FC/OT: Antonio Shelton overreacting on Twitter?

to be clear, you find the racist fan’s letter to be ok because exposing it was a distraction to your preferred football team? You’re a racist.

Good Lord.

Seriously, are you for friggin' real?

True story: a few months ago my wife and I were asked by a young African immigrant couple in our parish to serve as godparents to their first child.

The priest was black. The parents were black. All 50 attendees were black. We were the only white faces there...and felt honored indeed.

I mention this by way of showing the idiocy of your vile accusation of racism -- a word people like you trot out at the drop of a hat to tar those who disagree with you.

As for the letter, my point in bringing it up was clear to anyone at the 4th-grade reading level: to place Shelton's most recent blathering in the context of a clear pattern of questionable, even alarming, behavior.

I'm sorry, the guy is bad news and a destructive influence. JF is bringing back a top-10 caliber team next year. The last thing he needs is a problem child like Antonio Shelton.

Make that two of us. Had no idea it was black history month until reading this post. Just keeping it honest.
Here is what Morgan Freeman had to say about Black History Month a few years ago.
Morgan Freeman on Black History Month
Actor Morgan Freeman said on '60 Minutes' that he finds the concept of Black History Month to be 'ridiculous.'

Claim: Actor Morgan Freeman said that he finds the concept of Black History Month to be “ridiculous.”

Is Morgan Freeman quoted as saying he is against Black History Month?

I’ve seen a transcript of a Morgan Freeman interview floating around where he claims the way to stop racism is to stop talking about it, but I’m unsure of its accuracy and its original context, and I was hoping you could give me a hand.

Origins: During a 2005 interview with Mike Wallace for television’s 60 Minutes news magazine program, Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman did say he found the concept of Black History Month to be “ridiculous” and maintained the way to get rid of racism was to “stop talking about it.”

The following video clip and transcript of that portion of Freeman’s 60 Minutes interview document his remarks on the topic in full:

WALLACE: Black History Month, you find …

FREEMAN: Ridiculous.

WALLACE: Why?

FREEMAN: You’re going to relegate my history to a month?

WALLACE: Come on.

FREEMAN: What do you do with yours? Which month is White History Month? Come on, tell me.

WALLACE: I’m Jewish.

FREEMAN: OK. Which month is Jewish History Month?

WALLACE: There isn’t one.

FREEMAN: Why not? Do you want one?

WALLACE: No, no.

FREEMAN: I don’t either. I don’t want a Black History Month. Black history is American history.

WALLACE: How are we going to get rid of racism until …?

FREEMAN: Stop talking about it. I’m going to stop calling you a white man. And I’m going to ask you to stop calling me a black man. I know you as Mike Wallace. You know me as Morgan Freeman. You’re not going to say, “I know this white guy named Mike Wallace.” Hear what I’m saying?

You pretty much whipped his ass with that reply

Forgot he was the player suspended for spitting on a MSU player in the 4th quarter of the Sparty game in East Lansing, which cost him playing in the Minnesota game on the road. He let his teammates down big time for that uncalled for unsportsmanlike penalty and suspension.

[I don't see this being something to jump up and down about and I would guess his coaches may even have a growth spurring discussion with him about how and when to use his platform best.[/QUOTE]
Seems the coaches have had a few chances for that with him. Either they are not interested, or more likely know JF, this young man has some intellectual gaps on these issues that he is not interested in closing.

Funny thing is Shelton began following some Oregon defensive coaches on twitter, iirc, after Spencer left. Which is generally seen as a precursor to possibly looking to transfer. You’d think a senior team leader wouldn’t be looking to bail on his teammates.

It’s a free country with freedom of expression. My hope would be that he put the focus on his studies and preparing for the 2020 season.

It’s a tad greater than fifty( I know you used the greater then sign).
But you’re right, I get annoyed at this over reaction to ridiculous stuff.

Are you talking about Shelton or all the guys in this thread that are losing their shit over what Shelton said?

We get to sit around and get lectured by this zero for another season? I have a better idea...

Somehow I’m skeptical. And while he has the freedoms you stated, we all do and can chose to ignore him, comment, stay away from football , or whatever.
For me personally Psu football and wrestling are my last sports standing . I just care as much anymore do to stuff like this and other similar situations.

Well, it is starting to appear to me as if I gave Shelton too much credit in chalking it up to mostly inexperience. Sadly, the more he talks, the less convinced I am that he is not simply manufacturing a problem. It's a problem that a team that is on the cusp of playoff contention doesn't really need. Hate to lose his talents on the field but he's let his teammates down before.

