The City of Alpharetta, Georgia, has decided to cease funding the annual Old Soldiers Day event and parade. The city has sponsored this event since 1952 to honor past war veterans, all wars. In 2017, the city band the display of the Confederate flag during this event, citing that the symbol incites racial tensions. As a result, the Sons of Confederate Soldiers, who have marched in the parade since it's inception, filed a lawsuit against the City citing it's 1st Amendment rights. The City decided that the legal costs to fight this lawsuit and also to fund the event could not be sustained, thus their decision to pull out of their sponsorship. The S of CS, stepped up and announced that they would attempt fill the void and fund the event. However, they have not been able to raise the funds necessary to pull it off. Consequently this event has been cancelled indefinitely. I believe that this cancellation is only the tip of the iceberg for these types of events across the country, especially if the police and military are being honored or on display.
