First, please don't yuck my yum. If you're not interested in the GG's, Hollywood, entertainment, acting, movies, award shows, etc. - just pass. I'll have the first matches for the second round of the Ms. BWI Bracket Poll later today, so something to look out for.

Some thoughts; great to see Ted Lasso and Schitt's Creek get a lot of attention - same for Queen's Gambit. Love Jodie Comer getting a nomination for 'Killing Eve' - she continues to deliver one of the best and weirdest TV performances I've ever seen. David Fincher's 'Mank' has had a split reception with film snobs, but obvious the HFPA loves it (Trent Reznor could get a win for his score here too). 'Hamilton' as a contender is interesting too; would make Lin-Manuel Miranda's EGOT bid a lot easier come Oscar season (the only award he hasn't won). I'm a bit surprised 'Tenet' was totally shut out, but pleased to see 'Palm Springs' recognized - it was the first 'quarantine' film I watched and felt it captured the moment more than anything else I've seen (if you haven't seen it, worth checking out).

Anyway, the GGs have been gaining more respect in recent years mostly because big stars like to go to them and have fun. I'm looking forward to them - anyone else have any thoughts or categories of interest? Will try to do a red carpet poll if I can - definitely interested in what Anya Taylor-Joy shows up in....

I really liked Ted Lasso but have to question jason S as being nominated for best actor.

The only other observation is to note how far motion pictures have fallen to TV series. The ten nominated for best in the "Film" category are really weak, as a group

A few random thoughts:

  • I think Bob Odenkirk wins
  • I bet most haven't seen Unorthodox, but it is definitely worth checking out on Netflix
  • Hamilton is not a movie. It is a recording of a Broadway show.
  • Liked Palm Springs but didn't love it.
  • Thought Jared Leto was great in a very mediocre movie.

That's likely because many movie premiers were delayed due to COVID.

So you are releasing a poll about the golden globes and then show us pics of women with Golden globes. What a day....

Thanks for posting...

Bateman or Odenkirk will be really tough to judge, both are so so good. Looks like I really need to get Apple TV for Ted Lasso. Many people tell me it is outstanding.

Hmm interesting... Why nothing for Da 5 Bloods? I thought it was good and Del Roy Lindo was excellent, along with Spike's Direction and speaking of Spike Lee why no love for a phenomenal job on American Utopia also lets get David Byrne some credit as well.
Odenkirk needs to win for Saul.
Ethan Hawke was good but he was playing a crazy person sooo....
I would take The Mandolorian over Lovecraft Country by a nose.
I need to see the Chicago Seven I've heard good things, especially about Sasha Cohen.
Leslie Odom is just pretty much stellar in anything he's in but I though both Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm and Eli Goree (Clay) were better.
Really liked Soul but its not in my top 5 of Pixar movies.
Boseman and Violla Davis were very good but I found it a very hard movie to watch.
I have to start Schitt's Creek and Queens Gambit.

+1. But I hope Jared passes on the next few "psycho" roles.

I saw some mixed reviews on this, but I really liked it. Cohen is great. For Succession fans, Jeremy Strong is also in it.

Loved Vanessa Kirby in Pieces of a Woman. The cold open of that movie is one of the best I've seen in a long time. Really liked Palm Springs. Haven't seen Mank yet. On the TV side, love Schitt's Creek of course, and Ozark, The Crown and Queen's Gambit. What are people's thoughts on The Flight Attendant? Haven't seen it yet.

We're working through The Flight Attendant now; it's a bit all over the place but once you settle in to the main story devices and their purpose, it gets more enjoyable. Again, not a lot of likeable characters though Kaley Cuoco is very good and pleasant to watch. What starts as a pretty cut and dry 'whodunit' begins to unravel into a much bigger conspiracy that gets better as the show goes on, noting some episodes are much better than others. It's worth your time if you have few other options - production value is very high and for these covid times, it very much scratches your 'travel porn' itch (Thailand, New York, Italy, etc.).

No nomination for Better Call Saul or for Rhea Seehorn? Whatever.

+1. there are some, IMO, glaring omissions in that list.
And I agree nothing for Rhea or Banks or BCS for show? BS.
And nothing for Da 5 Bloods and or especially Del Roy Lindo or Spike? Again BS.
At least they got Regina King right but again nothing for Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm and Eli Goree (Clay)? BS

Speaking of Reznor, I watched The Social Network again a couple weeks back and his work there is just outstanding.

I think I watch a lot of TV/movies, but then I see these lists and realize how much more I’m missing.

A couple things: I think Hamilton being eligible as a movie is odd. And even if it is eligible, Lin Manuel Miranda is a lot of things and incredibly talented, but I wouldn’t say a great actor is among them.

Regarding animated pics, I found Onward to be absolutely crushing. Somehow Pixar continuously elicits more emotion than any studio. The final few minutes just broke me.

I bailed out of that about half way through....my wife, a former FA from years ago, enjoyed it. I thought KC was really good and delightful. But I thought the episodes were circular in that each one was basically the same...something happens, she freaks out, it wasn't what it seemed, she survives another day, on to the next episode.

The rest I totally agree with. A good show but I got distracted with NFL playoffs and the start of hockey/basketball/golf.

Surprised Hillbilly Elegy didn’t get more love. Like best drama

Re: Miranda

Definitely the weakest onstage link; but perks of being creator/writer/producer ;).

Yeah I’m all for him winning any and all awards related to the creating, writing, producing part. For Moana too, I thought he did great there. But both his acting and his voice were not deserving of an acting nod, found that strange.

I thought Soul was clearly superior to Onward, though both were good.

The only other observation is to note how far motion pictures have fallen to TV series. The ten nominated for best in the "Film" category are really weak, as a group

Yeah, but that's to be expected. Most films that would have been released in 2020 were pushed back, so the crop is noticeably weaker than it would have otherwise been.
