department. According to the gambling intermediary who has now flipped, and an ESPN source, Mickelson gambled and laundered almost $3,000,000. link

Looks like Phil might really push the phrase "he's going to a Federal Country Club for 18-24 months."

Yikes!

I wonder long this thread would get were the name Tiger Woods instead of Phil Mickelson. Oh, and how nasty would it get?
Let's get a little "holier than thou," inject race into a thread that didn't even come close to making it the topic and bring a big batch of "POLITICALLY CORRECT" Kool Aid to the party! You must suck as a drinking/golf/fishing buddy.

Who injected race into this thread? Where's the politically correct stuff you're mentioning? Do you realize that EPC is making fun of the fact that there are people on this board who bash Woods at every opportunity and that these threads go on forever? There are people on this board who are obsessed with Tiger Woods, there's no other way to put it. Why, I have no idea, I suspect EPC doesn't either.

His man boobs won't be quite the draw in the Country Club joint he'll go to. Now if he had to do hard time, they'd be selling him for packs of cigarettes

And the sheer delight would be more than palpable.
I think people really hammer Tiger (race aside for a moment) because he seemed like such a surly jerk - as opposed to Phil who always has that goofy smile going.

I loved when Tiger was at the top but still thought he was a jackass. Some people are just as over the top figuratively fellating the guy as those who hate on him.

Then you learn that seemingly their personalities are totally different in private with Tiger being well-liked and Phil generally disliked.

I think many of Tiger's issues with women arose because he was a total nerd (college nickname, Urkel) turned into a Demigod. I had a few friends who were late bloomers who didn't handle female attention well when they started getting it in droves. They couldn't help themselves - like a kid denied alcohol who goes to college and turns into John Blutarski.

Always amused me how people will defend Phil like crazy on here when his nickname amongst the tour players is FIGJAM

Both Phil and Tiger have proven themselves to be assholes, each in their own way...that doesn't take anything away from either player on the course though as they are still two of maybe 4 golfers I would actually schedule my TV viewing around and golf is a lot more fun when those two are playing well and in the tourney

I was at Augusta 4 or 5 years & heard about how disliked Phil was by people at Augusta. Also heard that he & his wife had a big time gambling problems, so I am not surprised.

I believe the story mentions that Mickelson is not under investigation, and did not commit a crime. The money was given to someone who laundered it. No crime.

and yet he has the nerve to be constantly bitching about paying taxes.
Do you work for the media?

Not to quibble with your post but thought a little accuracy and context to your comment:

I think he bitched once and immediately took it back. And he was not bitching about paying taxes, he was bitching about the fact that he gets taxed at a 50% rate for earned income while passive income is taxed at a much lower rate. So he was complaining about the fact that he was out working for his money and others were paying less for sitting on their butts.

Uh.....well.....
Actually.......if it was his money that was being scrubbed, it is a crime - and he's "it".
I don't know how likely it is that he did/didn't do it, or if he will or won't be convicted.
But if it was his money, and it was being scrubbed, assuming he was not "blissfully and utterly unaware", he can very well end up in the slammer.

Going to be interesting to see what/if anything happens.... currently everyone is saying Phil is NOT under investigation for any wrong doing....now is that just the fed's being the fed's and taking their time and haven't gotten to phil in this whole thing yet or are they basically done the invesitgation and truly mean Phil has done no wrong....only time will tell

Looks like somebody doesn't like truth:)

Well, that's what took down Eliot Spitzer. FIFA got nailed on it. If he purposely was trying to hide laundering money for gambling (which is illegal) he going to be in some trouble. If he was using a middle guy to purposely avoid money laundering discovery, that is a federal offense too. If he funneled $3m to a middle man for the purposes of doing illegal gambling, he broke the law. now, money talks, perhaps he'll autograph a golf glove and give it to the DA. But he should be prosecuted, just like we would be.

Can't stand Phil. Two different interactions with him one of them being business. Dude is a straight a** hat. FIGJAM definately fits.

Actually.........

Depending on what State he is in it may be close to that figure (though I expect he domiciles in FLA, so no state income tax).

But even in FLA, his Federal rate is probably 40%......and even if the 50% is a bit of hyperbole, the point remains - and Phil IS absolutely right on this end:

Plenty of guys on Wall Street, raking in $MILLIONS$ running hedge funds and the like.......many of them are paying lower marginal tax rates than schoolteachers and sanitation workers.
That's the advantage to owning enough politicians to get YOUR loopholes into the tax code - i.e., you don't have to BREAK the law.....not when you have access to WRITE the law.

Now, I'm not gonna' cry for Phil......I imagine he's more than able to pay the mortgage.....but I am sure it has to be frustrating to run with that crowd - and see the "other assholes" raking in piles of cash, and only paying a small fraction of the tax that he does.

Tempest in a tea pot. The crowd loves Phil. Tiger is a cheating, has been, and not relevant to the discussion. Phil skates regardless.

He lived in CA. His comments were made when CA raised taxes and his golfing buddies in FL pay zero in state income taxes. IIRC, CA pays 13.3% over 1 m. If you add state and fed, that gets you to the 50% number not including sales, property, and other misc taxes.

Wait please, let's straighten things out -- Phil has a domicile in CA and pays a total accumulated tax bill of 61%, not FL which does not have a personal income tax on earnings.

Gambling is not illegal in the US, Powerball, MegaMillion, Numbers -- daily 3 or 4, Casinos, Poker tour, Internet poker and casino games in Vegas and NJ (with GPS identification of IP addresses) Internet sports gaming with Deposit Accounts and Fantasy Sports -- all legal. Worldwide, sports gaming alone is a $140+B industry. Check the US Senate Banking Law of 1996 and 2006 for additional info, why the US has its head in the sand on this one with a corporate income tax of 35% is stupid.

There is so much more on this topic, get back to me if you would like.

Pretty certain he meant money laundering is illegal, not gambling. Though to use the term "gambling is not illegal in the US", is not accurate. Gambling is regulated at the state/local level, similar to alcohol regulations, speed limits, etc.
