Central Florida
I’m looking for input from other Floridians on things to do around Central FL that don’t require buying a $100 theme park ticket. Some things off the top of my head...

Blue Springs to see the Manatees!
Bok Tower Gardens
Air Boat rides
Gator land
Forever Florida (mud buggy rides, zip lining)
Casino Boats out of Port Canaveral
What else...?

KSC

How about the Space Coast? Only 45 minutes away. Lots to see there. Go to Canaveral Space Center or Kennedy Space Center Tours. Cocoa Beach is also near by as well.

Spent a week in St. Augustine last spring and it was phenomenal...very chill vibe if you’re looking for a “walking” community in which to relax for a day.

Which would you prefer, Cape Canaveral or Kennedy Space Center? We're probably doing this on Sunday the 30th, so, should I get tickets in advance? Any other info you could offer would be much appreciated.

I don’t live in Central Florida, but I’m going to the game, and I’ll be at the bars!

Most of these things I've never done but I have seen in my frequent drives to MCO.

The area by International Drive in Orlando is nice. There's the Orlando Eye and inside there is an aquarium and wax museum. I took my daughter there (around 10 at the time) and did two of three. Took three to four hours.

The Springs are nice... I don't recall which I visited but it was a nice day. The water is quite cool and takes some getting used to. Bring goggles.

You can do a three day cruise out of Port Canaveral for very little money typically. (I'm on a cruise out of NYC which just happens to stop in Orlando the day of our game... which means I'm attending)

The Holy Land Experience

Daytona Speedway is an hour away. They frequently have races.

There's a theme park called Old Town which has no entry... you just pay by the ride.

Someone mentioned St. Augustine... which is closer to where I lived. They will have Christmas red train rides.

It's unlikely to be beach weather that far north. Cocoa beach was quite dead when I went once that time of year, but it could also be 80s.

-Two separate outlet malls to drop the wife/gf off (Lake Buena Vista and I-Drive)
-TopGolf...if you want to have a family golf day but don’t want to pay peak season rates
-Next door to TopGolf is an Andretti indoor go-karting track
-If you want to gamble and avoid the seasickness, Hard Rock in Tampa is pretty much the same drive in the other direction
-Ripley’s on I-Drive is an excellent family spot. If you have daredevils, there’s a new aerial swings ride near the Orlando Eye. No idea about that cost.
-Driving I-4 around Orlando could be an amusement park ride in itself. Bring insurance.

we spend about 3 mos a year in Orlando in a property we own. love Kennedy Space Center. it is kind of like a theme park but without all the crap and crowds. the theme parks are packed during the holiday period - I went there once during a Christmas week and said never again. sometimes the few days AFTER Jan 1st the theme parks are good. so if you are staying a few days after the game you can get a deal on tickets and crowds not so bad.

if you try theme parks - Sea World the least crowded. Universal with Harry Potter a zoo. Magic kingdom total zoo - you may not even be able to get into that during holiday as they cap the crowd size.

Disney Springs has a lot of nice stores and restaurants. T-Rex is cool for kids, but a bit overpriced for the quality of food. They used to have an arcade with seven floors and all the old games from our youth, but they closed it and turned it into the NBA experience.

If you want beaches, go to the gulf side. Clearwater, St. Pete Beach, Anna Maria Island all are nice, but Siesta Key here in Sarasota is the prettiest beach you’ll see. It’s been voted the best beach in the US. It’s a couple hours away from Orlando. White sand that stays cool to the touch, even on 100 degree days in the summer.

If you do go to Anna Maria and want to do some water sports, stop by Global Boarding and ask for Robb Reid. Tell him Dave, his insurance guy, sent you.

Top Golf is fun, they also have iFly south of Tampa - indoor skydiving. The Tampa Bay Lightning have a very strong following - much stronger than you would expect. Orlando Magic games aren’t as exciting.

I have a vacation house in Merrit Island and it’s a really beautiful area. If you’d like a beach with big waves and small crowds you’ll want to go to Canaveral National Seashore. Right behind the beach at section 10 is a manatee refuge and they always come right up to the dock. Also the Kennedy Space Center is within sight of the beach. The only setback however, is that you’re going to have to drive 15-20 minutes from the city to get there.

Hard Rock casino in Tampa is nice. About a 50 minute drive from Orlando.

The science center is really nice for kids.
They could spend a whole day there.

Canaveral National Seashore

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canaveral_National_Seashore
The Canaveral National Seashore is home to more than 1,000 plant species and 310 bird species. CANA occupies 57,662 acres (23,335 ha)[1] (including lagoons). The park's 24-mile-long beach is the longest undeveloped beach on the east coast of the state. The southern part is also known as Playalinda Beach, the middle section as Klondike Beach, and the northern section as Apollo Beach.

Saint Augustine should still have Nights of Lights going. It will be 2+ hrs from the south side of Orlando but we’ll worth it.

Rainbow river is great for canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, etc. No manatees there (or gators), but it’s a very pretty river and lots of other wildlife. It’s about 1-1/2 NW of Orlando.

Wekiva Springs State Park is much closer and also good for a swim or canoeing. The canoe trip runs through dense growth and offers the opportunity to see alligators, so it can be a lot of fun if you are not from the area. Be aware that the paddle out from the spring is with the current and the paddle back is against current though, so much more difficult.

Crystal River is for swimming with the manatees. This will work best for cooler weather (nights in the 40s or 30s). It’s about 2 hrs west of downtown.

As far as beaches, it depends on what you are looking to do. If you like water activities, the Atlantic is much better than the Gulf. Look further south towards Cocoa, Melbourne this time of year. The water is about 10 degrees warmer than points north of the cape due to currents. If you are traveling with kids a surfing lesson can be quite fun. Just check something like swellinfo.com beforehand for conditions. Offshore winds (winds from the west) and waves in the 1-3 foot range would work well for a lesson.

For a fun (and old) beach town near Orlando, New Smyrna Beach has a lot of options for dining, etc.

On the Gulf side, Caladesi Island State Park (near Clearwater) is worth checking out. Access is by boat only (ferry is included with admission) so it is very laid back and unspoiled.

For spots to check out around the city, Winter park has a good downtown and some nice options for bars and dining. In downtown Orlando the best spots are around Lake Eola and the new performing arts ctr. Sheri’s (sic?) a sushi place and Ceviche (a tapas place) are pretty good from previous experience. Downtown Sanford is an up and coming area (again bars and dining) if you are staying north of downtown.

Hope this helps.

Loved Gatorland. Never did the zip lines, but that has to be cool.

We loved the air boat rides on Lake Cypress. Wild Florida Air boats & Gator Park was the place. Did it twice and would do it again. Loved, absolutely loved, going up Reedy Creek a bit.

I'd do Universal again in a heart beat...

If you do decide on the theme parks, both Universal parks have sections that are Harry Potter themed. I’m not a Potter fan, but even I have been impressed with them. If you go to Disney, I suggest Animal Kingdom. They redid part of the park as Pandora, the World of Avatar. The Avatar ride is probably the best simulation ride in Orlando. I would avoid Hollywood Studios. Even though Toy Story land just opened, there are very few rides and they are redoing a large section as Star Wars land, which won’t be open until next spring.
