Most schools are having Spring games...certainly ones that have good programs. Penn State is having one too (called a practice). People are being let in, but only Freshman. What is the logic if that as it found easily leave in 25-40k without any issues according to CDC guidelines.

It is the sane logic you have seen since this whole pandemic began: “ Because we can” without any accountability for the harm caused.
I think if you head over to Beaver Stadium and throw yourself down and have your little temper tantrum in the middle of lot 41 (old red), you just might get the attention you so desperately appear to seek. You still won't get a spring game though. But you will get attention.

Not my cup of tea. Sounds like you have experience with that kind of behavior.

Can’t save Sandy from incompetence. But nothing wrong with pointing it out.

You must be correct. That’s why nearly all the other teams but Penn State have Spring games. What do Saban and Day know - the rubes?!

Everyone should follow the fighting CJFs coming off an immaculate 4-5 record with wins over next to nobody.

And all most here are asking for is more access to the event. Does not have to be a game. Run a practice if you want. But allow access and TV. And create an environment to support local business.

Again, it’s not that complicated. We are the outlier. Literally everyone else is moving ahead with the usual Spring game.

on the surface this does look like one of the stranger decisions we have seen.

do you think that this will in any way put us at a disadvantage to OSU or other BIG teams?

So do you think it easy to plan an event with a potential of 40k people visiting in a town of 42k? In reality there is a lot of logistical hurdles and coordination that need to be done. First responders are brought in from around the state. These people are already spread thin and you think it easy to throw together this event in a few weeks? I work for PSP and budgets, programs projects have been cut like crazy because of the pandemic. Do you think they will be thrilled to provide 100s of officers at overtime without charging for a practice? Imagine what the event security company going to charge to bring in security people on short notice? They have a hard enough time finding people to work normally how about now in a pandemic? Same with vendors, parking attendants and other stadium workers. So while it is easy to be a keyboard tough guy and say they should do this in reality hosting this event is a lot more work and expense then the benefit from it.

OSU hasn't even announced yet their plans fan wise. So no it not really putting Penn State at a disadvantage. Considering the NCAA extended the dead period until May 31 schools will not be allow to host recruits so I doubt there any disadvantage.

Geez, another message board logic warrior. We’ll have none of that here!:p

It's never good to confuse folks here with the facts.

all fair comments except it didn't have to be "on short notice".

Logic? What logic? If it’s so complicated, call Ohio State, or Nebraska, or most other schools and ask how they do it? It just an excuse to prolong this a bit longer.

Mild disadvantage. But it is a kick in the nads to the local businesses. And with zero logic behind it. Newsflash: games have been played with fans since fall and some are now at 100% capacity. If there was even a hint that this was a superspreader issue, the fear porn media would be all over it like white on rice.

Penn State should have been planning on this to be a ~25,000 event since Xmas. They could have charged for reserved tickets after accommodating students that wished to go and used funds to help local business, or first responders, or families impacted by COVID.

But instead the Governor wood lathe, President Onion dip, and the failed free-spending AD who f’d Cal sat on their hands.

So we are left with a streaming radio coverage (they could not even have TV, which they had in October?)... breathtaking incompetence.

You might not like his point, but you can't counter it by pretending he is acting like a child.

He is making a rational point and if you can't dispute it sensibly, then best to say nothing.

I am and we do. But not everyone is me.
So when I go up and support them by spending and they get rich, I'm the cause of that, too? In that case, what's my share?

Or am I only the cause of their business outcomes if they fail?

What a whiny bunch of crap.

Have no idea what point you are trying to make. I was encouraged to go to State College and support local business on dates other than football games. I simply stated that I do, but some only go when there is a game.

In case you have not noticed, a lot of businesses have been hurt or closed permanently through no fault of their own. I was just stating an opinion that this was an opportunity to provide support to that community. And not a risky opportunity but a fairly simple one that is and will be happening all across the country and in many, many venues.

So what’s whining?

i am watching the OSU game, and the first half is normal spring with second half being no contact. looks like around 25k with band and nice atmosphere. I am not sure when they decided to do this, but I know in early Feb is was still not sure direction.

