2018 Recruiting Thread

Fields & Lamb have been dead to us for a very long time.
Here here. The point about Fields was in response to "And don't think for a minute they won't take Fields over Levis. Just saying." I focused on Fields' lack of interest instead of calling out the OP on the diss to our current commit.

It's all about collegiality on the BWI McAndrew board. ;)

Defensive line recruiting about to get real interesting. With Oweh and Parsons visiting this weekend and Smith planning two visits. There is no consensus among experts as some are saying only one spot left and Franklin hitting Smith hard. Others speculating Parsons may be first to commit. All are in play. I wonder if one will silent verbal amd announce later. Goes to show that no one for sure knows how this is going to play out.

I still believe we have 4 schollies left, if needed, and that doesnt count the possibilty of an OL not qualifying.
Most people, on here at least, seem to project both Hawkins and Culpepper as DTs.
So lets get Oweh and Smith; along with Hardy (an excellent prospect himself)
that gives us 3 DEs and 3 DTs; we can use them in this class.
Next year may be lean at those spots; but looking good at OL.
Parsons, if JF wants him, plays a blitzing LB.

Seems so simple to me.

Let's say we land either Oweh or Smith. I'm greedy and would love both, but it may not be realistic. Does this mean that Hardy or Cullpepper would then be earmarked for DT?

I believe Cullpepper himself has stated that he expects to play DT at PSU....

I didn't say anything negative. I simply asked what interaction staff has with unofficial visitors and what he was allowed to partake in. It seems that staff time is limited so would assume it's directed towards official visitors. Would also think that people on unofficial likely receive little or no benefits. Not sure why you responded so negatively

What you said:

Does Parsons get a free meal with his buddy or does he have to wait outside and buy a dog inside the stadium?

If PSU pulled the offer and has moved on, seems like this could really be uncomfortable up there on Sat.

Sounds negative to me.

Why would Parsons continue to visit PSU if he is not still considering PSU as a possible destination for his college career?

Everyone cool your jets. Let Franklin make his decision. I'm gonna do my part and walk back what I said before. Franklin looks at his team as family... he won't take in someone who doesn't fit the mold. IMO.

My thoughts:
4 scholarships left:
Going to 4 of the following:
Micah Parsons
Tyreke Smith
Jayson Oweh
Solomon Enis (Still think he is a silent verbal)
Rasheed Walker
Kwantel Raines

Walker has been very quiet. No announced visits during his season that I've seen. Wanted to take his official visit to PSU for Michigan game but not sure he can. Not sure when he's going to verbal. Maybe after the season, maybe not. Maybe take December officials, maybe not.

After Carmon's OSU twitter faux pas, I think Walker could be OSU's top OL target at this point. Will be interesting to see how that plays out.

With the reports about how good OT Desmond Holmes has looked in practice, along with the extremely small numbers left in the class, I wonder if the staff will prioritize the DEs and Enis?

CJF and staff have good eyes for talent.

I was surprised to hear reports of how good he has looked in practice and this early. This coaching staff has shown over and over to have an ability to spot talent early. I think this may be another case of that. A good season of practice and being in the weight room and Holmes has a real chance to be an anchor on the Oline for a long time.

Great point. Throw in the OL depth, and the Lions may pass on Walker. Like Miranda. Holmes is another three star that has impressed early.

All I heard was that Holmes earned his stripe, and as CJF said that is based upon many factors including class, respecting upper classmen, ..... So it does not seem to be the most reliable indicator of on the field performance. Were there other reports that indicated a high level of play on the foreign team??

I hope Walker doesn't pull a Christian Wilkins on us. Here he's quiet and we basically assume we got him and then poof, he's gone and we're shocked.

Oh, I don't assume at all that we got him.
I think if anything we are in a 3-way tie to land him.

A month or so ago, I thought we got him. But I think that BasicBlues twitter or whatever blew up his spot saying he was going to commit that night and was just waiting on his video, etc. After that, think we completely lost steam.

A lot of it is the weight training program, I'm sure.

If there are 4, my predictions-

Enis verbals during Indiana visit. If he does not verbal during the visit, then I think his slot is filled if PSU gets multiple verbals from DL.

