got it right. The goal is getting players drafted!!! I "never" liked him, but he is telling the truth. Forget the "fake purpose" of College Sports, get an "education" really ?? Win a "National Championship" for your "alma mater" ???? Really?
Maybe, if more statements like these are made, maybe, just maybe, the NFL and NBA will create REAL minor leagues for these guys. Maybe, just maybe "someone" at a University will "think" about the purpose of a "University", never mind :)

Beginning to develop an appreciation for guys like Calipari. There is something to be said for not being a hypocrite even if the truth told is unpalatable.

Unfortunately no one will do anything. The NFL and NBA aren't killing a free, extensive minor league system. And the people who run out universities are the biggest hypocrites of all. Even those whose programs lose money are afraid to cut them because they don't want to confront the masses armed with tar and pitchforks.

Big difference between hoops where a player can go pro after 1 year with 12 credits+ And not anywhere near getting a degree! Football is 3 years minimum of classes complete with normal "student athlete" progression in course work.
Calipari has the system beat and doesn't care about degree work by recruiting OADs. He makes a mockery of Penn State, ND, Northwestern, etc. He coaches a D league team basically.

Really? Would you care to elaborate? You might be surprised just how little course work a football player needs to complete in three years to remain eligible.

Disagree Dawg. College athletes should be students. FWIW basketball does have a minor league (CBA). And basketball is much worse than football at graduating players. No one and done in football.

Besides, very few college athletes make a career out of professional sports.

Would love to see a true "study" on the "educational" results for College BB and Football? In short, Did not make the pros? well, what are you doing (career) ? Early leavers and "graduates".

If you go to Kentucky to play basketball the stats say that you have a good chance of getting drafted or graduating if you ride out your time in school.

Wisconsin puts much, much less players in the draft and those who do stay graduate at a very low rate.

It's all just entertainment, anyway. Nothing to get worked up over.

Agreed. I don't expect Penn State men's basketball to ever be so "entertaining".

I hope you are right.
Chambers is putting good teams together; they are close. Have to learn to win. As far as academically, I am very proud of our men's and women's BB players; they graduate. That is job ONE!

NCAA basketball is what it is. Once they went to one-and-done, it changed forever. Calipari has just managed to embrace the new philosophy better than anybody else, for better or worse.

As with everything in society these days, it is all about the Benjamins!
  1. NFL and NBA aren't going to do anything since they are getting a FREE minor league system to evaluate the talent.
  2. NCAA isn't going to do anything since they are making huge salaries for doing basically nothing and getting free tickets to all of the big games (sounds like our BOTs).
  3. Universities aren't going to do anything since they (at least the big schools) are bringing huge amounts of cash to the school.

Right on. Did you see where LSU is pimping the heck out of the nation's #1 recruit, Ben Simmons, on billboards and other media resources to sell ticket packages?

The schools are making money from these star players.

College coaches leave teams and recruits high and dry when the opportunity comes along to do "what's best for their family" (aka more money).

Heck yeah these kids want to get drafted so that they and their families can get their piece of the pie. It's a business.

  • There are approximately 4500 Division 1 Men's basketball players
  • The NBA drafts approximately 60 per year
  • Many that play in the NBA only do so for a few years
I realize that you CAN'T stop players from attending college with the primary goal of reaching the NBA but you CAN require student athletes to meet the same academic requirements as other students.

Yeah, but the focus is always on the top guns, and for the most part they are different now.

All the parties involved, the college institutions, their 'governing bodies', the media, and government, and in the case of basketball and football the related professional businesses are either in either an orchestrated conspiracy or coincidental disinterest that allows no action against situations in college sports that conflict with the guiding principles of 'student athletes'.

Rather than getting grief and lack of support, renegades like Calipari are left to make a mockery of college sports.
At the same time, those that succeed doing it the right way are left on their own to do so. I feel we're on the way to the latter.