McCord and Harrison look very good as a pass combo. All 3 QBs they have are solid.

How many of those are located In such rural areas doing it on such short notice? Most of the schools who are going ahead with crowds are in areas that have been open for months now.

Don't remind us that OSU took action rated QB from PA.

Lots of businesses EVERYWHERE have been harmed by the pandemic. State College businesses are no different. The notion the PSU football has some duty to them which requires them to do something the coach thinks is a bad idea is horsesh!t.

Lol, such compassion! I got mine so screw them! Great look for King Lib.

SC businesses rely on football biz to survive. Other cities have large populations to sustain them. Yes, areas around sports stadiums were hit hard but again they have a large local population to support them and most switched to a take out or delivery biz to survive until normalcy returns.

So, yuck it up at those that are losing everything they have worked for, including their investments. So when you make your next trip and have no where to eat, nowhere to shop, look in a mirror.

When I was in school, the Burrough was passing a tax on tickets to Beaver Stadium and the BJC to account for all of the extra “pollution and wear & tear on the roads” due to the inconvenience of people outside the community coming in for events. So, aren’t they getting their wish now?

Where’s my share? Really? If you spent money at some place of business it was a mutually beneficial transaction. You decided their goods or services was worth a percentage of your hard earned cash reserves. They decided your payment was fair for their goods and services. Since you both agreed to that transaction, you both benefitted or one of you would have refused. That benefit is your share.

Quit whining........

I’m sure the roads are very happy to not be worn and torn 😂

So making football fans pay over $1000 weekend with a minimum 2 night stand 4X what you would normally pay is OK?? My son got his Masters at Ithaca University. If we happened to visit him and there was something big going on at his school or Cornell hotel rates immediately doubled. I'm sure the same thing happens on off football weekends in State College.

I've got no compassion for businesses like this. Their business model is to screw fans and student's parents when ever they can. They are vultures.

I haven't read this whole thread so apologies in advance, but what was the reason given for not having a traditional Blue White game and televising it? I get maybe there isn't any attendance (or limited attendance) but why not put something on TV for folks to watch and get excited about? Seems odd.

Don’t blame the business owners for making money if people continue to pay for it. That’s just smart. In sales, I was taught to keep increasing the price until the customer says UNCLE! Maybe some people value the experience at those prices. For the brands most hotels represent they are in very good shape. Our owners reinvest in their product. They are not bandits. No hotels have closed. In fact, several parties have looked into building. This area will bounce back very quickly once the summer roles around. Top three economic drivers are now education, sports, and tourism. Look out for a lot of travelers once the powers embrace it.

I don't believe I read or heard a reason for no television coverage.

Bad decision, IMO. First, having one more hour of practice four months before the first game won’t make much difference. Two, having a game style practice is good for the players. Three, it’s a good recruiting opportunity hat practices don’t have. Three, like it or not, football is fan based. It wouldn’t exist without great support. And our fans help recruiting, help win games, help make PSU one of the most desired TV venues. Not only makes his job easier and more fun but also pays his salary. Four, the local businesses are really hurting and he should be willing to help them.

The only possible downside is showing some new wrinkles in both offense and defense, including scouting of the individual players. With Wisky as the opener that could be important. But if they are gonna allow in thousands of freshmen I think Wisky will find a way to get at least one person in.

Now I know this is where the self righteous will whine that someone dares give their opinion. That all us couch coaches are so damn smart. That we should be calling the plays. Insinuating we should just shut up and watch. Tough titties....it is a spectator sport meaning spectators are critical to success. Don’t like others opinions.....don’t come here as opinion are what this board is all about.
Given this is a dead period how exactly does not having the traditional Blue White game hurt recruiting?

Considering neither Beaver Stadium nor the BJC are in the Borough, that would not be accurate.

USC is having a spring showcase on PAC 12 Network for anyone wanting to watch actual football with fans (beautiful sunny weather too). Coaches drafted the two teams. Might be fun.
