"You want to make an American Pale Lager by using a craft beer? Pour a shot of a strong malty craft beer into a 10 oz glass of water and poof! you've got a Coors."

Funny, and here I thought you have to drink a couple of IPAs then piss in a Coors Light Can.

The information is out there.

You really are the gift the keeps on giving! I guess you missed 5 posts ago when I said:

I can't believe you walked right in to that one... I really am 5 steps ahead of you. I'm actually starting to feel bad for you.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, I'm still waiting to hear why such trivial news, if true, would be considered FUN (or FUNNY). Also how the fact that something was a secret but now is not would be at all relevant to the discussion. I can't wait to see how you avoid it in your next post!

P.S. Just because someone uses a lawyer analogy, doesn't mean they are a lawyer. So the ambulance chaser insult was not only lame, it was a pretty poor assumption on your part.

That took you TWO edits?!?!?!

So where in your copy and paste from Wikipedia (rock solid source, btw) does it prove your point.... "Initially, it was kept a secret for fear of turning off their customers and also possibly made to look like that they were not telling the truth in their commercials." Because it's not there. All your reference proves is something that isn't under dispute, and I even posted about their use of contract brewing before you started making yourself look like an idiot. To go back to the courtroom analogy you are so fond of, you just spent the entire trial trying to prove your client, on trial for grand theft auto, is not guilty of murder. Seriously, you can't be this dumb... please tell me you are doing some sort of "dumb-guy" schtick.

Next? How about previous... I'm still waiting for you to address why such trivial news, if true, would be considered FUN (or FUNNY). Also how the fact that something was a secret but now is not would be at all relevant to the discussion. I also noticed you ignored being called out on your bad assumption that I am a lawyer, and for you being called out on telling me to use google five posts after I told you I used google... Aren't you at least going to try to defend yourself? Maybe you could try posting another youtube link that nobody will click!

How exactly did you embarrass me by posting content from Wikipedia that doesn't prove your point? You've completely given up on trying to prove your point, and devolved entirely into name calling. Stop deflecting, stop accusing me of your behaviors, man up and go back to my last post and try to address my on topic questions, or slink away with your tail between your legs.

Edit - Questions you keep dodging added for your convenience:

I'd like to thank you again on behalf of the board for providing us with such comic relief. I really do look forward to your next nonsensical post. I can't wait to see how you yet again avoid actually engaging in any sort of intelligent debate, yet just exclaim how you "won". Will it be a youtube link, an outdated insult, or another picture? Only time will tell! You would think that someone who is bragging so much about how they embarrassed me would be able to simply articulate how exactly they did it. If you'd like to grow up and engage in an actual on topic discussion, here are the questions you've been avoiding like the plague:

I just finished reading a book called "The Audacity of Hops" that detailed the rise of the craft beer movement.

Sam Adams using contract brewing methods was NOT a huge secret, and it was actually pretty standard for many other craft brewers of the day. Think: Pete's Wicked Ale. In fact, not only was it NOT a secret, it was recommended as a strategy by a famous consultant to the craft industry who had to face the most daunting aspect of brewing: it is a highly capital intensive operation, with high margins, relatively low marginal and variable costs but HUGE fixed costs. Brewing equipment is not cheap (which is why so many startups head to auction for their equipment).

I've been drinking crafts/micro-brews ever since I stumbled into Zeno's for the first time. I knew Sam was based out of Boston, but had been brewed in PA (Pittsburgh and Scranton) for decades. Didn't matter - they still brewed good beer. Its the recipe, the process and the ingredients that matter. It certainly was no secret where they actually made their beer. Many of the other craft brewerys resented contract brewing and pushed for labeling that said where the beer was made. If Sam's competitors knew, you better believe their customers did too.

The Lion Brewery and F.X. Matt are some of the more well known contract brewers out there.

That can't be right.... this agrees with me! I mean, how can we trust your published source, when TheGLOV had a private conversation with a guy... and a Wikipedia page that doesn't prove his point?

Surely he will be back to gloat that your post somehow proves him right, and me an imbecile. I can't wait to see him make an a$$ out of himself again!

Pretending that you didn't get completely destroyed in this thread, doesn't make it reality. You can still try to redeem yourself if you simply stop dodging questions, or simply admit you were wrong and apologize for resorting to childish name calling... EVERYONE else already knows you are wrong... why don't you?

I have no idea what you mean by "it was a secret initially" because that's clearly not right, because of what I just said in my earlier post.

There was a pretty famous consultant to the craft brewing industry, who was advising early 90's breweries who couldn't afford the initial start-up costs to turn to contract brewing as a possible solution. There were DOZENS of breweries besides Sam Adams using this strategy including Pete's Wicked. It kept a few PA brewers like F.X. Matt and Straub/The Lion going strong. Considering this consultant was well known, and many brewers were using this strategy, and many other craft brewers were pushing for labeling saying where the beer was brewed, and many consumers were aware of all of this, I'm not sure why this can be considered a "big secret" - I was drinking Sam Adams back in the early 90's and even back then I knew it was actually a PA brewed beer.

