“We’re only three days into Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, and yet the propaganda cogs are whirring fast as lightning, churning out “news”, opinion and content grist for the media mill.

In just the last 48 hours dozens of stories, images, narratives and videos have circulated as being taken from the fighting in Ukraine, a huge percentage of which are fake.

Now, some of it could be attributed to misunderstandings, mistaken identity, misattribution…but many and most are likely deliberate deceptions designed to provoke a response. Let’s dive right in.

*

1. “THE GHOST OF KIEV”

Early Friday morning it was reported that a single Ukrainian plane, a MiG-29, was patrolling the skies above Kiev. The English speaking press called the unnamed pilot “The Ghost of Kiev”, and claimed he had downed 6 Russian jets in air-to-air combat in less than 2 days, making him an official Fighter Ace, and probably one of the fastest to ever earn that title.

The trouble is there is almost no evidence this happened at all. To quote Newsweek:

There is zero evidence the “Ghost of Kyiv” exists”.
Neither side can confirm Russia has lost six planes in total, let alone to one man inside a single day. And a video alleged to be “the Ghost” in combat – shared by the Ukrainian Armed Forces – is confirmed to actually be footage taken from a video game.

Nevertheless, he already has his own Wikipedia page. A testament to how fast a lie can move while the truth is putting its boots on.

2. “RUSSIAN PLANES FLYING OVER KIEV”

A lot of people have been sharing a short video of Russian planes allegedly flying low over the city of Kiev. The Times used it a still from it in their story “Will sanctions stop a Russian shell?”:

The problem with that is it’s not Kiev, it’s Moscow. And it’s not today, it’s two years ago. It’s footage of what is likely a rehearsal for the 2020 Victory Day Parade flyover.

3. “ZELENSKIY VISITING THE TROOPS”

Possibly no politician in history has had a PR makeover quite as fast as Vlodomyr Zelenskiy. Last week he was just some guy, this week he’s a war hero, there’s talk of building statues of the man. A (not at all staged) “leaked” phone call had him turning down the US offer of an airlift to safety.

Twitter is dotted with people sharing photos of him in combat fatigues, comparing him favourably to Trump and Trudeau and asking “what other leaders would fight alongside their troops?”

But the problem with that is the photos are all almost a year old, taken when he visited the troops last April:

4. “LUHANSK POWER STATION EXPLOSION”

Early on in the confrontation, this video started doing the rounds on social media:

The video went viral, receiving 100,000s of views. Hundreds of accounts shared it, even major news networks used it, all claiming it shows a power station in Luhansk exploding after being hit with Russian missiles.

It does not, it’s a chemical plant exploding in Tianjin, China in 2015.

5. VIDEO GAMES. AGAIN.

This footage, claiming to show Ukrainian ground forces downing Russian aircraft, also went viral recently, even appearing on Spanish television news:

…It’s from the video game ARMA 3.

6. “RUSSIAN WARSHIP GO **** YOURSELF”

This was the first major propaganda narrative following Russia’s advance onto Ukrainian territory. Allegedly leaked audio showed Ukrainian border guards on tiny Snake Island in the black sea communicating with a Russian warship. Upon being told to surrender, the guards say “Russian warship go **** yourself”.

The Western press reported that all 13 of the men were killed, and the Ukrainian government released a statement saying they would all be awarded posthumous honors.

However, while the supposedly fallen heroes were being canonised all over the western world, Russia was reporting that they had not been killed at all, but taken alive and unharmed back to the mainland.

A story both the press and the Ukrainian government have since reluctantly admitted is likely true.

7. SYRIAN DRONE STRIKES FOOTAGE

Another video doing the rounds, and again shared by official Ukrainian accounts, was drone footage supposedly showing the destruction of a column of Russian vehicles.

It’s actually footage of a Turkish drone strike in Syria from 2020.

Meanwhile, other accounts were sharing footage of combat from Libya or Israeli bombardments of Gaza under the hashtag #StandWithUkraine. Middle East Eye has compiled a list.

It’s somewhat beautiful irony that so many of the clips prompting outrage in Western liberals actually come from wars their governments started.

*

There we have it, seven stories about the war in Ukraine that are demonstrably fake, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

There’s tons of other fakes out there, not to mention fakes of fakes designed to discredit doubters or just spread chaos.

Ultimately, it’s all a timely reminder that propaganda is at its most potent at times where the news is moving fast and people are feeling emotional.

That is WHY the media whips up fear, anxiety and hatred, because people in that emotional state are less likely to think critically.

It should go without saying that this is equally true for both sides. We shouldn’t blindly accept claims from the Russian side, simply because we know NATO lies. Both sides propagandize, and one-eyed scepticism is only a different kind of bias.

In short, if you see something designed to provoke an emotional reaction, don’t let it. Never get swept along in the narrative, always hold yourself back, keep calm and ask rational questions.

Withhold belief, demand facts. It’s the only way to keep your mind free.

Or, to quote HL Mencken:

Never believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see.”

The whole idea that Ukraine is winning is just a totally different level of stupid. Been seeing a bunch of that. Virtually everything out of the west is a lie. Russia is surrounding cities and sieging them. The western information war strategy is to get Russia to kill civilians to drag the US in. Whether through provoking them to be more aggressive or by giving a bunch of civilians guns they don’t know how to use, or stationing troops and equipment with women and children, Ukraine wants to bring the US in.

We need to operate in reality and not in this silly performative dance that everything in America turns into.

1) Obviously, I’ve said this before but we need to face the fact that going head to head with Russia over Ukraine is madness. They have the largest stockpile of nukes. If you’re EVER going to entertain taking them head on, let’s not do it for a country we have no interest in and where we poked the bear.

