Got a message from the Phillies today about this. And Pete Rose is being kept out of baseball--for gambling? Mind you I quite agree with his ban as he bet on games he was involved with. But this makes it that much harder to justify....

Nah, he still bet on games he was in, this seems like a completely separate thing.

This shows what a rigged system all the gambling industry is. They are essentially giving away hundreds of millions of dollars just to get you on their system, to get your contact info, and get you addicted. They know they will make that back several times over once people are hooked.

If you gamble, you are a fool.

Agree. MLB's gambling prohibitions are very specific and Rose has no case.
I fully agree--but the lines are being erased by stuff like this....

It wasn't that long ago that Willy Mays and the Mick were banned for associating with a casino....

"The lottery is a tax on people that are bad at math."

Do they still have those "gambling insider" commercials on sports talk radio? The scam was this:
  • Call in to get the "free winner" of the week. Let's say it is Jags/Dolphins with the Jags getting -6. Well, it is close to a 50/50 shot.
  • They give half the callers the Jags and half the Dolphins. The Dolphins cover and that half think "wow, they have inside information!" The company gets 100k calls, that is 50k gamblers.
  • Call then pays for "inside information" on next week's "guaranteed winner". That game is also ~ 50/50 so half win and that is 25% of the original 100k callers...the next week is 12,500...the next week is 6,250 and so on. In the meantime, you've got the new batch of first-time callers.
  • The company makes money on selling "inside" information and doesn't give a rat's ass about who wins. Its just a numbers game.
A business acquaintance's brother moved to Costa Rica and set up some offshore gambling. He was making a mint and the US Feds couldn't get him because it was offshore. They could shut down his site but it was wack-a-mole for them. it was just a matter of time until pro-sports got into gambling because with the WWW, no way to stop it. And this is where "greed" comes in. there was no way guys like Jerry Jones or LeBron James were going to get locked out of that payday.

Perhaps a bit, I agree, however as a Soccer fan, you know that Europe has this stuff A LOT.
I mean, my own Glasgow Celtic has a Dafabet logo on their damn shirt!
Its just another revenue stream but the MLB better damn well be sure to protect the integrity of the game (ha)

Agreed. I am lucky I have the ability to just walk away. I enjoy it when a friend drags me down to Atlantic city.
I know its throwing away money, and when I reach my limit, I stop. I just don't understand the compulsion (again, I am lucky)

What lines? MLB rules only applied to people in baseball (players, managers/coaches, umpires, etc). Hard to argue that legalized betting threatens the integrity of the game.

I wouldn't make such a sweeping generalization. There are some that do very well at it.
And some that do it once in a while for fun and they win some and lose some....no big deal. I bet a little on horse racing and I just do it for fun when I go to the track....I don’t lose much and I don’t win much, but it’s fun.

Not all but most are. Because they do too much with making gut type decisions that have nothing to do with actual Analytics.
I remember back in 20 years ago when I was an assistant coach and I got a call from the head coach telling me that I had to coach the game by myself that night. I asked him if he was okay and he said yes and would explain in a couple days. The reason that he had to go was to help his old high school friend who had run up quite a tab gambling. He had to sell his house near myrtle beach and came to live with my guy until he could get back on his feet.

Today, here in CLE, Bally Sports Great Lakes bought Sports Time Ohio which runs the Tribe and Cavs games. Bally is said to be working on tech to introduce in-game gambling with your cable provider. The idea would be to offer the viewer the opportunity to bet on some short term event like "Does Ramirez drive in the runner on third with only one out? $5 will get you $10 if the runner on third scores". That will be amazing.

Yep. There may even be a few of them on this board.

Odds of success are with the casino in table games. You're probably foolish to think you will come out ahead in the long run (unless counting cards, etc). Sports bettors and good poker players can change the odds in their favor. Anyone that can do that will likely have success and are from a fool.

Many of the other folks see gambling as entertainment that will come at a cost. As long as you stay within your limits and have a good time, I don't see anything foolish.

I do always love people that use Martingale or some other strategy at the tables that think they've found an edge.

That movie was painful to watch for me, with how awful and completely unrealistic any of the gambling scenes were...it was like watching that horrific "Money Talks" reality show from several years back following "Steve Stevens", a guy that claimed to be a successful gambler (and picks seller) yet had zero traits of anyone that actually wins at it.

Did you know that any college athlete can't have an account? Doesn't matter the level. They get caught they are done.

Yeah, my buddies tried that in Vegas once playing roulette. I told them it was not smart. They also sought out the tables where there were there were a string of consecutive red/blacks to bet the opposite (also not smart). Things went very poorly. I spent my time winning a poker tournament.

Your friends were doing it wrong...they just needed to find the hot blackjack or roulette table. I've been told that's the easiest way to win.
