Penn State Wrestling Fans!!!!!!!!!!

We are now off and running into the new season with our first dual meet complete. We have had several redshirts and non starters competing over the past few weeks but this past Sunday was our first official competition on our schedule with a dual meet against Navy. Now that the season has started it will move quickly and it will be March before we know it.

The first weekend of November we had a good group of redshirts and several other young guys competing in the Clarion Open with some very good results. We had 3 finalist, 5 place winners, and two champions. We had 4 other guys get some wins on the weekend as well. We often get questions about why we are coaching some guys and why not others so I will try to explain. If a kid is red shirting(not competing for the team in any team events) then the NCAA does not allow us to pay for or coach the guys in competition. The kids have to find a way to competition, find accommodations, pay their own entry fee and meals and then also coach each other. It is not ideal and there is hope that someday the NCAA would change this rule. With the way the rule is now though it makes it hard for some kids to be able to compete as much as they would like to. Once a kid is off his redshirt then we are allowed to pay for up to 6 athletes an event without making it one of our official competitions on our calendar. You are only allowed so many competition dates so if you take more than 6 guys then it would count as a date. So as many saw at the Clarion Open, Coach Cody took a group of guys that we were able to pay for and coach but he was not allowed to coach the guys who are planning on red shirting. Hopefully that explains it a little bit for those who have been asking. These competitions are good as they give us an idea of where we need to spend time with our guys technique wise so it was fun to watch. We have some young guys that will be very fun to watch over the next few years.

This past Sunday we had our first dual meet of the new year and we thought our team wrestled hard. As is the case every year our guys will get better as the season goes but it was a great start for this group in front of another awesome sell out crowd. We had a couple guys wrestle up a weight class, as we are working back to full strength, and had a couple new faces in the line up so it will be fun to watch them progress as the season moves along.

Up next we have several of our college guys wrestling in the first Olympic Trials Qualifier on Saturday(along with several of our NLWC guys) and the rest of our team will be competing Sunday at the West Point Invitational. Saturday’s event is jam packed with many of the best guys in the World and Sunday is going to be a great tournament as well. We will have 15 guys competing on Sunday so it will be a great opportunity to see the majority of our team competing on the same day.

Thank you for all the continued support and we look forward to seeing many of the Penn State Faithful this weekend on the road.

GO LIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love these writeups from Coach Cunningham. Although not ideal, I think there is some value in cornering your teammate.
