Congratulations are in order for Penn State linebacker Brandon Smith, who was named a semifinalist for the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy, also known as the “Academic Heisman.” The award is given to the best football scholar-athlete in the nation, and includes an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship to each finalist.


John Urschel was the Campbell Trophy recipient in 2013, the only Nittany Lion football player to receive this honor.

Good for Brandon Smith, but there are 181 "semi-finalists." With apologies to Slim Pickens, that is a shitload of semi-finalists.

FWIW, there is another PSU connection to the Campbell: commit Judge Culpepper's dad, Brad, won it in 1991.

yes and his Dad totally screwed himself by not taking Ti (sp?) with him to the finals on Survivor, I mean he had it won, and grasped defeat from the jaws of victory. Everyone wanted to vote Brad off, but he kept winning challenges, so they couldnt. I wanted him to win, especially seeing how they didnt bring his wife back with him for another season (who I assume is Judge's mom).
