James Franklin said after Sunday's win over Rutgers that he would talk about more about his pending contract situation at Tuesday's media availability. Now, according to the Penn State Board of Trustees website, the board's subcommittee on compensation is set to also meet on Tuesday for an impromptu meeting, having just meet in person on Nov. 11. No agenda is listed for the meeting, but it last held a virtual session in March to discuss the hiring of Penn State men's basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry.

I’ve been waiting for this type of BOT meeting to show up on the schedule in order to discuss and vote on Franklin’s potential new contract.

If I remember correctly, Franklin last got a contract extension in 2019, which was the result of his highly successful 2016-2019 years. Now, in 2021, Penn State is set to give him a new contract after 2 lackluster seasons.

^ Not sure I would call this season lackluster if we can beat MSU and win our bowl game. 9-4 is not ideal, but we are an injury and a few plays away from a much better record.
It's going to be a funny season to contextualize. Overall, I'd agree with your assessment. I can understand how people would be angry after the 5-0 start and the loss to Illinois is obviously unacceptable, but I would if they would've gotten to 9-4 in another manner if the thoughts would've been the same.

Then again, I'm a sports fan as well and I understand the anger when you're expectations change following a strong start and things go to shit. It's certainly one of the stranger Penn State seasons I can remember (on the field). A win over Illinois and the discussion is probably much different but, y'know, ifs and buts.

If true, this is just outrageous. How much is enough? I'm so damn sick of coaches begging for more money every 2 years when they just got a 5 year contract extension. Perform, execute, and win something significant before putting your hand out for more.
While I imagine Franklin is getting a pay raise, this is less about the individually salary and more about Penn State making assurances to Franklin about future investment in the program. If fans want a true contender, this should be something they're happy about.

They do seem to get overly excited and reactive with football coaches...can't say their instincts have been correct, but when they dig in their heals and open their (NO OUR) pocket books, it's hard to stop or close them....I once met Jerry Sandusky-no I meant stayed at a Holiday Inn...where are my $$$s.

^^^ this is what I disagree with….How does giving Franklin more money, a 10 year extension, and investment into the facilities give Penn State a true contender?

We as the fans, and this new contract, cannot control Franklin’s knowledge or lack of knowledge about X’s and O’s, Franklin’s time management, Franklin’s roster management, Franklin’s treatment of the football program as a family rather than a business, his recruitment of athletes who don’t develop into football players while at Penn State, his losses to OSU/UM/MSU. How is this new contract going to correct all of that so we consistently play for Big Ten championships and the playoffs? As one college football talking head (247 I believe) recently said “If Franklin doesn’t get to the playoffs with his 2022 recruiting class, then Penn State should move on from Franklin”.

And if he doesn’t make the playoffs with that group we can re-evaluate, but as of now don’t you want Penn State, whoever is coaching it, to have everything it needs to try to go head to head with the perennial playoff teams? James Franklin is far from a perfect head coach, but he did fairly recently lead Penn State to its best four-year stretch in 25 years.

There are better X and O coaches out there, but few that combine that with Franklin’s recruiting capabilities and ultimately it’s the Jimmies and Joes that win you football games. You can hire assistants and coordinators to make up for the X and O faults, but it’s hard to make up for a significant talent discrepancy with scheme.

This is pure BS. Franklin has been given everything he needs and much more to not only get to the playoffs but win a national championship. The problem is he just isn't good enough to get it done.

Well… I don’t agree. This should have been our ‘on’ year. tOSU was on an off year. I don’t see us doing better than a three loss season next year. Hopefully I am wrong…but…

Future investments by PSU is not going to make up for the garbage coaching and clock management.

Well this pretty much nails it. It gives context to his fragmentary comments at the QB Club and post-game yesterday.

I'm glad the drama is over, and I'm glad he's staying. He capitalized on the media rumors and buzz to leverage a better deal for himself...and hopefully the program...and you can hardly blame him for that.

However, the whole thing has been a distraction. Did it contribute to what happened against Illinois? Who knows. It didn't help.

I've always been a big fan of Franklin's from the moment he was hired. But it would be nice (though unlikely) if a provision in the new deal he's apparently getting were a 5-year hiatus on the annual mid-season will-he-or-won't-he drill surrounding his job. It's gotten old.

Before offering him an extension I assume they had a few meetings and discussed various issues. One thing I would have covered is asking him how much has he grown, what has he learned, and how will make changes in his methodology. The biggest improvement in the entire program, in my not so humble opinion, is that he finally adapted the offense to fit the skill sets of his players. I would cover that in more detail with him.

A coach, just like the players, is human. He makes mistakes, has tendencies and biases, and must always be learning and adapting.

