“ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit said Tuesday that he hasn't been able to taste or smell since he tested positive for COVID-19 back in late December.

Herbstreit tweeted on Tuesday: "Been 5 months since I tested positive for Covid. Still can’t taste or smell. Anyone else experience this?? Did it ever come back?? Haven’t tasted a meal since late December. After 5 months...is this my new normal or will taste and smell come back???"

Herbstreit notably covered last season's College Football Playoff semifinal between Clemson and Ohio State during his diagnosis.

According to the Yale School of Medicine, as many as a third of people diagnosed with COVID-19 reported losing their sense of smell.”

His buddy Desmond Howard should be so lucky

this was the reason that i got vaccinated. risk of getting Covid and losing smell and/or taste or having breathing issues/shortness of breath (other symptoms some report months after getting covid).
that was the main reason for me as well .... but also I ddin't want to end up like the small percentage who really get F'd up ..... I have a mid 40's buddy who has been unconscious and on a ventilator since April 10. He was in great shape at the time, which I guess is why he has lasted this long. He will be leaving behind a wife and 3 kids.

Tragic. My heart goes out to that family.

Am I wrong to recall that people getting the vaccine long after getting COVID have reported that their long-term symptoms have diminished?

I am glad he is seeking out COVID advice from all of those COVID experts on Twitter. That appears to be a great move and I see he is getting all of the medical advice possible. The collective twitter COVID treatment knowledge far exceeds that of the vast resources of medical advice a TV celebrity could possibly expect.

I know of two who had no taste or smell until they got their vaccinations. I never got Covid luckily so I can not say from personal experience.

This is the reason I got vaxed. No one can tell us the long term effects of the effin thing. I know too many that had it and are still having issues with heart rate and lung capacity after having Covid. I don't wish poor health on anyone and hope Kirk(even though I dislike his O$U self) gets his taste and smell back.

works on some but not all .... gf still has no sense of smell, 7 months after Covid, 5 months after vaccine

I had a bad case of the flu in 1995. I lost my sense of smell. I've never regained it fully. It's improved but I never fully recovered.

I have seen hundreds of people who have had COVID and a significant proportion of them report lingering losses or disturbances of smell, and to a lesser extent, taste. If I had to guess, I would say it’s around 25%.
There are smell training exercises that people sometimes report as being beneficial, but they take months.
It seems like this is a bigger post COVID deficit for those in their 30’s and 40’s than any other group.

I believe that it's only anecdotal evidence so far, no "cause and effect" studies completed yet. Viagra was first studied as a boner pill because of anecdotal evidence. But, another reason to get vaccinated. Happy I took this seriously from the get go though.

Good luck to Herbie though.

And in many cases taste & olfactory partially return but are not the same.

I just hope we don't have to see any of those big ole crocodile tears again this year!

A friend of mine had it last fall and her smell and taste are still off.
She gets phantom smells often she says too

This illness is the craziest thing. My family (four of us) got it in December. The boys showed no effects at all and my wife and I had the chills/aches for a day and then were full recovered after 36 hours. Never lost taste or smell at all.

I don't think it will make any difference. He could not tell how much he stunk back when he COULD smell.

Agree, the long term effects are the unknown and extremely scary part. I have a niece (only 35) who is an emergency room nurse that caught this nasty stuff and was hospitalized back in December for a week and she's still having severe breathing problems. Also lost a close friend (he was 67). His wife - who also had it - also has lost her smell and taste but at least she survived after a hospital stay. I just pray all of the younger people who have had it turns out with normal health in the years to come

Finally, he can go visit Ann Arbor.

My wife still can't taste or smell for the most part. We had covid in Feb.
I really hope it comes back, I feel so bad for her!
I'm sorry for your wife. That must be tough. I've wondered, is this complete loss of taste and smell or just certain tastes and smells? Does she say she quite literally can't smell anything and can't taste anything? My daughter, some 8 months post-Covid still has issues with certain tastes but her senses of taste and smell, for the most part, are back.

It's possible that Micah finally slapped the taste out of his mouth for bringing him on the GameDay set. It worked out well for us but it may have cost the young man a lot of money.

Same thing happened to me (anosmia after flu also in 1995!). My ENT doc did a laser turbinectomy in the office (local anesthesia) and I re-gained my sense of smell.
