It's early, but here's my thoughts on the number of auto-qualifier allocations at 157 and 165, since those are the two weights most discussed on this forum re. PSU and the chance for a NQ to the big dance.

157
Appears to be a sure 8 at this time, outside chance at 9. Seven (7) of those have the required 8 bouts, only Deakin has fewer, and at 6 will surely get two more bouts.

165
Looks like 6, but with so many on the bubble-range this early, could be 7 or 8. All have the required 8 bouts except Berge, if he's our guy. Seven more bouts, with only six duals remaining is not the best scenario. Wouldn't surprise me if Berge goes to a tournament along the way. Edsell, with 10 bouts is secure.

If Berge goes with fewer than 8 bouts, he'll have to displace (finish higher than) at least one of the wrestlers that earned the conference a qualification spot.

Unfortunately the Opens schedule isn't very agreeable. Mat Town is the day after Iowa. Edinboro is the day between Ohio State and Nebraska. Last Chance is the same day as Rider, which would mean sacrificing Senior Day.

And of course there are no Opens on the 2/13 off weekend.

Could split starts on 2/4 and 2/6 and send one or both to Mat Town on 2/5

If the wrestler qualifies at big tens, it doesn't matter who qualified the spot, just how many spots there are.

Don't forget extra matches at duals.
Good point, not sure that's something to rely upon.

Meaning that 4 of the 5 remaining B10 opponents have incentives to not give Berge that match: Iowa for the team race, MSU has a bubble qualifier, and Ohio State and Michigan might not want another AA contender at the weight.

Nebraska has no such incentive, but would Manning go for it?

That leaves Rider ... and can't imagine the coaches would leave it up to the last match.

That's true but aut qualifier spots aren't transferable -- if Edsell earns one for B10 but Berge competes, then B10 loses that spot.

Agree that best case is to win at B10s and not need an at large.

But still need to manage risk.

Have you looked at who could fill these slots from the conference or stand in the way of our guys?

I'd like to think most of the coaches in Big Ten would provide the assist.

Cael can organize the Get Brady Some Matches Open on that weekend.

Didn't some coach (thinking Dresser but can't remember) pull something like this recently?

Would you like the list? Easy enough, but all I did was look at a few of the rankings, then using a bit of (uncommon) common sense. The guys closest ranked to the "bubble" (lowest-ranked guys earning the conference a spot) would be the guys our wrestlers absolutely have to beat.

157: Deakin, Robb, Saldate, Young, Lewan, Lee, Coleman, Modell

The argument here is that Berge breaks into that group easily if he makes 157. The other guys? Unless Joe Lee suddenly finds discipline in his game, the others are not likely.

165: Marinelli, Wick, Amine, Hamiti, Kharchla, Braunagel

Berge can easily crack into this group as well, but there is a much better chance that Edsell also can, too (especially if he qualifies a 7th spot).
