Penn State Wrestling Fans!!!!!!!!!!!

WE ARE officially back getting ready for another fun and exciting year at Penn State. It has been a busy summer with competitions, camp, travel, and training so it is good to be back to more of a normal schedule for our guys. We cannot make anything mandatory in the summer but most of the guys spent a good portion of their summer training. We still have a couple more competitions to finish this year out officially with the UWW World Championship and the U23 World championship but other then that we are about 2 months away from our first competition of the new season.

This summer we had several guys make the Freestyle National Team. To make the national team you need to place in the top 3 of the World Team Trials. Jason Nolf finished 3rd and Bo Nickal finished 2nd in this event. Now they both will transition to the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club where they will continue to train to try to win World and Olympic Titles. Zain Retherford(current NLWC member) also made the National team and ultimately the World Team and that will be written about later on in this update. We also had Brady Berge(Sophomore this coming year) win the U23 Nationals in dominating fashion by technical superiority over all his opponents. In freestyle if you are up by 10 or more points then the match is over. Brady will now represent the USA in the U23 World Championship in October. Bo Nickal also made the U23 World team via special wrestle off with the winner of the U23 Nationals at his weight class. We are excited to see these two compete for a World title in a little over a month from now. Aaron Brooks, who is a freshman for us, also competed this summer in the Junior World championship falling in the first round to the eventual Bronze medalist.

We will have a couple new faces in the line up this year with Jason and Bo graduating but have a very good core of our team back once again. We could potentially have several sixth year seniors in our line up as they all got time back because of injuries so that is exciting. The schedule for the Big Ten was just released so our full schedule will be coming out very soon. We have had some questions about our schedule and why it does not get released sooner but we are always waiting on the Big Ten. Once the Big Ten releases it then it has to be approved by our Faculty Senate before we can put it out. Hopefully this will happen real soon. What we can tell you is that the schedule will look a little different this year with having guys on our current team trying to make the Olympic team as well. The US nationals are in Texas this year and will take place in December. Placing in the nationals qualifies you for the Olympic trials so we should have a good group of guys competing there if you are looking for a fun winter trip. Like mentioned above once the Faculty Senate here at Penn State approves the schedule then it will be released.

With our team we are currently in the 8 hours a week of lifting/conditioning and skill instruction and then we are allowed to begin official wrestling practice on October 10th. The team is looking good and we have a lot of tough young guys in our program so that is fun to watch. The season will be here very soon.

In Nittany Lion Wrestling Club News:

We will have had 7 guys compete in different age group world championship this summer and fall and 5 National Team members that call the NLWC home. We have 4 guys competing in the UWW worlds in Kazakhstan beginning on September 19th(Franklin Gomez/74kg and Jaimie Espinal/86kg-Puerto Rico, Bekzod Abdurakhmonov/74kg-Uzbekistan, Zain Retherford/65kg-USA). We will also have 2 guys competing in the U23 Worlds in Hungary beginning on October 29(Bo Nickal/92kg and Brady Berge/74kg). Aaron Brooks also competed in Junior worlds as well like mentioned above. Ben Provisor made the National Team in Greco as he took 2nd at the trials and David Taylor was in the finals of the trials but was unable to compete because of injury. It has been a jam packed summer with some fun “challenges” but it is great to watch guys pursue their dreams. Many people have asked us about Zain’s situation and our thoughts on it, as they have heard a lot from one side, but ultimately, we were a 3rd party in this just waiting for the results of the case and then we would deal with it. What we think about the situation and how it was handled does not really matter but rather getting Zain ready to compete is what was and is important going forward. Zain is one of those rare type of guys that just does everything right and on top of that is a great person. He was ready to go with whatever the arbitrator decided. We are pumped for Zain and for what he gets to try to accomplish in a couple weeks.

Lastly this is a huge year as it is an Olympic Year and we will be hosting the Olympic Trials in the Bryce Jordan center in April. There will be an announcement in the next couple weeks on that and then the tickets will go on sale shortly after that. This event will sell out so do not wait to get your tickets. We are going to have a big group of current and former Penn State guys competing in this event with an opportunity to represent our country in the Olympics. It is going to be a great year.

Thank you for all the continued support

Casey mentions the schedule has to be approved by the faculty Senate. What are those folks doing? They must have the same vacation plan that our PA legislature enjoys ;)

Do we have a historian on board who can tell us how many times in the history of the university the faculty Senate has rejected the wrestling team's proposed schedule?

Faculty Senate meets six or so times a year. Next meeting is September 17 as far as I know, though don't hold me to that.
