The Lions had 45:27. I wondered if it was a record.

Not sure if there is a more current update but I found this from a Nov 2017 article.

“Although the NCAA doesn't officially keep track of single-game time of possession records, Michigan State's TOP of 47:50 is believed to be an FBS record. Air Force had previous record of 45:14 set in 2015.”

It was a freak game where PSU was able to play ball control and Iowa was 3 and out virtually the entire game. Iowa D did what it was designed to do, prevent the big play, but couldn't get off the field because PSU got 1st downs and could convert those 4th and short with the Tush Push.

TOP is an unusual statistic that at times renders it both meaningful and meaningless. Against a quick scoring offense that’s humming along it really doesn’t matter. Against a slow plodding offense it’s the story of the game.

Yeppers. Ka-Jana and team averaged about five plays per drive. TOP was way outta wack. And the D actually got tired and gave up a few more scores than normal. Rose Bowl against Oregon a good example. Cost us a natty.

Oregon game was not the cause. If you blame we a game, it was in Bloomington, but there was other issues at play that cost us a title.
