2020 Phillies Thread

Two Aces as starting pitchers

Imagine Nola and Wheeler pitching Games 1 and 2 in a best-of-three series to open the postseason.

It could be fun.

Nola is 4-2 with a 2.45 ERA in seven starts. Wheeler is 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA in seven starts. Wheeler is the first Phillies pitcher to allow three or fewer runs in his first seven starts after pitching for another team since Fernando Valenzuela in 1994, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

Not Roy Halladay. Not Cliff Lee.

Not Curt Schilling. Not Roy Oswalt.

It’s Wheelermania in Philadelphia, minus the fans.

Wheeler allowed just three hits and two walks. He struck out six, getting 18 swings and misses. The Nationals reached second base only twice against the right-hander.

Make that 9 out of 10, Like the way Bohm is swinging the bat. Good to see Neris strike out the side in the 9th. Need Arrieta to bounce back tomorrow.

Solid bounce back from Jake. Phils are 10-1 in their last 11, first time since 2011.

Phillies march on with a 5-3 win over the Mets. Now 10 wins in the last 11.

They survived an 8th inning relief appearance by Hector Neris who came in with a 3-run lead, but gave up 2 singles and a walk before getting yanked for Tommy Hunter, who put out the fire. Workman finished in the 9th.

Bryce Harper got a rest in this one, and the Phils got offense from Bruce, Gosselin, and others.

Brutal September schedule continues -- I believe there are 26 games remaining in the last 23 days of regular season.

deGrom is at a different level -- struck out 12 over 7 innings; 1.69 ERA for the year so far

Phils need to bounce back tomorrow after 2 losses to the Mets; Wheeler should be motivated to face his old team.

Harper in one of his deep slumps again. Phils can't afford for it to last much longer.

Maybe, but he was 1-2 against deGrom today, and also had a walk and two stolen bases, did not strike out

Girardi gave him a rest the previous day, which made sense

No doubt Bryce is a big key to this team's fate, but let's see how he does

After a doubleheader split tonight, Phils will play 7 games in 5 days at Miami. These stats are not encouraging.

The Braves just lost their only starter that began the year as a starter so don't go complete bananas yet. This is coming from a Braves fan.

Rough to see Fried go down especially after losing Soroka earlier this season. What could have been. Rumor mill is Hamels may be ready soon.

It'll be a neck and neck Division race between the Phils and Braves. Should be an interesting finish... if the Braves can get any pitching help.

This bullpen is flat out awful. Hunter loads the bases and Workman gives up a 3 run double to tie it at 6 heading to the 9th.

Hunter had been my most disliked player. However, he had a few impressive outings but then has started to regress into his old self again.

Another brutal bullpen loss, how many is that? More bad news, Wheeler hurt his finger and won't pitch until Monday at the earliest. Not good with 6 games in next 4 days.

The bullpen will pitch game 2 tomorrow. What could possible go wrong?

Why is Hunter still on a major league roster? He was terrible pitching for the Orioles and after his injury the Phillies kept him in the roster. He's the best player on the visiting team. Ugh

This was classic Bad Phillies
  • With a 6-3 lead going into the 8th, relievers Hunter and Workman gave up 3 walks, 5 hits, and 4 runs
  • Meanwhile, the offense did not score in the last 4 innings, including the 8th where a lead-off double led to an excellent scoring chance that ended up with a bases-loaded pop out
  • The Phillies were coming off a rare day off, and the Marlins off a 20-run loss, but the Marlins made the plays down the stretch

Nola pitched a gem in G1 of the DH against the Fish. A complete game -- one way to eliminate the BP problems. The Phightin's bats also came alive, as the Phils won 11-0.

All of a sudden the Phils are a mess again. Lose 5 of 7 to the Marlins, back to .500 and injuries all over the place.

yeah, the series with the Fish was ugly. The lineup they threw out there against Sixto was embarrassing, in large part due to the rash of injuries. Coming into the season, the bullpen was a serious concern, and the starting pitching also had me worried. I thought the offense would be very good. Individual aspects of the offense have been good, but too many players went into long funks. The starting pitching has done pretty well after they figured out the 4th & 5th starters (though all the DHs have put a strain on the pitching staff). The bullpen is somewhat improved, though it's still sub-par, and Klentak is an idiot if he thought what he assembled for the 'pen could be effective.

Note about Sixto, he looked good but faced a lineup without Hoskins and JT. Both players work counts and potentially stress pitchers. Even though it was a 7 inning game, both players hit at the top of the order. Meaning roughly 4 more bats apiece at an average of 3 - 5 pitches per at bat; that's 25 - 35 more pitches, Sixto would not have lasted. Also, against a team featuring a few bench players, and not stars, Sixto's strike outs were down and walks up. He had walked 1 in 25 prior innings, walked 3 in 7 against Phils. Good arm though, maintained velocity throughout the game. Compare to Howard and Russo on Phils, 96 - 97 first inning, 91 = 92 by third. Are these guys destined to be bull pen pitchers?

Playing the Phillies is really doing a lot of damage to the top 5 pick the Nats had worked all season for

Stick a fork in the Phillies. After losing games started by aces (Nola and Wheeler), they are cooked. This could have been a successful season if they had at least an average bullpen.

Yeah, the schedule has done them no favor, but they simply lack the pitching depth to be a serious contender.

Don't have any direct stats on this, but they have had plenty of men on base in recent games and missed good scoring opportunities.

Alec Bohm has been a gem.

Does Klentak survive? The bullpen has been an issue for years. He did zero to improve it on an expensive team expected to contend. They’ve now wasted two prime Harper years and are going to lose Sixto/Realmuto without so much as a postseason appearance.

You’ll get over it. The feeling passed fairly quickly for me.
Another lost season for the Phils. Amongst the many stupid decisions for this regime, start with hiring Klentak. Now just look at this season, why would you challenge JT in an arbitration hearing and then beat him. Tell me there is no ill will. Next, tell me any trade Klentak has won. Saw Pivetta pitched 5 strong innings last evening for the Red Sox along with 8 K's. Pivetta had to be a better option than Hembree and Workman, throw in Seabold for a spot start. Biggest question/problem, where is Middleton, he needed to take charge of the JT signing, maybe he has while in the background, have to hope. While getting rid of Klentak, throw in McPhail too. Looking at other teams they have successfully developer Hispanic players, not so the Phillies, they threw away Franco and Hernandez, got nothing in return, not even a draft choice or slot $$$. Incidentally both are having decent years. Hernandez is outhitting Kingery by about 120 points. In fact the beloved "Scottie" may be in reincarnation of Mario Mendoza, old timers may remember him for the infamous Mendoza line. Well enough, can't wait for PSU football.

If the Phillies make the playoffs, there pitching will not take them far. Klentak needs to go.

Pack Morgan's bags too. He sucks. Walks two straight batters after having a 2-2 count. As usual, Neris fails too. Phils have lost 7 games with at least a 3 run lead. Tonight would be 8.

Klentak exit is long overdue, his personnel decisions are really alarming. Too smug a person to be effective as a leader. J.T. should have been signed and sealed immediately after the trade. The way they slowed played Bohm drove me nuts. Get me a baseball guy not an analytics guru.

Classic 2020 Phillies loss

Early lead, the bullpen fails (giving up walks in clutch situations drives me nuts), and the offense produces one run in the last 6 innings.