Providing Walker does not get push from OSU as result of twittergate, his slot is secure.

On DL, I think PSU gets one max out of Smith, Parsons, and Oweh. I would prefer Parsons, Smith, Oweh. The only wrinkle here is if the staff feels that Parsons could be LB'er and Smith DE. Or if OSU feels the same. The readout this weekend will be interesting. Should be fascinating to see whether Oweh or Parsons responds glowingly. Will be interesting to see if it's first to verbal if there is one available spot. Looking at the dates, Oweh and Parsons this weekend, Smith in Oct, Oweh in November, and Smith again in Dec. Would seem to be Smith and Oweh over Parsons. I've flipped on this one constantly but I'll say Smith.

Raines - seems like he is the 4th if PSU gets one of the DL.

I'll say

Enis
Walker
Smith
Raines

Oweh to OSU and Parsons to a school other than OSU and Nebraska. I'm going to say it's a surprise and either USC or Bama.

DE is the single biggest need remaining in the 2018 class. CJF will get one of them for sure. Even if he has to go plan B. But if he projects Parsons at LB and somehow gets him, then CJF will get another DE.

I hope Enis is a silent.

When you look at oh-high-ya's verbals, OL number is about the biggest need. So CJF will have a real battle for Walker. If CJF does not get him, will that open it up for Raines.....

Maybe I missed this somewhere in the past, but giving a kicker a scholarship in this class confused me. Especially with how deep in talent the 2018 class is, and then looking at the 2019 class.

Not saying Pinegar isn't any good, but makes me scratch my head a little. Maybe he will gray shirt if we can take another top talent in this class?
That will put 2 scholarship kickers on the roster after Tyler Davis leaves. Barbir not working out (He is only a redshirt FR)?

In terms of value in the 2018 class, I would think being able to take 2 of 3 of Tyreke Smith/Micah Parsons/Jayson Oweh and NO kicker would be more valuable down the line than only being able to take 1 of those 3 DE's and a kicker. Just don't see a K as a must-need for this class unless Pnegar's accuracy and distance is head and shoulders above.

There is no doubt Enis is a silent. When the class was filling up and it looked like there might not be spots, it made no sense to have him scheduled for IU. What are you going to do, tell him to bag his visit? I think they wanted him to delay announcing so that they had a verbal to announce in Sept just to have the news.

I do agree that if Parsons would play LB'er than this closes out Raines most likely given that Coach James would still go after Smith and Oweh hard with Walker being the other take.

Give me any combo of those names and I'm stoked.

Walker, Raines, Enis, and the 3 DL. If we somehow manage 4 of those 6, that is a ridiculous close out. I still think that there is a surprise somewhere too either for losing someone, gray shirt, or prep.

I would normally agree but having a money kicker and punter is HUGE. I will trust the staff here. All I know is when you have bad specialists, it costs you games and everyone sees it. I think this class is just about perfect across the board with every and I mean every need addressed.

Completely agree that Enis is a silent commit and has been since Blue White April 22nd.

Hasn't visited any other schools since his PSU visit in April, and many of his other finalists are driving distance from where he lives (AZ State and Univ. of Ariz.)

Oh I completely agree. Special Teams is just as important (if not more) than Offense and Defense. Field position and being able to get points on the board is crucial. We learned that once Gillikin took over.

Wonder if Barbir will be the place kicker and Pinegar the kickoff specialist?
A little Julius and Davis tandem.
Pinegar is a pretty good safety from what I hear, so he can get down there faster than Julius and lay em' out

Especially the punter, when you have a qb that is really not that accurate. Lets you get away with taking shots down the field a lot more w/o knowing you are going to let the other team automatically flip the field with field position, as was the case in spades 5 years ago. Our punting was beyond atrocious then.

Special teams are 20x better now than they were 5 years ago.

I don't think Enis is a silent. It's obvious that Franklin isn't sure about Barbir. Was injured all of last year. They would love to have him be the kickoff specialist this year, but he couldn't beat out Tyler. His one attempt (think he's only had one) he kicked far out of bounds. You have a terrible placekicker next year, it could absolutely cost you games. Look at that Georgia Tech kicker....cost them the game against Tennessee.
