I test drove a VW ID.4 this weekend

Just a point of clarification on the six vs seven hour trip: 6 hours in a gas car assumes no stops along the way. When I used to drive more (and was younger and didn’t have kids) 6 hours nonstop was no problem. These days, on a six hour trip I’d make at least one stop to stretch my legs, grab...

I test drove a VW ID.4 this weekend

This isn’t that surprising to me. The article hits on one item that I expect is the biggest cause: these people bought in early before a lot of issues were worked through (battery cooling for example). Being an early adopter comes with risk. The other issue as I understand it, is CA has an...

I test drove a VW ID.4 this weekend

I agree with most of that. I think for the most part, people who buy an EV also have a garage with an "ICE" car for longer trips and save the EV for commuting, trips around town, etc. In theory, there should be less wear and tear maintenance like oil changes, mechanical break down, etc. to...

I test drove a VW ID.4 this weekend

First off, you're likely correct that local travel is where the electric vehicle (EV) will be best suited. An EV with a stated 300 mile range gets 300 miles of range only in the most ideal situation (75 degree temp, low wind, carrying minimal weight, going a normal speed, using regenerative...

I test drove a VW ID.4 this weekend

Basically, a Tesla is able to charge at any charging station (Tesla or non-Tesla branded charging station). A non-Tesla cannot charge at a Tesla “Supercharger station”. There are some Tesla branded non-Supercharger locations (destination chargers) that can be accessed by non-Tesla vehicles if...

Question for wood re-finisher experts out there - outdoor live edge table...

I’ve never used wax on outside furniture but I’d have two initial concerns: 1. There won’t be any uv protection so if sun exposure is a problem for you, wax won’t be a solution. 2. I’d expect the wax to break down pretty quickly in the elements, so at a minimum, I’d plan on reapplying...

Question for wood re-finisher experts out there - outdoor live edge table...

This is what I’ve done. A couple coats of pure tung, which I let cure, then Man o war spar varnish (you might need to have it shipped via amazon or rockler though). In high humidity though, you may need to let it cure for quite a while. Pure tung might never cure... Good luck.

Advice on remodeling our kitchen......... Feel free to tell me your experiences, good and/or bad.

Yep, I hear you there. Figured I’d throw it out there since most people assume it’s beyond their reach.

Advice on remodeling our kitchen......... Feel free to tell me your experiences, good and/or bad.

If you have the tools and the time, you could consider building your own cabinets. It sounds daunting, but in the end, it’s just building boxes.

AKB: Microsoft Surface Go2 vs iPad Pro

I can’t comment on iPad vs Surface as I’m pretty well integrated into the Apple ecosystem, so only have experience with the iPad. For your intended uses though, I’d take a hard look at the latest generation iPad Air and save a few $s compared to the Pro. I’ve found the Air perfect for me and...

OT: Getting rid of old computers

When I’ve gotten rid of old computers, I’ve always removed the hard drive and held onto it. I have Two reasons for doing so: 1. Any personal information remains with the hard drive (and me). This is the primary reason for me. 2. If I discover later that I need to retrieve something, I can...

OT. Need some info on Topsail Beach, NC

I was going to say something similar. My 6 year old was fine this past summer in Duck. We set up near lifeguards and always tried to stay within line of sight while swimming. I wouldn’t let him swim in the ocean without me regardless of where it is.

    OT: USPS delays

Yes. I had two special order tools sent from Ohio via USPS (one for me, one a gift). One of the packages shipped on 11/30 and I received it yesterday. The other was a few days faster but still nuts coming from Ohio to PA. Both took circuitous routes as I followed the shipping updates. At...

Way OT: What is everyones go to power Tool brand?

The Disston I have is some sort of relic from the distant past that I bought at a garage sale. I need a rip saw and it was filed sharp with rip teeth. I cleaned some rust off and it cuts beautifully. I am sure any of the saws you are looking at are outstanding, but in this, I got a lifetime...

Way OT: What is everyones go to power Tool brand?

I had a near kickback on a table saw 2 weeks ago. I was ripping a walnut board and it stopped pushing through the cut. As soon as I felt it bind, I shut the saw off with my knee (so I could hold onto the board with both hands). As it turned out, the board must have been under a lot of tension...

Way OT: What is everyones go to power Tool brand?

I watch Perkins Brothers Builders on Youtube. They have a channel devoted to building homes, tips, tricks, tools, etc. One of the brothers lost multiple fingers in a jointer accident earlier this year. Awful stuff.

Way OT: What is everyones go to power Tool brand?

The other consideration that someone mentioned earlier in regard to their basement shop is how Festool designs tools with dust collection as a primary design consideration. This can be a huge deal for a contractor that needs to work in a finished home vs a framer who can blow dust wherever...

Way OT: What is everyones go to power Tool brand?

I believe the youtube video below is the best I've ever seen in terms of flattening a board using a hand plane. It gives you a great sense of the geometry of planing a surface. Two other keys to flattening lumber that I've found: 1. Setup of the plane is crucial. If you don't have your...

Way OT: What is everyones go to power Tool brand?

I would really like to try the Mafell Erika pull - push saw as I believe it would be a perfect solution for my needs. However it is damn expensive and there’s no dealer network to give it a test spin or call if there an issue. Maybe some day...
