Fear not.

Without a dog in the fight this weekend, as I sit here watching the Badgers run up and down the field on Michigan's defense, here's a look at the history of UMD's Blackout.

Since the tradition began in 2005:
  • The blackout has never featured two ranked teams... (came close this year, Temple)
  • Maryland is 0-1 playing in the blackout as a ranked team (2008, Loss to FSU 37-3)
  • Maryland is 0-7 playing in the blackout VS a ranked teams
  • Maryland is 2-4 when both teams enter the match up outside the AP top 25
  • Maryland is 2-5 in night game blackout games
  • Overall Maryland is just 2-12 in blackout games since the tradition began
14 seasons of blacking out....

2005: No. 3 Virginia Tech 28, Maryland 9

Leading 7-3 at the half, Hokies pull away outscoring Maryland 21-6 in the second half, spoiling first ever blackout at Byrd. Like the Whiteout, the blackout tradition began as a student section thing, and has evolved to encompass the entire stadium. Marcus Vick led the Hokies on offense, throwing for 211 yards, with 3 INTS, and 133 yards on the ground with 1 TD.

Fortunately for Clifford our ghost like roadies should give him a clear target to hit with a black (and white) background.

2006: Maryland 27, Florida State 24

Maryland gets rare win vs. FSU; Noles fall to 2-4 in ACC play
Maryland led 27-14 in the third quarter, but was not assured the victory until Jeremy Navarre blocked a 46-yard field goal try by Gary Cismesia with 42 seconds left. ... Gary Cismesia, that name certainly brings back some Orange Bowl memories...(Note the additional bleachers added at the top of the student section, the Byrd will have the same extensions in place next Friday night.

2008: Florida State 37, No. 22 Maryland 3

Florida State (8-3, 5-3) turned two turnovers into touchdowns in taking a 21-0 halftime lead. That was enough to ensure Maryland (7-4, 4-3) its first home loss of the season and ruin the Terrapins' bid to win the league's Atlantic Division. "I'm not happy because we haven't won anything," Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden said.

2009: No. 21 Virginia Tech 36, Maryland 9

Tyrod Taylor threw for 268 yards and a career-high three touchdowns, and Virginia Tech (No. 21 BCS, No. 20) built an early 24-point lead before coasting past Maryland 36-9 on Saturday.
When the game ended, Beamer and Friedgen -- two longtime friends -- met at midfield.
"He told me to hang in there," Friedgen said. Friedgen will begin the rebuilding process in two weeks. Beamer expects the Hokies to play into January.

Florida State picks off Maryland to hang on to ACC title hopes
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Christian Ponder threw for 170 yards and a touchdown, and Florida State (No. 25 BCS) beat Maryland 30-16 Saturday night to remain in the hunt to play in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game.

2012: No. 10 Florida State 41, Maryland 14

The defeat formally ended any chance Maryland had of becoming bowl eligible. The Terrapins (4-7, 2-5) have dropped five straight, the last three by a collective 119-37 score.
Maryland's skid coincides with the loss of its top four quarterbacks with season-ending injuries. Making his third straight start, Petty went 8 for 19 for 136 yards and two touchdowns but lost a fumble.

2013: Syracuse 20, Maryland 3

Maryland (5-4, 1-4) has lost three straight and four of five. The Terrapins have been trying since mid-October to reach the six wins necessary to earn a bowl bid.

2014: No. 12 Michigan State 37, Maryland 15

The same MSU defense that gave up 49 points to Ohio State a week earlier in a loss that killed the Spartans' Big Ten and playoff hopes was somewhat back back to the norm in a 37-15 win in front of 51,802 fans at sold-out Byrd Stadium.

2015: No. 22 Michigan 28, Maryland 0

The game was originally scheduled to be played at 8 p.m. but was moved up to noon for fear of bad weather created by Hurricane Joaquin. Although a stiff wind and an intermittent drizzle made it uncomfortable for the fans, it did not appear to affect the play on the field. Harbaugh records first B1G win.

(Michigan State lead 17-14 after 3 before Maryland scores 14 unanswered in the 4th to win it 28-17
Right in line with Dantonio's "thug culture" A Michigan State linebacker took 3 personal fouls in 11 minutes and got thrown out for targeting in the 1st quarter. His absence surely was missed in the 4th quarter, as the Spartans fell apart.

Well Maryland hasn't won the blackout game since the no-handshake game in 2014. I thought that stunt was worthy of a curse that lasts 20 years.

On the other hand PSU should fear the turtle. Until they find an offense they should fear everybody on their schedule.

Find an offense? The team scored 79 and 45 points in the first two games. Against Pitt Clifford struggled but we still had 389 yards and 167 yards rushing. Maybe you should ease up on the guys a little.

PSU doesn't exactly have a stellar whiteout record either. That's not necessarily a product of not playing well in the game, it's because it's usually the toughest opponent of the year. The same is possible with UMD.

Only OSU (53.5), Maryland (53), and Wisconsin (48.3) average more PPG in this conference at this point that PSU (47).