If this was some kind of "big secret" then its probably the second worst secret of all time. The first being the cover-up by Schultz, Paterno, Curley and 45 other people.

Look.

The slop, Sam Adams was initially brewed in Pittsburgh by Iron Crappy.

Well, you are partly correct, it was initially "contract" brewed in Pittsburgh. Obviously it was all initially brewed near Boston. BUT... this was NEVER in dispute. TheGLOV is trying to argue that it was a big secret, but has no basis other than a Wikipedia page that doesn't mention it being a secret, and a private conversation that no one can verify. Meanwhile google searches can not verify his claim, and others have chimed in with sources disputing his claim.

What do you think you have a point for... providing a Wikipedia link that doesn't prove your point that the contract brewing was initially a secret? Please elaborate. I want to see how you avoid even this simple question with more nonsense, insults, and random emoticons.

You are obviously not a college graduate... possibly not even high school... based on your lack of logic, poor spelling/grammar, and inability to follow a simple discussion like a normal adult. The question is... why did you have to choose my alma mater to be a fan of? Why don't you go join the Pitt crowd were you belong?

Not a secret either:
Has the Perception of Contract Brewing Changed?

Rosemarie Certo, owner of Dock Street Brewing Company, also shared her experiences with contract brewing when Dock Street was first founded in the 1980s. "We started in 1985, a year before Sam Adams. At that time the craft movement was non-existent," says Certo. "After speaking with Jim Koch who was contracting at FX Matt in Utica, NY, we thought we'd move production up there." That move seemed to have worked for Dock Street. By contract brewing, Dock Street was able to grow large enough to be acquired in the mid-1990s.

I drank a lot of Dock Street beers in the early 90's. I visited their brew pub often, but I knew their bottled beers were not made in Philadelphia. Seems like every brewery knew about Jim Koch's strategic decision, even small start-ups like Dock Street. Call me crazy, but if this was such a big secret, why did Jim openly share his strategy with his competition??

LOTS of companies contract brew. Some of the contract brew is bad, some of it is very good. It all depends on the quality of the ingredients.

Here's some history around Joseph Owades: Five Pivotal Moments in the History of New York State Craft Beer

To get around the startup costs of a New York City brewery, Owades suggested contract brewing: renting the excess capacity and labor of an existing brewery to craft a particular brand.

Owades connected Reich with the F.X. Matt Brewing Co. in Utica; and in October 1982, 7,000 cases of a lager Reich called New Amsterdam Amber Beer began hitting the streets. Reich's Old New York Brewing Co., which lasted into the late 1980s, had brought craft beer to the nation's largest city and had spawned the idea of contract brewing (though he had never let go of the idea of starting a physical brewery).

This idea, and this beer company PRE-DATES Samuel Adams. It was no secret, it was an OPEN and RECOGNIZED strategy. I don't understand what this debate is even about?

1) Contract Brewing was not a secret, it was not a Jim Kock idea. He was merely the most successful craft brewery that relied on this strategy, and it may have helped him grow so fast.
2) There are bad beers made using Contract Brewing, and there are good beers (Pretty Things) made using Contract Brewing. (Frankly, I think Sam beers fall somewhere in between.)
3) Does it even matter?? If the beer tastes good, and the marketing is not misleading - I don't care.

Joseph Owades
Later, Owades formed the Center for Brewing Studies, where he provided consulting services to many micro- and mid-sized brewers and taught annual seminars.

Among his consulting clients were New Amsterdam Brewing in New York; Rheingold Brewing, where he re-created the original Rheingold lager.

SAM ADAMS: BREWER. PATRIOT. PHONY?

F.X. Matt (makers of Saranac) is a well-known contract brewer that has handled the dirty work for many smaller breweries in the Northeast.

So yeah…I get it. The Boston Beer Company certainly relied on contract brewers for far longer than is reasonable for a self-proclaimed craft brewery. And sure, Jim Koch is clearly more of a marketing genius than a true master brewer. And the Company has rolled out some truly horrendous concoctions in the name of profit (Hardcore Cider, Twisted Tea, Cranberry Lambic, Sam Light, etc.).

Not sure why I am entering this pissing war, but Glov is so wrong he looks so pathetic!
Sam Adams being brewed in Pittsburgh was NEVER EVER a secret. LOL.

Also, I will say this about Bud, and it comes straight from the mouth of one of the most respected craft brewers around ...
What Budweiser does is actually pretty incredible. The fact that they can make so much consistently tasting beverage is nothing short of amazing. Their quality control is out of this world.

Speaking of quality control, that is the biggest issue with real craft brewers - batch to batch consistency.
Try an Alpine Nelson or Duet brewed at Alpine, then try the Nelson/Duet that is being contract brewed at Green Flash and now being distributed across the US - there is no comparison. Here is hoping Green Flash gets the recipe down, because I am so looking forward to being able to source Alpine in Michigan.

