For all of you that have helped me through the past ten weeks, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH.

I've been a strong supporter of GABR (Guardian Angel Basset Rescue, Dwight, IL) for many years. This organization has rescued over 4,000 bassets since it's inception in 1997. I was fortunate to have been given a little girl I named Bailey on 8/27/2000.

As I considered a new dog to follow (never replace, but follow) Bailey, I considered several wonderful dogs that had been brought into the rescue and needed forever homes. But when I found out there were puppies, I thought it was a now-or-never opportunity. We get very few puppies into the rescue and I was deathly afraid they'd say "ILLINOISLION, you've had your chance.....it's someone else's turn". But fortunately my loyalty over the years was recognized and the fact Bailey lived to 14 1/2 showed I did something right.....or at least not too much wrong.

Went through the application process when the puppies were five weeks old and got the good news two long weeks later. Waiting for tomorrow for the last three weeks has been hard.....trying to remember how to take care of a puppy, well, I guess I'll be having to remember that beginning tomorrow afternoon.

Six puppies, all named after "Happy Days" characters. I'm getting the runt of the litter, named Fonzie. I'm sticking with that name.

I've just recently learned details that have, well, do YOU believe in DESTINY:

- someone turned the mom and dad into our rescue on 2/13.....the day Bailey got sick.
- mom's named Jess.....my nephew in Texas married a Jess last July.
- dad's named Tucker.....my 40 year best friend/golfing buddy in Newport Beach, CA, his last name is Tucker.
- the puppies were born on 2/16.....the day I said goodbye to Bailey as the cremation service came for her.

Somewhere, somehow, someone's watching out for me. I've been blessed!

The other five adopting families will all join me at the GABR property tomorrow at 11AM to meet our new puppies, Jess, Foster Mom Sue, members of the Adoption Committee and other volunteers. It's a big day for everyone!

If you go to the GABR FACEBOOK page there should be a pic of the entire litter at seven weeks, Fonzie is upper left. If you scroll down, you'll come to pics of the puppies when they are younger.

Sorry for the long-windedness.....but to all of you who are pet lovers and / or pet owners, well, this one's for you, too! :)

Great news and good luck with your new boy! Dogs are a great part of life. We have 3 Jack Russell terriers and we love our pack.

There is a Blue and White painted room in heaven with your name on it. I went rescue route 5 years ago with a 9 mo old Brittany Spaniel. Named him Marcus Aurelius. Good luck with the training process.

I am really happy for you ILLINOIS. My wife and I are cat people (Tonkinese right now we've had for 9 years) but I can certainly relate to your love for Bailey and your new excitement over Fonzie. Wishing you (and Fonzie) the best of health and happiness.

A couple in my neighborhood have a Brittany Spaniel.....he's a senior, but is SO friendly and so cute.

Regarding Marcus Aurelius, maybe I'm letting the cat out of the bag (something dog lovers should never do), but when my Mom called me that when I was growing up, I knew my Dad's PSU fraternity paddle was soon going to be meeting my butt!

Nice job Illinois. I have a similar relationship with siameserescue.org.

I was lucky enough to be entrusted with the best kitten ever (8 years ago). Rescue organizations do a great job of quickly getting animals out of shelters and into foster homes. They do an even greater job of fostering and then finding the right homes for the animals.

The people that will always have my respect are the ones that take in older animals, often with medical issues. I couldn't do it, but I'm thankful there are those that do.

Congrats on the new boy and I like the name. Two thumbs up.

Great news and it sounds like a great organization. Glad you are going thru a rescue group.... Too many people buy from breeders and half or more turn out to be puppy mills. Very sad!

I'm getting up in years and have had recused dogs all my adult life. A few months ago I tried something different and spent a ton (maybe 2) on a new Havanese puppy. Most people friendly dog ever.

I have a "junior" attached to my name so when it was first/middle/junior I was in deep doo doo

Your name will appear in the "Book of Lambs" despite any trolling you may have done.

Congrats on your new boy! I have two Bassets, one boy and one girl- best dogs ever!! My boy came from BROOD (Bassett Rescue of Old Dominion). Another wonderful organization if anyone in or around Virginia is considering rescuing one of these awesome dogs.

Put my yellow lab down on mar 18. He had just turned 8.

Had routine surgery and then after the antibiotic supply he started getting sick. Ended up with bone marrow suppression. Took him to several vets while he was deteriorating before my eyes (3 days span) and they said he probably has an infection so they gave him more antibiotics.

Took him to specialist hospital for 24 hour care. Depending on who the vet was, my updates were "he's improving, he's ok" and then in the middle of the night I got a call to come say goodbye.

That sucked. I haven't gotten a new one yet.

So sad. I miss "Little Girl" very much. But, we had her cremated, so she is back at home with us.

I did that too and it really helped to bring closure to what really was a tragic situation. He's in his bag in the corner of the living room (on a stand) where he used to lay. I'll bury him eventually.

Dogs are fantastic. It's taken a while to get used to walkin around by myself as opposed to Duke being right behind me everywhere I went. The life cycle can be a b****.

don't know about bassett hounds but the happy dog in my Avatar is Ozzie. His sister is Cee Cee. to make a long story short, one day when my oldest was going to Temple and living in a sketchy area, he walked outside to go to class. There was a guy on the sidewalk with these two pit bull puppies. My son asked what he was doing with those dogs as something didn't look right.

The guy said he was taking them to his brother who raises them to fight. Ross said no you are not and took them from him. He has done a great job raising them. He is headed overseas for the next year or so which means I get to take care of them while he is gone. Totally psyched, love these dogs. I love every dog we have ever had and we have had some great ones.

Thanks to all that rescue and raise dogs. They see their life through you and the trust you establish with them is immeasurable.

She is in a little box, where she loved to play, and especially eat.

Great news! With a name like Fonzie, rest assured, he'll be a chick-magnet for sure. Just keep him out of the water, else he might want to "jump the shark"

Following this thread Illinois, Gus, my shepherd/Rotweiller mix rescue died in my arms last month @ 14. Outkicked the coverage age wise for his breeds. Jade, his lab/retriever rescue misses him as much or more than I do. Bittersweet times, please keep us posted...
