OT: Best Single Volume History of WW II?

I just finished reading 'The Story of World War II' by Donald L. Miller and cannot recommend it more highly. A comprehensive history that explores the war from the highest levels of leadership to the experience of the men who were fighting it to the millions of innocents who suffered and died...

    Bowl advice

Everyone, Hoping some experienced bowl travelers can offer advice on travel, tix, etc. for the Cotton Bowl. I go to a lot of games around the country but haven't been to a Penn State bowl trip since the 1998 Cap One against Florida, so I'm a total novice on this. I am thinking about...

    Coal Region Football in Trouble

These are certainly tough times for football, but if I may, I'd like to share one recent success story. My son is a sophomore at Springfield (Montco) just outside of Philly. Four years ago, the administration had to cancel the football season after just one game because the team was down to 18...

    Matt Parker?

Hey all, not sure how old this news is, but I had just heard that Matt Parker is no longer with the team and also that he has quit wrestling. Just wondering if anyone knows the story here.

    WTF happened to Western PA?

I work in the Lehigh Valley (Bethlehem, specifically) and recently was working on a project that looked at the economic revival of Bethlehem, and more specifically South Bethlehem. This year marks 20 years since the old Beth Steel plant finally shut down, and as you might imagine, there have...

    Where are the Bluefish?

I was just down in Ocean City earlier this week and went out to Corson's Inlet to fish from shore a couple of days. In two days, I caught all of two flounder. Saw one guy catch a small shark. Beyond that, in maybe 7 hours fishing, saw barely anyone catching anything. That being said, still...

Since it's July 4th, best American sports victories? (individual or team)

Don't think I've ever celebrated a moment as much as this one. Yeah it was only a group-stage game but wow what a moment.

fc OT Baltimere boys, whats going on with the Inner Harbor? it went into receivership

I used to live in Federal Hill, just a few blocks from the Inner Harbor. Long story short, as the surrounding neighborhoods (Fed Hill, Fells Point, Canton, Locust Point, etc.) took off, they became much more desirable places to be than the Inner Harbor, which just became a tourist trap with big...

The string has been broken, my daughter has become a panther

First, congrats to your daughter. As someone who works in the industry I have heard a lot of great things about Pitt in recent years. As to the question of scholarship money, and why Pitt seems able to give more, it's likely tied to the fact that Pitt's endowment is $4.2 billion for a total...

The lack of understanding of the value of the arts & sciences never ceases to amaze.

Looking for a Restaurant in Philly near the Convention Center.

You would be only a few blocks from Dandelion, which is one of Stephen Starr's restaurants. It's a British-themed "pub" but feels more like a restaurant. Food is excellent. For something more casual but still good, there's a great little pub nearby called Good Dog Bar. And if you're a beer...

OT: Fishing spots around Big Boulder Lake?

Hey all, I am with the family at Big Boulder in the Poconos for the weekend. I am hoping to get in a couple of hours of fishing in between skiing, etc. From the looks of things, it appears that there is no shore/dock access at Big Boulder. I am just wondering if anyone familiar with the area...

OT: Advice for a beginner fly fisherman

Gents -- thanks so much for all of your replies and advice. I am hoping to head to the Loch Alsh Reservoir tomorrow to get some casts in. I'll throw out some minnows or corn on my traditional gear while I try working on casting with the new fly gear. There may not be any trout left but there are...

OT: Advice for a beginner fly fisherman

Hey all, I have been fishing for years, mostly for bass, but this Christmas my dad got me a decent starter fly kit and I'd like to give this a shot. I live right near the Wissahickon, right outside of Philly, so finding a place won't be an issue. My bigger concern obviously is just figuring...

    Points scored first 4 games..1994 vs 2018...

Different eras, so it's impossible to compare them. For its time, that '94 offense was incredible. This current bunch is fun to watch but as talented as they are, the one piece from '94 that I really wish we had this year was a Bobby Engram. I don't recall him dropping a pass at all in '94.

OT: Getting rid of a yellowjacket nest

Update: I used the gasoline method. Poured maybe half a glass worth into the hole using a short length of hose so I didn't need to get close. Applied this late in the evening on a cloudy day. I didn't set it on fire, just let the gas sit in there. Checked it the morning, no activity at all...

OT: Getting rid of a yellowjacket nest

No doubt. After the first attack, I went inside to get some meds. Went out maybe 5 minutes later, and I was nowhere near the nest, and they came after me again. They kept attacking the lawnmower until it was dark.

OT: Getting rid of a yellowjacket nest

Hey all, last night I had the pleasure of running into an in-ground yellowjacket nest while mowing my lawn. I got stung about 5-7 times before I even knew what was happening. This morning I was able to locate the general location of the nest, right under a tree and in my lawn. The problem I...