I’m not a I want Franklin gone fan. However, he hasn’t done anything worthy to get a 10 year deal. Hell if he loses to MSU… his seat should be getting warm.

plus the schedule really lined up perfectly this year

I did see that the Chappahoonocks had lost their last best chance Matthew Klozer style vs West Side Petty- that's a really Tom Petty song man. That chit blows more than getting bullied by the 4×800 team cause U OWE ME like Napster Music 2 on 2 back on t h e d a y.

He has been given everything he needs, and more.
I am sorry what about our facilities are lacking? From the pictures below the football offices look amazing!

The locker room looks like a Star Wars Star Destroyer!

The weight room and rehab pools look like a 5 star spa!

Franklin's office looks bigger than the house I grew up in of course minus the beautiful outdoor terrace and fire pits that he has right off his office!

The players lounge looks like the best Dave and Buster's arcade in the country!

I couldn't get a picture of the new 24hr player snack bar where players can get all sorts of food and protein powder drinks anytime they want for free!

Where are PSU facilities "lacking" aside for some upgrades at the stadium that recruits don't give a crap about? We don't have a slide or a lazy river through the entire football complex!! Come on. Cut the crap and PLAY FOOTBALL!!! The players have a dream environment at LASCH. I remember talking to some old NFL players from the 70-80s and they told me they had 5-6 pegs and a shelf to hang there clothes on and a folding chair! That was it and they could play tough football without a slide and pinball machines!! Focus on winning football games!!

I’ve been asking this question for the past couple of years and NO ONE has been able to answer it. I’m starting to think that “facilities” is just an excuse. We did get feedback from a former #1 recruit who said Penn States facilities were lacking as compared to Clemson, Georgia, and Ohio State, but it’s also known that he was “shopping” himself and his girlfriend around to schools. I have heard that Penn State’s living quarters for players could use a modern lift. Maybe the “size” of the facilities are not as large, but I think the amenities offered by Penn State are the same as the other big-time programs.

From the outside looking in I have watched two PSU games this year and I don’t get it. The oline is not very good. Is PSU elite? Well there is no other school on the eastern seaboard that could match PSU. The irony is that I always believed that Paterno coaches for the love of the game. I know you guys can’t stand Narduzzi but he reminds more of Paterno, coaching in a place he likes as opposed to a coach looking for more money.

PSU is not recruiting against Georgia and LSU. It is recruiting NE Mid Atlantic and Mid West. What schools outside of OSU have better facilities?

It is a bit hard to explain because part of it is just a feeling when you are standing in them.

I was able to tour OU’s, and Arkansas’ new facilities/football centers. They are outstanding and laid out very well, and perhaps importantly, attached to the football stadium. I am aware that Ohio State’s is not attached, but from the outside their football center gives off an impressive vibe, and is huge

Lasch is very nice, but it is not the same as the others. It is getting much better for sure. I think the location and general aesthetics from the outside are just ok. It shouldn’t matter, but if adults get a different vibe, then recruits certainly will.

I believe a some of players may live in Nittany Village and that is an absolute dump compared to what some of other schools have.

Yeah, I think dorms/living quarters is the big dif. Some schools have ‘dorms’ better than a penthouse at a Vegas casino.

Our facilities are not lacking anything. We are in the top three, if not top two in the Big Ten. Facilities and assistant coaching pay are nothing but excuses for Coach Hype. He isn't good enough to get it done. End of story. We have 8 seasons worth of data points to prove it.

We aren't going to have very good seasons if the only schools we are out-recruting are the NE Mid Atlantic and Mid West schools not named Ohio State.

Georgia and LSU are exactly two of the schools we need to be beating out recruits for!

So is the BoT gonna go above Mel Tucker's 10 yr/$95MM contract? I realize that the job itself is almost a year-round "pedal to the medal" and is a stress on family life, but come on...

Can these dopes start building performance clauses in these contracts based on wins or other significant criteria? Otherwise in 10 years, these coaches will be earning $20MM a year and this sport will just be about the money and primarily focus on the same 4-5 teams for another decade.

I know exactly what I am talking about. That is why I know Franklin has more than he needs. Facilities and coaching pay are excuses for his inability to get it done. Franklin is a whiner of epic proportions and needs to shut up, acknowledge his failures, hold his assistants accountable and get to work.

and yet it appears in spite of your power and influence, he will get another mega deal, more money for his coaches and improved facilities. Everyone has a cross to bare....

How many times have you been in Lasch in the last 3 years? I’m guessing zero.

Start with qb LSU won am NC with an Iowa born qb PSU footprint one example no TVD from Connecticut and CV played at the Bullis school Maryland. PSU owns the NE and Mid Atlantic recruiting footprint

A healthy Sean Clifford means we are at worst a 1 loss team right now. Now, did Franklin choose the wrong backup qb? Perhaps but you just don’t kniw until you see them under pressure that exists in a real game vs practice. CV beats iowa and illinois, as does Levis if he did not transfer. It is extremely difficult to keep a competent backup on the roster in the new era of football. Franklin built a team that could’ve made the playoff despite the qb depth and lack of running game.