In 88 or 89 I think my buddy and I went to SA outside Boston. Got the tour from Jim Koch himself, and as we were enjoying the complimentary post-tour pint, Jim brings out a six pack of some beer that was not released yet, and starts explaining all the details of this new beer. My buddy and I reach into the six pack, pull out a bottle each, and crack them open. The look on Koch's face was priceless, as he said, "um, those were not meant to be opened" then laughed and said, "well as long as they are, hand one over to me"

So anyway, here are a few of my favorites:
Alpine Nelson and Duet
RRBC Pliny the Elder - drink this whenever I can find it (it's available at Falling Rock in Denver btw, and I think a philly area bar has it too)
Southern Tier Live
Bell's Two Hearted, Amber, Brown Ale,Oberon
Victory Prima Pils
Short's Soft Parade, Bellaire Brown, Huma Lupa Licious
Founder's All Day IPA
Pizza Port Swami's
Atwater Dirty Blonde
Bear Republic Racer 5

Yes, because I am laughing at you so hard I am crying!

I told you couldn't even articulate why you think you have a point, and would avoid the question with more nonsense. I am proud of you for laying off the random emoticons, that had to be really tough for you!

How many people telling you that you are wrong will it take for you to wake up? There are at least 3 now, and none supporting you.

I'll ask AGAIN... how did you prove you point that the contract brewing was initially a secret? This should be easy for you to answer, yet you will dodge. All you have is an alleged private conversation. Others have chimed in to dispute your point. No one agrees with your point, even the Wikipedia page you linked.

So I went back to reread, and guess what... I still crush you. Now it's your turn, go back and reread, relive your embarrassment, and when you are done.... reply, and highlight in the exchange (copied directly from the thread) where you proved your point. (Note: I cut out MANY of the questions you dodged along the way, and won't highlight your spelling/grammar errors)

TheGLOV: "Initially, it was kept a secret for fear of turning off their customers and also possibly made to look like that they were not telling the truth in their commercials."
Pandaczar12: "Link? I did a quick google search and could not turn up any information to support your claim. Assuming you are correct, explain how exactly it IS fun. The plan for D-Day WAS also a secret initially, and it is also equally irrelevant to this topic."
TheGLOV:That is a fact. -Pnnylion also knew of it.
Pandaczar12: Well that clears it up, you make a very convincing argument, completely backed up by linked facts and logic. Who can argue with "well one other guy agrees with me"? Surely you could provide a plethora of links as requested to back up your claim, but don't feel the need to since that one other guy agrees with you."
TheGLOV: "^^Seeing is how Joseph Piccirilli past owner of Iron City Brewery) in a private conversation, told me he that he had the Sam Adams contract and to keep it a secret probably means nothing to such a man like you: so why bother."
Pandaczar12: "It not only means nothing to me, it means nothing to absolutely everyone BUT you. Funny that the only supporting information you can provide is a private conversation."
TheGLOV: I've satisfied it.
Note: at this point you really start to get off topic to avoid talking about your non-existent point, and start to devolve into childish Insults. I keep asking you to provide evidence of your point, and generally make you look dumber with every post.
TheGLOV: "The information is out there. "Google" is your friend. You must have missed that on an earlier post you ambulance chaser!!"
Pandaczar12:I guess you missed 5 posts ago when I said: Link? I did a quick google search and could not turn up any information to support your claim. P.S. Just because someone uses a lawyer analogy, doesn't mean they are a lawyer.
TheGLOV: "Iron City brand of beer."
Pandaczar12: "
So where in your copy and paste from Wikipedia (rock solid source, btw) does it prove your point.... "Initially, it was kept a secret for fear of turning off their customers and also possibly made to look like that they were not telling the truth in their commercials." Because it's not there. All your reference proves is something that isn't under dispute, and I even posted about their use of contract brewing before you started making yourself look like an idiot."
TheGLOV: "^^Ha-ha! I embarrass your a$$ and that is all you got?"
Pandaczar12: "
How exactly did you embarrass me by posting content from Wikipedia that doesn't prove your point?"
TheGLOV:
Failed attempt at an insult
Pandaczar12: So where in your copy and paste from Wikipedia (rock solid source, btw) does it prove your point.... jjsocrates: "Sam Adams using contract brewing methods was NOT a huge secret...."
TheGLOV: Multiple failed attempts to insult
jjsocrates: "I have no idea what you mean by "it was a secret initially" because that's clearly not right, because of what I just said in my earlier post."
jjsocrates: "Contract Brewing was not a secret, it was not a Jim Koch idea"
ClarkstonMark: "Not sure why I am entering this pissing war, but Glov is so wrong he looks so pathetic! Sam Adams being brewed in Pittsburgh was NEVER EVER a secret. LOL."
TheGLOV: "I proved my point."

I know it's hard for you to accept but try.
Given your insistance on sticking to a narrative that has been shown to be false once you present evidence and interviews with a wider range of experts, I have to ask - do you work for ESPN?

You are so predictable, thanks for proving me right.

Oh... so you still think you were right about:

It IS fun and it WAS a secret initially.

How comes no one else seems to think you are correct? How comes you can't seem to do something so simple as copy and paste the information that proves you right? If you really are right... seems like you'd want to prove it since nobody believes you.
