When I was a kid, this was called weather. Maybe bad weather. Now it's BOMB. CYCLONE. .

See the link below. From the article:

"(CNN) -- Nearly 3,100 flights have been canceled over two days as a "bomb cyclone" makes its way across parts of the country, unleashing blizzard conditions and hurricane-force winds.

More than 2,000 flights were canceled Wednesday and an additional 1,021 had been dropped by the early morning Thursday, according to data from Flightaware.com.

Most of the cancellations are at Denver International Airport where all runways were closed Wednesday because of icy conditions and extremely poor visibility caused by the intense winter storm, the airport tweeted. Roads around the airport were also closed or blocked by traffic accidents for much of the day."

I hope cnn was able to get sara to denver to bring us her expert coverage.

And, as is with all cable news, I am sure a banner named "Breaking", "Exclusive" and Bombshell was being streamed across the screen.

CNN is embarrassing. Bomb cyclone might generate more clicks than nor’easter.

Just takes me back to the weather fool getting pushed over by winds while a few kids walked casually behind him. It’s all BS.

They’re all selling hype. Epic bomb cyclone, distinguished from all the other bomb cyclones we hear about. That one was epic!!!

wow...what would really be awesome:

Epic Bomb Cyclone caused by Nazi Socialists who are racist, misogynist, anti-semites with Hurricane force winds making AIDS sufferers who are undocumented unfairly suffer.

My wife LOVES the weather channel. When the kids have a snow day, she leaves it on all morning beholding the biblical forces of nature while I hand-shovel the driveway since there’s not enough white stuff to justify the snowblower.

Bomb cyclone... SMH.

LOL, that just seems wrong.

I completely agree about the weather channel and most news outlets being way over dramatic with weather reports. It used to be the news would mention we are getting 6 inches of snow. Now there is hours of discussion on it. I always love when we are supposed to get a huge overnight storm, but when I wake up I could still mow my grass. All that drama for nothing.

I believe the term bomb cyclone refers to the rate and amount the pressure drops. Regardless, its mostly all bs.

Nah, wifey’s a good one. She sometimes joins me out there —even without being offered the opportunity. And she’s not just plopped in front of the TV as it just keeps rolling it’s hype.

Now, if anyone's wondering why the TV is just left on (or lights throughout the house), just know I’ve lost that holy war...

It's a meteorological term that refers to the rapid intensification (pressure drop) of a specific type of storm. Unfortunately it has been hijacked / bastardized in an effort to drive clicks and attention.

From NOAA:

https://www.noaa.gov/stories/latest-big-winter-storm-powered-by-bombogenesis

Bombogenesis: What is it exactly?
Bombogenesis occurs when a mid-latitude cyclone (sometimes referred to as a "bomb cyclone") rapidly or explosively intensifies over a 24-hour period. This type of storm system usually, but not always (as in this case), accelerates and strengthens over the ocean as its central pressure drops at least 24 millibars in 24 hours. (A millibar measures atmospheric pressure.)

What are some of the impacts?
The term bombogenesis is a meteorological one that specifically deals with the measurement of atmospheric pressure. The effects and hazards of this week’s fast-developing, low-pressure weather system include:

  • High, intense winds that can cause power outages;

  • Blizzard conditions with heavy, blowing snow and white-out conditions; and

  • Rainfall on snow that can cause river flooding.

Yea - it used to be that way before 24 hour news networks came about. Once that happened they need something to talk about to fill the time. You want to get away from the drama stop watching / clicking on 24 hour news network programming. If nobody watched there would be no advertising money and the networks would simply go away. Then we could return to the news being a 30-60 minute program once or twice a night, or maybe even simply consume news via the internet as currently is done.

totally agree. I simply quit watching Fox, CNN, MSNBC and the weather channel (in fact, never liked TWC). When I read a newspaper article on politics, I now go to the transcript and read the words rather than let anyone paraphrase or tell me what the person meant. My favorite new term is 'dogwhistle'. OK, I'll watch when there is a legit news event, but typically not for more than a half hour.

I'd like to think your post is exaggeration but it is not. Day after day, we see sensationalized content based on "sources" that turns out to be totally wrong. It is so reminiscent of standing in line at the grocery store reading headlines announcing that Dustin Diamond has AIDS or Princess Diana has six toes (sources say). Sadly, news media has become pretty irrelevant. This used to be called the "Fourth Power".

Once again though - if people didn't eat this shit up they wouldn't do it.

You can blame the nebulous "news media" all you want, but the simple fact is that your average consumer obviously prefers this kind of sensationalized news product over something less flashy. The demand is there so they're more than happy to supply it and this will continue as long as it is profitable.

If media outlets went back to a true subscription based model they could then afford to pay better journalists to produce better content. But most folks expect free news on the internet / tv these days so the providers of the news are beholden to advertisers. Whatever gets the most eyeballs and clicks is what they're going to do - so you wind up with hyper-sensationalized stories, more opinions than fact, news outlets cutting their world news in favor of soft core entertainment news on who JLo is marrying for the 4th time, etc.

totally true. I don't think anyone thinks differently. however, it has totally gutted their true value. Sooner, rather than later, people are going to turn off. I suspect, the next president, will be the one who effectively damps down this mess in the vein of Reagan's "there you go again".

I invite you all to Colo Spgs later today to help me clear my driveway. I'm sure after pushing drifts of snow 6 ft high across the entire pad a few more saltier phrases beyond "it's a nasty little storm" might escape from your mouth. Just a thought.
Don’t be so simple. I’d call it a blizzard and maybe even use the term cyclone, if appropriate. We’re not downplaying the storm. We’re mocking the hype. I’ll check later to see photos of the 6’ drifts in your driveway.

EDIT: and I hope that doesn’t happen to you.
