FC/OT: POLL: Favorite or 'Best' Movie Plot Twist.....***SPOILERS***

Best or Favorite Moive Plot Twist?

  • Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back

  • Superman II

I voted for Primal Fear, and here is why:

a lot of twists are interesting plot devices, but don't fundamentally change the arc of the narrative. Usual Suspects is a bit of an outlier, since you realize that most of the film you just watched was not real.

remove the last 5 minutes and the twist from PF, and it is a film about the moral redemption of Richard Gere's attorney character. Throw in the last 5 minutes and the twist, and it is a deeply depressing and cynical story about how easily corruptible the criminal justice system is.

BTW i voted for the Sixth Sense, had me going up until the wedding ring hit the floor, but then there is the wise guy that says " i knew he was dead 15 minutes into the movie". That kind of analysis always annoys me.

And how awesome Edward Norton was in his first big screen role (Oscar nominated - as an aside, can you guess who won the year he was snubbed? Hint: William H. Macy was equally snubbed....).

I'll throw another film in there, probably the biggest kick in the gut ending (though not sure it qualifies as a "twist")

I've never felt more abused than when I walked out of the theater after The Mist

one of the rare "film is better than the Stephen King material" productions, and a thoroughly shocking ending that deviates from the source material, but King gave it high praise.

YES! "The Invaders". I don't know why, but that episode really shocked me as a 10 year old. I could and still never forget about that episode.

That is definitely one of my top movies. Was the subject matter/plot too sensitive for it to get broader advertisement? I don't know, but that is an absolutely must see movie. I suspect it is more a guy movie.

As well as, "Forget it Jake. It's Chinatown." A simple line perhaps of no meaning to one who never saw the movie, but after you watch the movie, it makes total sense.

I was going to vote for "Titanic" before you reminded me of this one. Speaking of "The Usual Suspects," I've always felt that one of the many reasons that "Casablanca" is such a great film is that while the audience is anticipating the first twist, Rick not using the transit papers for himself, the real plot twist comes right after when Louis orders his men to "Round up the usual suspects," which was cleverly foreshadowed very early in the film.

The Shawshank Redemption is a movie with an excellent plot, inspired casting, quotable dialog and engrossing direction.

It ended with a significant audience pleasing plot twist.

It's twist does not have the eye-popping level of drama as some of the leaders on the list.

Yet, it's a movie that hits on all cylinders for many viewers as a well crafted cinema classic.

Anyway, after seeing Get Out, I was thinking I hadn't seen a good movie plot twist in a while - seems like every other movie in the early-mid 00's tried to work in some kind of plot twist. As for what constitutes a 'plot twist', I am being pretty liberal - I love the small one in Superman II that has a big impact, and also the ones that make you re-think the entire movie after it happens. So, anything that happens in a movie that changes your perception of the narrative at face value is sort of what I'm going for.

Not mentioned but certainly worthy is American Psycho - 80’s Wall Street nostalgia aside, the big payoff is when Patrick (who has been committing murder, rape, and torture throughout the film) realizes those were just fantasies and never actually happened.
 
I enjoy threads like this. Gives me a list of movies to watch. Planet of the Apes and a Beautiful Mind were the first two I thought of.

This is somewhat timely. Miracle. No way a bunch of American college hockey players beat the best professional Soviet players in the Olympics not after the Soviets beat the best the NHL had to offer. No way. Talk about an unexpected turn of events! Who would believe it? Do you believe in Miracles?

Shawshank is one of my favorite movies of all time but not a twist IMO

Surprised Memento didn't get any love. Maybe it doesn't hold up over time as I haven't seen it in years but I thought it was very well done