The ball is in his court. If he keeps doubling down on stupid, I'm guessing things don't turn out well for him. My hope is that someone with some sense talks to him and convinces him that he can be a starting DT on a potential championship team which will help him potentially launch an NFL career or he can wear out his welcome and spend his last season watching his former teammates and knowing the rest of his life what he missed out on.

Well said imo.

Good take.

Seems to me he got some good responses from his post about the long hair and the dude who wrote the letter. AS may have begun to think of himself as the self appointed team keeper of goodness. As a result, was out looking for his next score. The video looks like a kid riding the Lion like it was a race horse or brahma bull. I am not sure how race becomes part of that discussion at all.

I chalk it up to immaturity.

I’m not as forgiving with youth . He’s a shit disturber, and he will keep doing this stuff because he has a perceived payoff.
He will soon find out that others are also capable of rushing to judgement.

Has Shelton graduated? If not, it sounds like he's trying to lay the groundwork for his transfer similar to Justin Fields based on racial issues.

you may be right. he was greatly rewarded for the "long hair" post by his coach, ESPN and most around him. At least from what we know publicly. This was just a MAJOR stretch.

Was Shelton the first to post petersen's letter on social media? I am wholeheartedly against the letter, but I still say the players made it a much bigger issue than it needed to be by posting it on social media (especially in the middle of the season while they were preparing for a game). petersen didn't post his letter on social media. The players and coaches could have discussed it, but it did not need to be public.

(And, no, I am not defending petersen in any way. He's an idiot.)

He will be fifth year so hopefully he has graduated by end spring. He just seems to be a guy always looking for a reason to be offended and outraged.

Yep, do you realize the letter writer was right in many ways? Joe didn’t allow certain things that are allowed now. The writer was stupid to express his opinion that way imo, because Franklin is now the coach and he sets the rules.
I myself don’t like long hair and to many imo tattoos . But I won’t tell someone who isn’t in my circle my opinion, because it’s their right to do as they please. I have no say so I let it go.

So what were they supposed to do? Shut up and take Petersen's letter? Stick to the Free Jerry crusade.

I do agree whipping is bad. If I was walking by that guy I would probably say.” Hey, dumbass wtf are you doing. Get off the lion and shove that whip up........,

The letter was an "old man yelling at cloud" situation. The letter never mentioned race or anything that can be tied to race. Just things tied to the Paterno way, short hair, no tattoos.
Exactly. They made it about race. I’ve heard many guys from that age group bitch about similar things.

I do think that the media has played a huge role in making so many see things through the lens of race. That lens has been conditioned ever since they started marketing by demographics and targeting specific races for products. That lens has been magnified several orders since race became such a huge political issue in the media. It seems that many are now preconditioned to see non-racial acts through that lens. I wish it weren't so but everyday we are bombarded with race first stories and product pitches.

You’re right, along with certain folk benefit from the discord . Read Hate Crime Hoax by Wilfred Reilley, he explains it.

My great great grandfather was tarred and feathered for refusing to join the Klan. I insist nobody use down pillows or seal their driveways moving forward, it’s simply too painful for me.
All pillows matter! Now wait , was I showing support for you? Or confronting ? The intersectional game is hard.

I've actually agreed with a lot of things Shelton has been outspoken about over the past couple of years - and, I can appreciate when a young guy is being thoughtful and decisive in their opinions. With that being said, this feels like a reach and the way he refers to PSU: "at this school" kind of rubbed me the wrong way. You mean the school that gave you a full paid scholarship??

Shelton's case also isn't helped by what he did a few months ago. I mean, he spit on a kid from an opposing team. People don't forget something like that. And it doesn't give him much credence anymore.

Shelton is a total POS and I don't give a damn about the crowd that is going to have me tied over a fire(I mean nothing racial). It's easier to be indignant and offended then to reach out to this co-student and have a productive discourse with him about intent. Shelton and other social justice warriors on the team, and we do have a few, are more concerned with getting attention and publicizing these events than they are about conducting actionable measures to curtail systemic racism, if there really is such a thing on campus. I would think some older AA coaches on the team like Terry Smith and Franklin could talk some sense into guys like Shelton about what real racism looks like, assuredly, they have seen it. People derive their sense of self-worth through many different avenues and it's clear that Shelton sees himself as a social justice individual that believes more in virtue signaling than doing the "right thing." He is unwilling to put in the time or effort to make real change, rather, he wants to pick and chose what he finds offensive on social media and bring it to the forefront. He thinks this is how you start discourse around issues like racism, but it's not. If anything, it makes people more withdrawn, I'd hate to be a teamate of his(im white), I would be paranoid constantly of upsetting his very over-reactive sensibilities.

I guess I can give Shelton some reprieve, this is our culture now. He has been indoctrinated by his socialist teachers about victimization, self-pity, and blame of others.
