Could PSU break the NCAA scoring record in 2018?

Not surprising at all. 6 points is an AA, 8th Place finish. With what's back at 141, and IF Nick goes (we're a long way from that), I'm thinking it's more than fair for now.
Roar, not to quibble because I essentially agree with you, but 8th place by my math gets on average 7.2 points. That includes bonus.

2.5 Points for Advancement, 3 for Placement...5.5 Total, rounded up to 6. Wasn't looking at bonus. Doesn't matter, the point was that 6 points at 141 is fair at this time.

Would think you would have no problem breaking the point total next year. Just need some points from 125,133 and more from 141. With your 125 this year would have come close.

There were a LOT of points scored at the top of the team standings this year.

Three teams over 100.

Four teams scored at least 97.

Didn't Roar have a stat that having three teams break 100 at NCAAs was rare ?

In the era where 8 Placements were awarded (1979 - Present, or 39 years), here's the breakdown;

Exactly 4 teams over 100 Points: 1 year (2012)
Exactly 3 teams over 100 Points: 6 years
Exactly 2 teams over 100 Points: 10 years
Exactly 1 teams over 100 Points: 17 years
Exactly 0 teams over 100 Points: 5 years

Even though I used 1979, there have been scoring changes since then. In 1979, the Placement Points were; 16, 12, 9, 7, 5, 3, 2, 1...until 2001 when the current model was adopted (16, 12, 10, 9, 7, 6, 4, 3). In 2013, the brackets were a 32-man bracket, with 1 pigtail, so the extra "bye point" was eliminated. In 1996, the tournament became a pure double-elimination tournament.

BUMP.

Just a friendly reminder about all of the "everyone else is fighting for #2" talk going on in other threads. Yes, I know, I know..."But, but, but Suriano." That's the point, though, isn't it? Take nothing for granted, because you don't know what is going to happen five minutes from now, let alone a year from now.

You do realize this is a wrestling board. Boards are meant for discussion of topics including projections of next year. 20-20 is easy after the event happened.

with the NJ kid's points we are still at 162 (141.5+20.5), thats 9 AA, 6 finalists, 4 champs and we still would have been an AA placement from breaking that record.

Amazing how good that iowa team is/was.

Since D1 wrestling started in 1975, the average 1st place team score is ~ 123.5

Over that time 10 teams have scored more than 140 points
2018 PSU
2017 PSU
2012 PSU
2005 Ok St
2003 Ok St
1992 Iowa
1991 Iowa
1986 Iowa
1985 Iowa
1983 Iowa

I think next year with new starters at 125, 133 & 149 we could be in the 130 range again thanks to the Four horseman of wrestling.

Not to mention that Gable did it with nothing buy farm boys that had never seen a wrestling mat before.

g.

That is assuming that the NJ kid wouldn’t have done better with a year in our room versus the Jersey room...

1997 Iowa. Didnt they score like 170?

That 1997 Iowa team was terrific. Slightly different scoring at that time, they would have scored 175 (I believe) using today's Placement Points, and even more if we had the "64-man bracket" and free Advancement Points for winning a first match under the rules of 6 years or so ago.

I believe every wrestler was at or exceeded their seed, though it's hard to tell as seeds aren't listed on brackets of that time..

Jay Hammond's brackets show seeds. See link. They did exceed or equal their seed at every weight. Plus 31.5 bonus points. Great team and an even better tournament for Iowa that year.

118 #6 finished 1st
126 #4 finished 2nd
134 #1 Won
142 US finished 6th
150 #1 Won
158 #1 Won
167 #11 finished 5th
177 US DNP
190 #5 Won
275 US DNP

Also remarkable to score that many points with 2 DNPs.

Cue up Guns: need 8 scoring wrestlers to set the record.

If PSU had suriono’s 125lb points , which we all thought PSU would have in 2018, what points would they have had , and how close to the record ?
