FC/OT: House of Cards Season 3 - ** SPOILERS **

***SPOILERS FOR ALL OF SEASON 3 INCLUDING THE FINALE***

Will keep this brief but wanted to mention I finished HoC S3 last night and was extremely disappointed in the finale, notably, Doug's decision to kill Rachel. Everything else I was pretty good with and thought was handled fairly well - definitely a step up from last season (Frank's hiring of the writer and that entire plot line seems sort of pointless now, and Frank's decision to 'flirt' with him seemed weird and forced given there really wasn't any payoff for Frank, unless of course he's gay, which I don't know has been clearly established a this point his tryst with Meachum and Claire notwithstanding). I was actually pulling for Doug until he decided to turn the van around. Clearly, Rachel is a loose end, but then again, so is Gavin, but he let him live. I guess people love the ruthlessness on the show but for me that was a character not deserving of her death. Her entire life was screwed up by Doug, and I guess this is his revenge for her trying to kill him. I really thought, and wished, she had succeeded. Zoe's death was already bad enough - this show is just full of rotten characters. Unlike Walt in Breaking Bad, who was easy to root for, I guess at this point I'm on Team Seth? I guess next year looks interesting with the election heating up and Claire's departure. What did everyone else think?

I loved the season overall. I thought Spacey was amazing. Did a great job of alienating everyone close to him throughout the year. He can't just let Claire leave, so that will be interesting. I wish we'd get to see some more Frank political moves regarding Amworks. I love when he manipulates the system to get what he wants (only because it's make believe). Rachel had to go just so that storyline will die, boring. Doug being back will make for an interesting White House.

The Putin character was awesome, I'd expect more deals between him and Frank in the future. Maybe something that will help Frank in the polls? That'd be a real Underwood move, create an international incident designed to help yourself in a general election.

have to agree totally. Although I wasn't much invested in Rachel. She was still a sympathetic character, trying to do good.

Claire seems to be having a crises of character. We'll see where that goes. It is ironic that she was so ruthless climbing to the most powerful office in the USA but now seems to be doubting that strategy and, perhaps, realizing what a mess she's contributed in making. Perhaps it was when the gay Russian killed himself. But in defense of Francis, he's given Clair everything she's wanted and she's made a mess of it. She gave Francis three specific "slam dunk" recommendations that all turned out to be disasters. This has resulted in Francis having to do some shady things to get it OK'ed and also resulted in her getting fired (by request of Putin). Then she says that Francis is "too small?" Go figure.

Looking forward, will she stick by him? Will she compete with him? Will she run for President (they made a lot of references to her being more popular than him)? Will Francis hook up with Tom? Will Claire have Tom write her version of the book?

I agree, season 3 was not as good as 1 but was much better than 2. The show does need a hot gal because, in season three, there were none.

I had assumed that he took care of Rachel because he wanted to make sure it never came back to bite him in the ass wrt trust/loyalty to Frank. It seemed like there was an understanding (between Frank, Claire and Doug) that she needed to be removed from the equation.

I didn't particularly care for the ending with Claire leaving (or Remy) but it certainly leaves you with a lot of potential for season 4. Having to wait another year is going to be tough.

I'm interested to see what happens with Remy, Claire, the writer, etc. The writer seemed hell bent on getting that story out there. I wonder if he'll be the next Rachel that needs to be killed. Probably not, but you never know.

that writer had better be careful because he doesn't have a legal or moral leg to stand on. However, Claire could authorize it and use it as a weapon.

I wouldn't think she would do that. Frank has enough dirt on her to negate whatever is in that book. I'm pretty sure she doesn't want the abortion part getting out there.

Will Frank be assassinated?

The British version of HOC upon which this is based ended this way. I can see it happening at the end of season 4 while on the campaign trail or just after the general election. Perhaps, as we may have just seen in real life Russia, the Putin character will have something to do with it.

Yeah, Claire had a series of missteps and seems lost when it comes to playing big boy politics. She was great when manipulating others to get smaller things done (bills through congress, funding for her non-profit, etc.) but she's out of her element here. And I totally agree - Frank gave her everything she asked for and she screwed it up at every opportunity. Her scarf is what killed the guy in prison, so, another thing that was her fault. She needs Frank a lot more than he needs her (save her public approval rating). She's left him before and they don't really seem 'in love'; not sure how that's going to play out.

And I agree - the eye candy this year was Doug's physical therapist (Christina Bennett Lind), and she wasn't around much (and I think we can safely say Doug has a 'type'). And don't get me wrong - I love Deadwood alums Molly Parker and Kim Dickens, but we need another Zoe - stat (oh, and I forgot they shoved out Russo's former flame last year - Kristen Connolly; maybe Frank will hire her back?).

Yeah, but Gavin actually *did* try to blackmail Doug and Doug spared him. Rachel was doing everything possible to leave forever and he buries her in the desert. Seems inconsistent and unnecessary. Especially since Frank has stepped up his carelessness when made a pass at the writer (I guess he's killed next?).

well, she'd be a huge loss on the campaign trail. With the promised VP position going away, that may be a way to bring Claire back into the fold (make her his running mate). But she does seem to be flaking out...a crisis of character really. In real life, that's hard to reign in. Hey, perhaps Doug takes her out?

Have to say I have not been sold of Molly Parker's "Jackie Sharp" character. She seems way too mousy. And, in the debate, she knew she was going to get his with "aren't your kids in private school too?" Why wasn't she prepared?
