 Champ). Jeff Prescott was also a 2 time champ at 118.

You are absolutely right about Prescott. Major oversight on my part.

Great list and hard to argue with anyone you included. I have a friend that was on the team with Andy Matter (in the same weight class) and he would argue that Andy should be near if not at the top of the list based on his first hand knowledge of how good Andy was.

The thing that is hard to comprehend is that if you update this list in five years, we may have another 5 wrestlers that need to be included (Suriano, Joseph, Hall, and certainly Bo and Jason). The golden age of Penn State wrestling is upon us and the level of domination we're going to see will become the new standard for excellence.:D

Nice list. I guess I would swap Ed and DT. DT had Dake, but Ed kind of has an asterisk his freshman year with the injury at NCAAs. Coin flip, personal opinion IMO. I agree that Zain on his current arc should challenge the one spot. I don't see any criteria so I'm not understanding why you stopped at 8, but I think Nico and Prescott could make it 10. Bo and Nolf will be deep in there in a couple years and by then we may be talking about Suriano and Cenzo as well. Good times. Oops, forgot Mark Hall in the coming attractions list.

Nice list, glad to see my hometown boy on there, Jim Martin. He should get bonus points for beating Brands twice. Ricky Bonomo was a freak in the weight cutting department.

The danger in doing these lists is that you invariably forget somebody. Nico should absolutely be included along with Prescott. I would put Nico right behind Q at six and Prescott would fall right behind Jim Martin. Prescott has one more championship, but only 85 career wins compared to Martin's 155.

If Zain win the hodge tomorrow and again next year with 3 NC and 4xAA thats pretty tough to beat. Then 4 team titles, probably 90+ match win streak and just absolute domination of his weight class (3xs) gets the #1 for me.

Zains 2 loses to Streebler and 1 to Port probably a push to DTs 3x Dake and the Bubba Pin.

I have Ruth 1st, DT 2nd and Zain 3rd.

Can't put DT ahead of Ed, in my book, because "Ruth did not have a Kyle Dake to deal with." All-time greats define other people, they are not defined by others. Therefore, DT, as dominant as he was, is only #2 for me.

Either way, if Zain rolls through his senior year like this past campaign, and ends with a 3rd NC, he is the unquestionable (IMHO) #1.

I think John Fritz should be considered for this list at or above Abe. 3-3-1 in his three NCAA AA years, defeated 4x NCAA finalist and 2x Champ Pat Milkovich for his NCAA crown. Defeated 2x NCAA Champ Mike Frick 3 times as well.

Don't sleep on Fritzie!

Great list and these things are subjective but in my opinion I see Ed as number 1 , don't see that being replaced by anyone currently on the team. Zain and Nolf are super impressive and will be 2nd and 3rd on my list once they are done

I completely agree that Ed is number 1. I would say that an undefeated Zain next year leap frogs Ed, by a hair. That hair is that he has the best win which is Streebler, as a true freshman. Beating a guy the great Jordan Oliver couldn't beat.

Ruth was a 3X champion, Taylor was a 2X champion. Taylor was a 4X finalist, Ruth was a 3X finalist. They are both 4X B1G champs. Taylor has two Hodge trophies, but Ruth was nearly as dominant. I would put them side-by-side at #1.

If someone made me pick, I would favor Taylor slightly because (a) Ruth missed four or five duals during his senior year while Taylor never missed a match, and (b) Taylor never lost a match to a wrestler who wasn't an NCAA champion.

I never saw Andy Matter wrestle but have older friends who would probably still put him above Taylor and Ruth. That's extreme, but I think he has a pretty strong case for third on the list, at least until Zain is done doing his damage next year.

Ed Ruth was the best sooo far !!!!

Ed Ruth deserves a number one label because of his mat dominance.
DT deserves a number one label because of his mat dominance combined with the path his leadership has lead us through.

Everybody else lines up behind these two for they blazed the path for others to follow.

After those two.
3 Zain
4 McCoy
5 Matter
6 Martin
7 Quentin
8 Prescott
9 Fritz
10 any of several

This list will change as we move through this era. Nolf climbs high with his second next year.

When it comes to choosing between Ruth and Taylor I just always asked myself who I thought would win if they wrestled. Their resumes are virtually identical. Ruth was 136-3 and Taylor was 134-3. I know of no time they wrestled in folk style but they did wrestle in freestyle and Taylor beat Ruth pretty badly. I also don't think Taylor should be punished, when choosing between him and Ruth, for losing to Dake. If Taylor had won that match we would be talking about a 3x Hodge winner. This is all very subjective but I just wanted to explain why I come down ever so slightly on the side of Taylor.

Ed Ruth deserves a number one label because of his mat dominance.
DT deserves a number one label because of his mat dominance combined with the path his leadership has lead us through.

Everybody else lines up behind these two for they blazed the path for others to follow.

After those two.

10 any of several

This list will change as we move through this era. Nolf climbs high with his second next year.
Depending on who that #10 is, 2 or 3 Olympians don't make the list. That's saying something.

We shouldn't sleep on Bo either. He still has a shot at 2, 1, 1, 1, and his first title was against a 2 timer. If he could go spotless the rest of the way, he'd easily be top five. So we can't mention Nolf without Bo in the discussion. They are on the same trajectory.

can you do one by weight. obviously some weight classes have changed through the years but using the existing 10 weights and for before that just use the closest weigth.

You are correct. Besides that Bo is my grandson's favorite wrestler.

What is Sanshiro Abe up to these days? Anyone know?

It's hard to hold Dake against Ruth. Could we look at team points scored during the Nationals to see who had the most positive impact? If not then all things being equal it seems like three titles should beat two. Also our present five champions are all on trajectory to eclipse DT and Ed Ruth (???!!!). Good Times!

I'd go with Ruth over Taylor. If Taylor's only blemish was Dake, I might agree with having him #1, but Bubba happened. You can't ignore it just because Taylor ran in to Dake 2 years later. Dake + Bubba makes Taylor #2 to me.

They lean on it like a pacifier. LOL. The Bubba one is comical, it would be like after Gable's 9th consecutive championship, somebody kept making a thread entitled "Larry Owings".
And, to be honest, Bubba was their favorite punching bag while at Penn State. Then he becomes their folk hero.

All the more fun when a punching bag like Jimmy rings up a tech in the first round. That chapped some butts
