Terry Killens, the former Penn State linebacker and defensive end is set to become the first person to play in and officiate a Super Bowl. He will be the Umpire in this year' Super Bowl and he played in but lost Super Bowl XXXIV with the Tennessee Titans.

Pretty cool. Have to be pretty good to get there either as a player or official.

But surprised it took this long. Guess most go into coaching instead of officiating,

NFL officiating is a part-time job. However, they make up to #250k per year. I guess "part time" only counts in terms of benefits and official legal status. Not sure about it.

I knew a guy who was an NFL official and an attorney. He had a lot of challenges on game weekends especially as he advanced to doing prime-time games on Mondays and Thursday nights. He had to be available from Thursday ~ Monday depending upon his assignment. He also was very challenged in getting to game sites on commercial airliners. He often fought thunderstorms in TX and ATL in the fall while fighting snow storms in Chicago and Green Bay into the winter.

On a side note, he decided to fly in with his wife and young boys for games. They got freaked out that the fans were vociferously booing their husband/dad. They no longer attend his games.

Terry was a good player but not a great player. Seemed very talented but also got in Joe's doghouse. Good for him.

Have to be good to get to the NFL and then they grade officials all year long and take only the highest graded to work the playoffs and Super Bowl. Congratulations to Terry for being selected.
