    Grand Canyon trip recommendations?

Thanks, that's useful information for me too. My wife and I are planning a one-week stay in Flagstaff in September...looks like a fairly easy drive north to the Grand Canyon, south to Sedona, and east to Petrified Forest National Park. Meteor Crater is also close to Flagstaff apparently.

Site has become stale. Very few interesting threads.

I'm one of those weirdo Penn State fans who never hated Pitt. I mean, why? They had a great 7-year run with Cavanaugh and Marino slinging the rock and in that period played some memorable games against us...but other than that they've never remotely been a threat or a factor. Hell, I even...

Yup, NIL...the revolving-door portal...plus the bowl games have become a joke. Exhibit A: our recent losses to Arkansas and Mississippi which were basically decided not by those who played but rather by those who didn't. (God help me, I'm starting to agree with Lando on the topic of bowls.)...

Let it be acknowledged up front that the mods have a thankless job. Whatever they do (or don't do), somebody's gonna complain. That said, the reason I didn't move with Tom to his new board was the biased, confusing, and inconsistent regime of censorship that he as Mod-in-Chief had instituted...

    TCM Movie Marathon

My wife and I watched The Big Sleep tonight, and I was confused as hell...couldn't follow the plot at all. But Bogie and Bacall were classic...well worth the investment of two hours. Also, so many smolderingly hot chicks in that movie. I mean, Hollywood in those days showed that you don't need...

Remember Gregg Doyel, the giant douche from CBS sports

Agreed. The hallmarks of modern mainstream "journalism," very much to include sports media, are arrogance, dishonesty, hypocrisy, and an ingrained sense of entitlement. Moreover, experience shows that some males who make a big deal of their supposed enlightened mentality and "feminism" are...

Urban legend, Spin. Didn't happen. Here's the scene by the way. An all-time classic of cinema:

Maybe...but Messala's chariot had steel blades on its wheels...which could be why he was unbeaten entering the contest. To this day, 2000 years later, we cling to the sentimental idea that cheaters don't win. But the reality is they do win...a lot...at least until Karma catches up with (some...

Great choices, Spin. I recently watched the You-Tube video of Vin Scully's call of that Gibson home run. Great moment in baseball history! But if you're going back a couple thousand years, my pick is the shocking Judah Ben-Hur upset of the Roman bastard Messala in the Jerusalem chariot race...

    Caitlin Clarks NIL deals

Wow, those numbers are revealing. Some smart-aleck on Twitter yesterday said anyone protesting the paltry salaries of WNBA players should be forced to watch one of the league's games. To which some other smart-aleck replied that he'd rather sit on the TV and watch the couch.

    OT Just for fun discussion

To be clear, I did say "at his peak." For his first fight with Ali, Joe was at his peak, and on that single night in March 1971 I don't think he could have been beaten by any boxer ever. But that said, yes, when you look at the entirety of his career, it's hard to make a case for Joe being...

1: 1987...Penn State shocks favored Miami, then billed as one of the greatest college teams of all time, to win the national championship in an historic college football game. The highlight of my sports viewing life...unlikely to ever be surpassed. 2. 1976...Flyers beat Soviet Army hockey...

OT: Has anyone else been paying attention to auto insurance premiums?

OJ Simpson dead at age 76

Spin, actually most of the Black jury reportedly believed OJ was guilty but voted to acquit him as "payback." One juror member was photographed giving OJ the Black power salute after the verdict was announced. Another let the cat out of the bag in a recent interview. (Link below.) There's no...

OT: Has anyone else been paying attention to auto insurance premiums?

The last few years have been brutal for both car and medical insurance for reasons highlighted in this thread plus other factors too. At peak cost way back in the day, like 20 years ago, we paid $500 a month with three cars and three teens at a time on our policy. I can't even imagine what...

UConn-Purdue averaged 14.8 million viewers, fewer than women's title game for first time

Agreed...and that's a great analogy at the end! I started following the NBA as a kid in the 60s and was a big fan of the Bill Russell Celtics. Loved the game through the 80s and 90s: Bird...the Showtime Lakers...the Bad Boy Pistons...and the amazing run of MJ and the Bulls. I continued to...

UConn-Purdue averaged 14.8 million viewers, fewer than women's title game for first time

Those are fantastic numbers for the women's game, but I think it's a one-off. Caitlin Clark versus unbeaten South Carolina was a great storyline which won't be seen again soon. As for the men's game, I think a number of factors were in play as others have pointed out. As good as UConn is...

NAIA essentially bans trans athletes from women’s sports.

OK, let me do my part to have this thread locked, deleted, or moved: the issue at hand goes far beyond politics or political figures. Ultimately it goes to an argument...it could even be called a war...between two opposing camps of thought that in the end do not admit of compromise: one holding...

    UConn-Purdue halftime thoughts

Hurley publicly says stuff that don't usually come from the mouths of coaches, who typically speak in bland, vanilla language. After the game last night, for example, he boldly declared that UConn is going for a three-peat next year. And at least one Vegas book has already installed the...

    UConn-Purdue halftime thoughts

Yup, don't get me wrong: Edey is a great college player who had a great tournament and an excellent game last night. Those numbers, 37 and 10, are impressive no matter how you cut the cake. The dude held up his end of the bargain. But none of that conflicts with my above point. I do think...
