Competent politicians carefully manage their political capital. They accumulate it doing popular things and then spend it on necessary things. With luck the results of the necessary things turn into popular things. That is how incumbent presidents have repeatedly come roaring back from the dead in polls.

Trump doesn’t have a clue about this and wouldn’t have the self discipline to do it if he did. That is why his approval ratings have been almost flat for four years.

Biden has been a highly successful politician for forty years. He is going to come into office with the biggest momentum since Carter and is going to know what to do with it.

A massive repudiation of Trump’s racist politics is building

…..“For many white Americans, the things Trump is saying and getting away with, they just didn’t think they lived in a world where that could happen,” says Vincent Hutchings, a political scientist specializing in public opinion at the University of Michigan. Racist appeals in particular alienate white, college-educated women, and even some women without college degrees, he has found: “One of the best ways to exacerbate the gender gap isn’t to talk about gender but to talk about race.”

Trump’s racism has also emboldened white Democrats, who have often been on the losing end of racial politics since George H.W. Bush deployed Willie Horton against Michael Dukakis in 1988. “They’re embracing the racial issues they used to cower on in decades past,” Hetherington says.

This is what Parker had in mind when he wrote in 2016 that Trump could be “good for the United States.” The backlash Trump provoked among whites and nonwhites alike “could kick off a second Reconstruction,” Parker now thinks. “I know it sounds crazy, especially coming from a black man,” he says, but “I think Trump actually is one of the best things that’s happened in this country.”......

Trump decries ‘cancel culture’ — but no one embraces it more

In a divisive speech at Mount Rushmore on the eve of Independence Day, President Trump railed against “cancel culture” and the left’s supposed wholesale embrace of totalitarianism (err, “toe-tally-terrio-tism”). He accused his political opponents of “shaming dissenters and demanding total submission from anyone who disagrees,” arguing that such behavior has “absolutely no place in the United States of America.”

Unfortunately, no other American has spent more time, energy and (taxpayer) resources trying to cancel dissent and enforce submission than Trump. Here are just a few of the ways that Trump has used or tried to use the powers of his office to punish critics and perceived enemies:.....

    Donald Trump's shrinking electoral map

.....But privately, campaign aides, senior administration officials and GOP donors have begun to acknowledge what they call a more plausible scenario: a pair of losses in the Rust Belt, most likely Michigan and Wisconsin. That would mean the president has to win some proven Trump-averse states to crack the 270-vote threshold needed to clinch a second term.

Gone are the days of forecasting a landslide victory, said one person close to the Trump campaign. The president’s team is now recasting its expectations to identify not where Trump can win more, but how he can lose less.

“We don’t need 306. We just need 270. We can lose Michigan and lose Pennsylvania and still win,” said a top Trump adviser, noting that a win in New Hampshire, combined with one in Nevada or New Mexico, would provide enough Electoral College support to prevent defeat even if Biden wins big in the industrial Midwest......

Experts are calling for a 9/11-style commission on U.S. coronavirus response. Here’s where it could start

By the most basic of measurements — rates of illness and death — the U.S. response to the Covid-19 pandemic has been catastrophic. So it seems inevitable that there will be an independent, bipartisan commission to evaluate the nation’s preparedness and response to the pandemic, in the style of the famous 9/11 commission empaneled in 2002. Already, many experts are calling for such a panel.

The response to Covid-19 leaves behind a target-rich environment for any pandemic commission. Nearly 130,000 Americans have died of the respiratory disease since February. Over 2.5 million have become sick. And perhaps most jarringly, in states like Arizona, Texas, California, and Florida, the situation appears to be getting worse, not better: New coronavirus cases and deaths are skyrocketing amid substantial resistance to basic public health measures like social distancing and wearing masks.

The country’s long list of missteps includes decisions from President Trump, governors, local officials, and even activists who have vocally resisted mitigation measures like wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. Looking more broadly any examination could begin with the country’s failure to build infrastructure for testing and contact tracing in early 2020, Trump’s consistent downplaying of the virus even amid mass death, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s highly publicized testing debacle......

Federal judge orders Dakota Access Pipeline shut down, drained until environmental review completed
    Hunter

Protests by the Standing Rock Sioux and other Native Americans were met with police dogs and gas in 2016.

In yet another loss for the Trump administration and their incompetent attempts to sweep federal regulations under the rug, a federal judge today ruled that the Dakota Access Pipeline must be shut down, and all the oil in it removed, within 30 days. It's a sweeping win, for now, for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and others that fought to block the pipeline.

The Obama administration had put the construction of the pipeline on hold until an Environmental Impact Statement could be completed; most specifically, Native tribes whose land was being commandeered for the pipeline cited the danger of contamination of vital water supplies. As part of its nullification of anything the Obama administration ever did, the Trump team quickly approved the pipeline without an Environmental Impact Statement. Can't do that, said the judge. It broke the law, and the Army Corps of Engineers wasn't able to properly substantiate its reasons for not doing so. Until it's done, the now-completed pipeline must remain dry.
    .............
This is only the latest in a long, long string of court losses for the Trump administration, all of them caused by the Trump team's own incompetence and unwillingness to follow federal laws. There would be little to prevent the Trump team from approving the pipeline and other projects if they bothered to follow U.S. laws while doing so; instead, Trump's various appointees keep skirting those laws to produce quicker results. In this case, allowing pipeline construction without an appropriate Environmental Impact Statement weighing the risks posed by leaking oil violated the National Environmental Policy Act.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg's ruling today determined that those risks outweighed the claimed financial damages to Dakota Access from a temporary shutdown of the pipeline, a risk the pipeline's backers assumed "knowingly" when they pushed forward with construction.

The pipeline will now be forced out of operation until that environmental assessment is completed. That is likely to stretch into 2021, meaning it will be under the jurisdiction, hopefully, of a new and less egregiously incompetent set of administrative leaders.

Trump attacks NASCAR’s Bubba Wallace, fellow driver hits Donald back
    Lauren Floyd

On the heels of widespread protests regarding the brutal detainment and death of George Floyd, somehow President Donald Trump is prioritizing attempts to discredit reports of racism. First, he called the protesters seeking an end to racism and police brutality “thugs.” Now he’s attempting to discredit NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace, who went public about a noose found in his garage last month.

Although the FBI quickly washed its hands of a hate crime investigation regarding the noose, NASCAR officials released a photo of the hate symbol and NASCAR President Steve Phelps defended Wallace, who is the company’s only Black driver in the Cup Series. That apparently wasn’t enough to convince the president that Wallace’s report of racism was legitimate. Instead, the commander in chief wrote the incident off as a “HOAX” and attempted to connect it to NASCAR’s decision to ban the Confederate flag in a tweet Monday.
    .....
“Has @BubbaWallace apologized to all of those great NASCAR drivers & officials who came to his aid, stood by his side, & were willing to sacrifice everything for him, only to find out that the whole thing was just another HOAX? That & Flag decision has caused lowest ratings EVER!" Trump tweeted.

And just like that, he got his usual mix of coddling from apologists and criticism from people who know better, including NASCAR driver Tyler Reddick. “We don’t need an apology. We did what was right and we will do just fine without your support,” Reddick tweeted.

TTM note: Reddick's tweet has been deleted
    ……...
Former Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill tweeted: "Seriously no one, particularly @BubbaWallace should apologize for investigating this. Oh, and when you capitalize “Flag” in the middle of a sentence real Americans think your referring to ours not the Confederate one. Smh."

CNN correspondent Dianne Gallagher pointed out a few facts the president ignored. “So, @BubbaWallace didn’t report the noose, never even saw the noose. NASCAR President Steve Phelps informed Bubba about it, hours after it was found— shortly before telling the media in a statement. This was the “garage pull” NASCAR said it found in (only) the 43 garage," Gallagher tweeted.

In a NASCAR staff report, the organization said “NASCAR officials asked each track to sweep through respective garages … So across those 29 tracks and 1,684 garage stalls, we found only 11 total that had a pull-down rope tied in a knot and only one noose — the one discovered on Sunday in Bubba Wallace’s garage,” Phelps said...….
    ...........
Wallace, who has been more vocal about racial injustice recently, called the noose left in his garage a “despicable act of racism and hatred” that “serves as a painful reminder of how much further we have to go as a society and how persistent we must be in the fight against racism … As my mother told me today, 'They are just trying to scare you,'” Wallace said in a statement he shared on Twitter. “This will not break me, I will not give in nor will I back down. I will continue to proudly stand for what I believe in."

He also said in a follow-up tweet that he was "relieved" when the FBI investigation revealed that "this wasn't what we feared it was … I think we'll gladly take a little embarrassment over what the alternatives could have been," Wallace said.
    .......

    Monday, Jul 6, 2020 · 3:07:39 PM EDT · Lauren Floyd
Wallace responded to the president’s tweet Monday afternoon with a message for the next generation of racers. "Never let anybody tell you (you) can't do something! God put us all here for a reason," Wallace said. "Find that reason and be proud of it and work your tails off every day towards it! All the haters are doing is elevating your voice and platform to much greater heights."

Wallace ended his message by directly addressing Trump. "Love should come naturally as people are TAUGHT to hate," he said. "Even when it's HAtE from the POTUS.."

Kaepernick strikes deal with Disney to 'elevate Black and Brown directors, creators, storytellers'
    Laura Clawson

NFL teams have been strong in their commitment to keeping Colin Kaepernick off the field, but the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback continues to expand his influence and voice as a civil rights activist. Walt Disney announced a new deal with Kaepernick’s production company Monday morning, starting with an ESPN documentary on Kaepernick’s life. Former ESPN Jemele Hill will be involved in that project.

But the deal doesn’t stop there. It will “emphasize scripted and unscripted stories that deal with race, social injustice and the quest for equity, and work to showcase directors and producers of color,” Variety reports.
    ......
“I am excited to announce this historic partnership with Disney across all of its platforms to elevate Black and Brown directors, creators, storytellers, and producers, and to inspire the youth with compelling and authentic perspectives,” Kaepernick said in a statement.

Disney’s Bob Iger said Kaepernick has “a unique perspective on the intersection of sports, culture and race, which will undoubtedly create compelling stories that will educate, enlighten and entertain, and we look forward to working with him on this important collaboration.”

In a moment when the media industry is trying to catch up with the demand for culture that centers Black and brown stories and to reckon with racism in U.S. culture and in the media itself, Kaepernick, with the Disney platform, is positioned to be an even more powerful voice than he has already become.

Kaepernick was blackballed by the NFL after kneeling during the national anthem to protest racism and police brutality. But while he lost his first career because of the stand (or knee) he took, he’s gone on to become a more significant figure in U.S. culture as a result. That’s clearly not going to go away anytime soon.

Trump campaign's latest brilliant stroke: Vowing to protect South American statues
    Aldous J Pennyfarthing

No, not statues of Adolf Eichmann, you cheeky monkeys.

However, Donald Trump appears very concerned about ensuring that no “anarchists” or American heritage-haters tear down this statue:

Yup. That statue is in Brazil.

Also, it's nearly 100 feet tall, sits on a 26-foot-tall pedestal, is made of reinforced concrete, weighs in at a gaudy 635 metric tons, and graces the top of a 2,310-foot summit. So in this case the anarchists will have to book a flight to Brazil, dodge the coronavirus in a country that’s somehow done a worse job with mitigation than we have, climb the mountain with their statue-killing ropes and chains, and then drag this behemoth down like a phalanx of Lilliputians while taking special care not to get bitch-slapped by one of Jesus’ enormous stone hands.

Why do I feel like the Trump campaign isn’t being completely honest with us?

Then again, this ad isn’t for people who know things. It’s for people who are now preternaturally predisposed to believe Christ the Redeemer stands at the base of the reflecting pool on the National Mall, despite what the fake news might tell them. Hey, maybe Benjamin Franklin, who was president from 1788 to 1860 as far as any Trump voters know, sculpted it with his bare hands. Who’s to say? You definitely can’t take the word of anyone in the deep state.

So here’s the Trump campaign in a nutshell: He will protect foreign statues that no one could or ever would consider toppling from statue-hating Americans who are deeply concerned about equality and civil rights. But he won’t do shit about a killer plague sweeping the nation. Or not until the statue problem is solved, anyway.

Is Joe Biden this dedicated? Of course not! Only Donald Trump will protect our precious foreign statues!

This is the turning point, folks. I don’t see how Trump can possibly lose now. Don’t be angry at me. I’m just the messenger.