2) Taiwan is the big fight we need to be ready for. That and South Korea. extending into Europe in a corrupt cesspool of a country that offers nothing to us is wasteful. NATO is well protected. Taiwan makes 75% of the worlds microchips.

3) NATO members should step up the their militaries ASAP. Germany is going to spend $100B. That’s a start.

4) Democrats, or both sides, are going to come up with some way to use this event to take more rights away. Every crisis results in more power for the government, often on false pretext. I don’t know what they’ll try, but you should expect that they’ll come up with something.

5) Do you know how you know you’re being psyop’d? This war is somehow more important than others. When Putin invaded Georgia it largely went unnoticed. China is committing genocide and nobody cares. Ukraine and russia have been fighting in the donbass for 8 years, but now it’s the biggest deal in history. Don’t mind Yemen where we’ve helped saudis Arabia kill over 300,000 people with an enormous amount expected to die of starvation this year. It’s totally wild to watch a regime that yaps about white supremacy all the time all of a sudden give a shit about territorial integrity because the people are white. You are also hearing exactly zero in terms of “why” Putin is doing this. We’re not really hearing why the US won’t let the Ukrainians agree to a ceasefire. The regime thinks we’re stupid, subject only to the sensationalism on our screens and emotional blackmail. For what seems like most people, they’re correct. I get it with the left. They’ll just regurgitate whatever tv or social media tells them. But most of the right? Really disappointing. You’ve watched the state lie about almost everything for what a decade? Obviously really bad the last 6 years. And yet, this happens and they jump right into the hysteria without question. I’m disappointed.

You nailed it. I too am disappointed with many on the right gobbling of all the propaganda and allowing the corrupt msm to manufacture consent. Suddenly CNN and the msm are trusted news sources again seemingly overnight just bc a conflict has broken out. The large number of fake stories pointed out in this thread should be a giant red flag.

Not sure if you’ve read it yet but Lee Smith has a great article summing up the precarious position Ukraine put itself in:

“That Ukraine has allowed itself to be used as a pawn against a powerful neighbor is in part the fault of Kyiv’s reckless and corrupt political class. But Ukraine is not a superpower that owes allies and client-states judicious leadership—that’s the role of the United States. And in that role, the United States has failed Ukraine. More broadly, the use of Ukraine as a goad against enemies domestic and foreign has recklessly damaged the failing yet necessary European security architecture that America spent 75 years building and maintaining.
Why can’t the American security establishment shoulder responsibility for its role in the tragedy unfolding in Ukraine? Because to discuss American responsibility openly would mean exposing the national security establishment’s role in two separate, destructive coups: the first, in 2014, targeting the government of Ukraine, and the second, starting two years later, the government of the United States.

In the last year there have been two attempted “pro-democracy” inter-elite coups in pro-Kremlin states on Russian borders: Belarus and Kazakhstan. Both of those so-called “color revolutions” failed, but Ukraine represents a much more pressing concern, especially given the country’s push for NATO membership, which Biden officials like Secretary of State Antony Blinken publicly encouraged last year with no intention or possibility of actually making it possible. Yet rather than compelling the United States to rethink the wisdom of planting the NATO flag on Russia’s border, Putin’s escalating rhetoric—and troop movements—only made the Biden team dig in deeper….”

Tucker's opening re Ukraine was great tonight. He's a voice of sanity, which is why he's being smeared by the Usual Suspects and the propaganda organs. Lies are all they have.

The propaganda frenzy is out of hand. The flood of virtue-signaling and chest-thumping is one thing. But we've got a range of "respectable" people, supposed authorities, former generals, elected officials...actually advocating for World War III. The madness is scary. Seriously.

Re the disappointment expressed in your para 5, keep in mind that neoconservatism has been the operative foreign and military policy of Establishment Republicanism since Bush Junior, who came up with the whole cockamamie make-the-world-safe-for-democracy bullshit that underlay the Iraq fiasco.

The Clintons and Dem-Media are disciples as well because it's damn profitable, and they've got a major hard-on for Vlad. Indeed, Dem-Mediacrats have turned into good little fascists. Carry water for the War Party or you're a traitor. Meanwhile, as they focus our attention on Vlad's mortal threat to democracy, they're busily dismantling our own.

Trump broke from this consensus, which, if you recall, is one reason he struck a chord with so many people. In fact, when you get outside Washington and Conservatism Inc., among populist conservative commentators in particular, there's a much more skeptical attitude about all this and a large conservative audience for that skepticism.

All this said, it seems clear to me that things are not going as the Russians had hoped and planned. As stated in my 'weird invasion' post, the operation looks piecemeal and disorganized. The Ukies are "winning" right now by not losing. But failure is not an option for Vlad. He'll do whatever has to be done...escalate to whatever level is necessary. Big picture, it's an alarming situation, and I think maybe the shit is about to get real.

There's an old saying, never more relevant than now: The first casualty of war is truth.

It's kind of interesting... just the other day I posted that the 13 soldiers on snake island story was fake... which was completely obvious by that time.

Even then people still believed.

If recent history teaches anything, it's that when forced to choose between Reality and the Narrative, most people will opt for the Narrative. Especially when, as with the Dem-Media Party, their entire world view and even sense of self-worth are derived from the Narrative.

wow, you are going full Putin. Why not move to mother Russia, comrade?

You’re a gullible dumbass. That story may be true but the pic is from a 2018 gas explosion in Magnitogorsk. If the story is true why not just use a real photo not a recycled one??

They are using the same playbook they used in Syria, post staged pics of bloody women or children to get an emotional reaction. Remember the famous pic of the Aleppo kid in Syria that turned out to be fake? I’ve seen the pics/videos showing this was staged:
